Who said anything about 'cracking' other people's wifi? Airodump-ng is an audit utility and is similar to kismet, it will tell you all the AP's in the area including the channel that they are on. The best way to determine if it works is simply to try it, I did not bother about working out the chipset. You'll find that most of them work with either kismet or airodump-ng. I finally managed to get it working on my netbook w/ an atheros chipset; but it was fiddly. And I'm -hacking- on the wireless code at the moment. :) (I then just rebooted back into XP mode to run inssider, as all I wanted was RSSIs.) That said, Kismet is great if you want to do detailed wireless debugging. :) It just isn't easy. :) That (all) said, it wouldn't be hard to write a *NIX Inssider clone; it just uses the card-reported RSSI from channel scans. Kismet does a lot more and thus wants monitor/intercept/debugging modes (which is why it's fiddly.) adrian -- - Xenion - http://www.xenion.com.au/ - VPS Hosting - Commercial Squid Support - - $24/pm+GST entry-level VPSes w/ capped bandwidth charges available in WA - -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[SLUG] Auto Reboot ADSL modem ??
Lately I have had my connection drop out late at night, which causes auto-download via JDownloader to fail with no internet connection message. I have JDownloader set to auto-reboot the modem from file hosters such as rapidshare ( for free downloads) and this will work fine normally. However, when I am using a paid-for premium account on a file hoster this does not occur. I am aware that my system can be set to auto-ping my connection on at a predetermined interval which is fine for just ensuring that my connection stays alive, and the modem can be rebooted via a script if the ping fails. However, if the system is working fine and downloading at max speed, the chances are that the ping will fail due to lack of band-width, which would then cause an unnecessary reboot of the modem. Is there a daemon/script/utility ( pref GUI) that can determine whether or not my machine has an active connection by checking my network connection on Gnome NetworkManager or such? I am using Mint 9 (Ubuntu 10.4 based). Thanks -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

Re: [SLUG] live distro for Acer netbook?
The main obstacle is WiFi, but I believe the Acer netbooks have a similar WiFi setup to the Asus eee, in which case Fedora 13 should do the trick. There is also a netbook version of Puppy Linux that I was able to activate WiFi with. Ubuntu 10.4 and Mint would not recognise the wireless card on my Asus eee 1005 despite my following several sets of complicated instructions. Nor would several other distros -- I seem to remember Moblin was one of them. If you use Windows on the netbook to download and install LinuxLive USB Creator, that makes it much easier to create and trial bootable USB sticks or cards -- http://www.linuxliveusb.com. Jon. Also PPP itself (assuming you are using ppp) can check that the other end of the connection is alive - and if not, will exit which would remove the default route.
