RE: [SLUG] Konqueror spits out 'malformed UR'L when accessing /home

2009-10-21 Thread Brett Olsen
Hi Elliot,

So to confirm you want Konqueror to show your home directory on start ?

Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> When Konqueror Starts : Show My Home Page

Set your home page to ~

Tested as working on Kubuntu 9.x Konqueror version 4.2.2, no errors on start.

Let me know if it helps :) There are perhaps some nicer and more convient ways
to do what you want too, if you give us some background info.

Patrick,
Not being a KDE or Konqueror user, I don't experience this (and Chromium,
Firefox and Nautilus don't seem to have problems with the "file" protocol)

But there seem to be a number of open bug reports that are related to your
issue:-

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=192632 - Protocol not supported file

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202288 - Konqueror has crashed browsing
filesystem,

It might be worth submitting a new report if you can't find your a problem
close to yours.

What are you trying to do, it already runs a BSD based deriviant, I have
SSH, Samaba a console and everything else I need, I can install apache

What are you interested in doing ? chances are it does it.

I can see if it had 3.5g a decent camera, real gps and ran Linux I would
go
for it... But there are linux Phones coming out that are more open, or
run
Linux by default these are the better options.

RE: [SLUG] Division by zero error

2003-10-13 Thread Brett Olsen
Hi Lyle,
Sounds like a specialist application indeed :-)

Hmm, 20030911 is pretty up to date, you could spend days trying out the DLL
overrides and other options in the wine config file and merging in DLL's
from an existing Win98 box or if you are game compile the latest version of
Wine from CVS (if available).

If you have some time to sort out the DLL's, refer to the DOCO and try this
option --debugmsg +loaddll, see
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wine-user/config-drive-main for more info,
expect to spend at least a couple of hours doing this, it might not work
100%.

What about another option like VMWARE ?, the requirements are quite hefty
compared to Wine though.

Also I noticed that Transgaming's WineX (www.transgaming.com) runs some
applications that Wine does not and vice versa.

Um, that's about all I can think of for now, if we had access to the app we
could help you with the DLL stuff, but if you got Redhat+Wine installed you
can probably work through this yourself.

Best of luck :-)

Thank You
Brett Olsen

Cheers for replying, the version is wine-20030911-1rh9winehq.i686.rpm
and is obviously runnning on RH9.

The app is proprietry and is used to control colour settings on a
Printing Press. The software connects to a central server over
tcp/ethernet for colour values and also controls ink ducts on our press
via a serial port and parallel port connected to specialised control
equipment. It has a basic GUI setup with controls to change ink
settings, press configuration etc.

The software was written to my knowledge in Visual Basic and at the
moment is running on a Win98 platform, we want to try and move to Linux
as we have had reliability and virus issues with 98. Unfortunately I
cannot supply a copy of the software.

Thanks for the swift reply, I appreciate it.

Sorry about that :-)

Transgaming can be found at www.transgaming.com, some screenshots can be
found in the games database :

A bit of NFO, WineX is a project that was originally based on Wine, which
focuses on DirectX and other gaming technologies.

I use WineX, to ease my Windoze gaming fix, typically I can install the game
from WineX, get a Desktop Icon and click the shortcut, just like any windows
game, but with no windows at all !

Guess I just assumed you had all been using it since version 1 :-)

I have been doing some searching on the NET and I cannot find any good/up to date data protection programs, I am running Mandrake 9.0 using EXT 3, here is what I would like to do :

* Wipe the swap file
* Wipe free space

I think I have found all the places that KDE likes to store data, it near puts files damm everywhere :-)

I am using shred for file deletions, this appears to be fine, does anyone know if the EXT3 journal stores info as well ?

I would also be interested in any experience or expertise that users may have in this area.

RE: [SLUG] Repair shop?

2002-10-15 Thread Brett Olsen

Hmm,
I can't really remember the proper explanation (sorry), I think that you
will find that this is based on a half truth.
In your example, if you used two devices of the same connection type, but
different speed there should be no slowdown.
SCSI typically uses a 32bit processor which can submit commands and
disconnect from the devices and uses other things such as tag queuing to
limit any possible performance hit.
You will have this problem, however if use a LVD & SE device on the same
channel, but this is a different scenario.

I have just got myself a new Tekram SCSI controller and it certainly
mentions to avoid having a slow UltaFast device on the same channel as newer
160MB/sexs channel. It provides two channels on the same controller so you
can separate them otherwise its says it will drop its speed to match the
slowest.

[SLUG] New WineX 2.2 release available

2002-10-14 Thread Brett Olsen
Title: New WineX 2.2 release available

Hi Guys,
I noticed that a new interim release of WineX is available, details are as follows:

    ---
 WineX 2.2
    ---
    Release Notes, October 7, 2002.

TransGaming is pleased to announce the release of WineX 2.2. TransGamers
can now download RPM, Debian and TGZ packages from the downloads section of
http://www.transgaming.com/

WineX 2.2 is primarily a maintenance release, focusing on sound and
multimedia improvements that have been made in the last several weeks.
In addition, WineX 2.2 now includes preliminary support for Sony Online
Entertainment's popular massive multiplayer game, EverQuest.

