Re: [SLUG] Re: slug Digest, Vol 19, Issue 18

2007-08-12 Thread Billy Kwong
H, sounds like a computer of 7-8 years young.

Hardware components back in those days are vulnerable to the "capacitor
plague"[0]. Simply put, inferior electrolytic capacitors may be in use for
motherboards, as well as other cards. You can have a look at the
electrolytic capacitors on the boards to see if they are bulging or leaking.
It might also be a good idea to have a look inside the power supply as well,
since they too are vulnerable to this problem (of course, turn off, unplug
and discharge the PSU before doing this, and open the PSU yourself at your
own risk).

As long as the installed files and DBs are in different locations, and both
postmasters of different versions are listening on different ports, then
yes you can do that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Ubuntu and Debian already supports
having multiple versions running if you use their PostgreSQL packages.

Re: [SLUG] Possible BIOS problem

From my experience it's either two things, memory or your power supply.

For memory, try running memtest (www.memtest.org), which can also be found
on a Ubuntu live CD.

For PSU, well, you've gotta have a spare PSU around.

No, I'd rather not having to download the entire repository if I can help

Have you had a look at apt-mirror? It differs from apt-proxy or
apt-cacher in that you create a mirror of a remote repository all
at once rather than caching packages you download, so it can take
a while to get setup, but then it's simple to keep up to date -
just run it from cron once or twice a day. dapper + edgy + feisty,
main + retricted + universe + multiverse, including updates,
backports and security is 51GB in total.

If you want a quick way to fill your mirror, I have a full mirror
of the three latest Ubuntu distros. Bring a hard drive to either
St Leonards (work, but not this week) or Lindfield (home) and
I'll copy it over for you if you'd like.

Cheers,

John

[SLUG] deb caching software for use on LANs that doesn't suck?

2007-05-08 Thread Billy Kwong

Good morning all,

For quite some time I've tried apt-cacher and settled on apt-proxy for a few
years, for caching deb packages on a LAN to reduce internet bandwidth usage
and to speed up apt-get processes.

Since apt-proxy has moved to using the twisted framework, I've found that
apt-proxy's suckiness ranges from "oh I'm going to take 6 hours to complete
your apt-get dist-upgrade because I'm busy doing something in the
background" to "I don't know what to do so I'll throw you a random HTTP
error", which annoys me to no end.

apt-cacher is no better, as it munges each debs it downloads with some HTTP
headers.

So, has anyone come across something like apt-proxy or apt-cacher, but it
doesn't suck? (Yes I know it sounds like a big ask) :)

Bill

Re: [SLUG] 64 bit Ubuntu

2006-10-29 Thread Billy Kwong

Not quite. the amd64 architecture does have 32-bit code compatibility. Libc
however is the problem. i.e. 32-bit dynamic binaries would require a 32-bit
libc, amongst other 32-bit libraries that it linked to.

The best way to run 32-bit binaries on a 64-bit Linux installation is via a
32-bit chroot. i.e. a "virtual" installation of a 32-bit Linux installation
inside your 64-bit instruction. There are plenty of instructions on how to
do that out there on the internet, and I suggest you google for "32-bit
chroot in Linux".

if
you simply replace the kernel and then reboot your system. Fortunately,
due

exception of CPU specific programs (emulators, etc) and proprietary

So basically to answer your question, no. If you want to move to a 64bit

No. It's essentially the greylisting from SLUG's mail server in effect. Your
Postfix should hold your mail in the queue and retry the delivery after a
specified time, as per the RFCs. Once the delivery is successful (yes, the
SLUG mail server would accept your delivery after a specified time also),
then your mail server IP (I think) should be cached in a whitelist, thus you
shouldn't get that sort of delay again.

Not sure if the SLUG mail servers supports SPF. SLUG mail server admins?

Greylisting (was: Re: [SLUG] mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] slow)

That depends on the implementation of the MTA or greylisting. The point of
greylisting is to slow down the spammers as to how quickly (which is what
they rely on) they could spew out spam.

Most MTAs nowadays has disabled the VRFY command to prevent the leakages of
email accounts or (even worse) actual accounts.

Hi Sonia,

Notice that it's a 4xx return code, meaning its a transient error.

My take is that the SLUG mail servers have greylisting enabled. Any new SMTP
sessions would be placed on hold for a specified amount of time (normally 20
minutes?)

The whole purpose of the exercise is to slow spammers down.

With Debian, it depends on the packages you have installed. Often times
there will be old packages that would prevent a smmooth dist-upgrade, but
they can be resolved quite easily (remove the old offending package first).
Normally apt or dpkg would tell you how to resolve such problem if it
exists.

At the end of an upgrade, yes, Debian/Ubuntu is very usable, unlike some
other distros.