In addition to features provided by WineX 2.2, TransGamers using it or
any previous version of WineX should how be able to play Valve Software's
popular Half-Life and CounterStrike games on-line.  Previously, anti-cheat
software would reject users running with WineX.

New Features

    * Many improvements have been made to the sound system in WineX. Several
new combinations of hardware and device drivers should now work
  better than previously.
    * Hardware sound buffering is supported when explicitly activated. It
can be configured in the ~/.transgaming/config file, along with
support for Full Duplex mode.  See the WineX Beginners Guide v 2.2 for
  additional information.
    * DirectShow support has been significantly improved, both in performance,
as well as with support for additional media types.  DirectShow performance

work around the problem, disable the SuperMount feature in the OS.

Known Issues

RedHat 7.2, 7.3, 8.0

Default Kernels shipped by RedHat in versions 7.2, 7.3, and 8.0 include
patches that can cause significant performance degredations in WineX.  Both
EverQuest and StarCraft are affected by these issues.  For best results,
install a stock Linux kernel from Kernel.org.  TransGaming is paying close
attention to this issue and we hope to have it resolved in the next WineX
release.

Gnome 2.0
=

Gnome 2.0 users may experience problems with Gnome panels overlapping WineX
windows.  TransGaming expects these problems to be solved in future releases
of WineX.  In the meantime, we advise users to disable Gnome top-bar panels
during play.

WarCraft 3
==

There are some known issues running WarCraft 3 in Direct3D mode under WineX.
Users may experience incorrect cursors, poor font display and minor rendering
artifacts. It is highly recommended that WarCraft 3 be played in OpenGL mode.
This can be done with the -opengl command line option. This option is automatically
added to the desktop and menu shortcuts so there is no need for it to be changed.
Note that after upgrading to the latest patch to support Battle.net play, the
game will be restated in Direct3D mode.  Simply restart the game from the
desktop icon shortcut to use OpenGL mode.

Civilization 3
==

Currently copy protection for Civilization 3 will only work with the 1.0 and
1.07 versions of the game. If the game is updated to a later version, it will
no longer pass copy protection even with the disc properly mounted. It is
recommended that users not update their copy of Civilization 3 to version
1.21 until copy protection support in WineX is updated. Users may also
experience minor problems with area of influence lines around settler units and
diplomatic indicators found on the Foreign Advisor screen.

Grand Theft Auto 3
==

The opening videos for Grand Theft Auto 3 work quite slowly under WineX.
The movies may be skipped by pressing the space bar twice.

At this time the mouse wheel is not working in Black and White. Users can
zoom by holding both the left and right mouse button at the same time and
moving the mouse towards or away as needed. Zooming can also be accomplished

[SLUG] Linux, New Hardware & Me

2002-10-08 Thread Brett Olsen

Hi Guys,
I have Linux running great again at home, I thought I would post the steps
that I went through to get it working, I know you all probably know this,
but anyway

Hardware : Intel P4 2.5gig, Intel 845G Chipset, 512MB DDR 333Mhz, Leadtek
Ti4200 128MB DDR

Problems : Linux would not boot, X would not recognise my video card, My
Chipset was not fully supported and thus DMA was not enabled.

Solutions :
Installing Linux - Firstly as you all know, I could not boot Linux at all, I
found through other groups that adding mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=510M@1M
(where 510M=total memory -1) fixed the issue.
To get the installer of your favourite distro working I appended this line
to the Linux start-up command, so it would be : Linux mem=exactmap
mem=640K@0 mem=510M@1M.
If you X configuration fails, don't worry, just set it to the correct
settings and set the boot mode to text, this will make it easier when
loading the driver latter.
Once you have installed, you need to modify your boot settings to include
the above parameters, I used grub because I could not get LILO to accept
mem=exactmap (complained about requiring a numerical value).
When booting press e to edit your boot options, append the above line, once
booted remember to modify your appropriate grub config file, its menu.lst in
Mandrake.
* Note to mandrake(& Redhat?) users, I could not get lilo working, so be
careful using the rescue mode off the install CD as it will re-install lilo
and not grub if you replace the boot loader, any ideas on getting lilo to
work anyone ?

X Configuration - X was unable to use the nv driver for my card, this was
easy as I was going to replace the driver with NVIDIA's anyway.
Go to www.nvidia.com, download 1x Kernel and 1x GLX driver, they must be
matching, I recommend getting the source from the page.
Make install both the kernel and the GLX driver, the module should load and
complain about tainting your GPL license, this is good as it means that the
kernel module is ready to go.
Modify you XF86config-4 file and replace the driver line nv with nvidia,
save and you should be able to now start X.

Cool, Now I had Linux installed and video, but it really performed sluggish
(no pun intended).

DMA, Chipset Support - The version of the kernel I was using is
2.4.19-16mdk, this version was unable to detect my IDE chipset correctly,
this means no DMA, not a good thing with a modern machine.
To test for DMA support I downloaded hdparm from
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/hardware/ you can check to see the
status of your drive by running hdparm /dev/hda (substitute this for your
HDD), to test the drive run hdparm -tT /dev/hda, it only was getting
3.2mb/sec before changing my kernel :-(
After some trawling of the newsgroups I found a post by Alan Cox, suggesting
to use 2.4.19-ac4, I don't know if this is the best version to use (any
feedback?)
Now the 2.4.19-ac4 patch was against the official release of 2.4.19, so I
download the release version of the Kernel from www.kernel.org and then Alan
Cox's patch from the same site.
Then, since it has been awhile since I last recompiled my Kernel, I read the
instructions at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html :-), this
document covers everything you need to know, read it carefully.
The kernel patch was applied using patch -p1 (something like this, zcat
patchfile.gz | patch -p1 or patch -p1 < patch if it is uncompressed), Alan
uses kernel.vanilla as his base directory so remember the -p1 option.
Since I was recompiling I took the opportunity to choose the correct
processor type and make some other minor changes.

Now with the new kernel installed, as per the instructions at www.tldp.org,
hdparm was returning a result around 10x higher (I can't remember the exact
figure), and the system finally started to feel like a 2.5 gig P4 Linux
Beast :-)

Things left to do : find some nice LM monitoring software, tweak my video
card (I think its registry.c ?), load my windows games using wineX, work out
how to make grub look pretty (graphical) and install my LCD I ordered from
CrystalFontz

Thanks
Brett

RE: [SLUG] Redhat 7.3, 8.0 & P4 2.5 gig, any ideas ? - Solution

2002-10-07 Thread Brett Olsen

Hi Guys,
I thought I would post back the solution to the problem I was having with
Linux on new hardware.

Problem : Kernel would hang at the point where it says "Uncompressing
Linux..."

Solution: Add the following parameters to the bootloader :
mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=510M@1M (where 510=amount of mem-1M)

Hardware: P4 2.5gig, 845G chipset, 512M DDR Ram, Geforce 4 Ti4200
128MB

Tested On : Redhat 8.0, Mandrake 9.0 both now working fine.

Cause : Probably the chipset, the 845G is quite new, could also be
affected by 333Mhz DDR ??

Thanks for you suggestions and help

Brett

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the suggestions, Erik van Pienbroek got back to me with this

Hi,

Sounds just like my problem.
I've just got an new P4 2,4Ghz box and when I tried to boot Linux (various
Distro's tried) the kernel would hang at the point where it says
"Uncompressing linux...". After monitoring the Linux Kernel mailing lists,
I've found out the problem could be solved by passing the following
parameters to the bootloader : mem=exactmap mem=640K@0 mem=510M@1M Since
then I haven't had any troubles running linux on my new box.

Hope this works for you too.

I will post back again if this works, if so, perhaps someone else won't have
to spend days trying to get linux going again

quick note here the Epox 4g4a+ mobo is a great update board for an older ATX
box and PSU.

I talked recently with a friend who has one of these and he updated to the
2.4.19 after some stability problems with the 2.4.18 RH default kernel then
noted "this machine rips" , so much the thing is running a bit hot and he
had to upgrade the HSF; Ive noticed this too when doing allot of compiling
on a P4 the stock HSF doesn't cut it and the cpu runs a bit on the toasty
side.

Thank Matthew,
That's a thought, I did not think of the Vid Card, I have tons of AGP cards
lying around, I will try another one tonight :-) (as well as my boot

I think this is your problem. The latest Redhat's
do not like the fancier Nvidia chips for some reason.

My brother has a epox board (but AMD chip) with an
Nvidia card and had similar problems.

Sorry, no solution for you at the moment :-)

Have you tried a web search?

Regards,
Matt

2002-10-02 Thread Brett Olsen

Hi Ben

Yep, I have the Bootdisk I made during install, I will give it a go, the
problem is that the system does not appear to be able to load the Kernel, as
the bootdisk is Linux based, I doubt it will work.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will give it a go tonight.

insert the boot disk you made when you installed redhat. You did make a boot
disk didnt you.

there is a rescue mode on the cdrom check that out. Ive got lots of p4s and
no problems so far

[SLUG] Redhat 7.3, 8.0 & P4 2.5 gig, any ideas ?

2002-10-02 Thread Brett Olsen
Title: Message

Hi Guys,
I have just upgraded to a P4
2.5 and I do not seem to be able to install/run Linux anymore
:-(
During a fresh install the
system hangs when trying to uncompress the Kernel (no error
messages) and I cannot even boot off my existing 7.3 installation, the
system simply reboots straight after GRUB

For test purposes, I booted
Windows, loaded all the drivers and started stress testing the system, the
hardware seems to be fine, I ran it for many hours looping in various
benchmarks/games, etc.

I tried numerous BIOS settings,
adjusting the memory timings and speeds down, etc, fail safe defaults, BIOS
upgrade, I also did a Linux medicheck on the new Redhat 8.0 CD's to no
avail.

Any Ideas ?

My System
Epox 4g4a
Intel P4
2.5
2 x 256MB
DDR
Leadtek 128MB
Ti4200

I remember reading somewhere
about problems with P4's and something about a CPU database, but I don't really
think this is related ?

I can't wait to get Linux
running on this beast...

Thank Guys
Brett
