[SLUG] Re: High res tiffs in a LaTeX document

D'oh insert forehead slapping sound

I did not know you could do loss-less conversion to eps. ImageMagick does the trick
(for anyone interested)

covert pretty_pic.tif pretty_pic.eps
(Then wait - it takes a while on my old P233)

[SLUG] High res tiffs in a LaTeX document

2001-10-20 Thread Stephen Graham

Howdy.

Has anyone had experience with putting high resolution graphics (tiff files) into a
latex document? I am having no joy at the moment. I need to keep the images (pretty
rendered ones) at as high a res as possible...

TIA

[SLUG] XFree86 badness

Hey,

Two days ago I apt-got the latest (woody) version of XFree86:

I can now no longer run X. When I try to kick off xdm or startx I get the following

 should reconfigure.

[SLUG] How does Firewire stack up?

2000-12-01 Thread Stephen Graham

Hey

I will heed to be getting a bunch of new external devices over the next
couple of months, and was wondering how firewire stacks up against
SCSI. I would rather not invest in something which is to be obscelete
in 6 months (former Amstrad owner here...).

Firewire compares quite favourable with SCSI devices in terms of price.
(Am I wrong on this? Is there a reason for this?) How well is it
supported by Debian / Linux? How well does it perform, especially when
you start a bit of chaining?

Anyone's experience or a pointer to a good review would be much
appreciated.

Stephen

PS - To any multia owners out there. The onboard SCSI device on a
multia is SCSI-II, is it not? Also, does anyone know where you can pick
up internal/external SCSI adapters, as neither Jaycar (Gore Hill) or
Harris have them...

You have tried
make modules_install
have you not?

You have also make sure to keep modules support in the kernel?

(Dumb questions I know, but I have screwed up on them before)

[SLUG] Quick bash/ps question

2000-11-18 Thread Stephen Graham

Hey

I am in the middle of writing a tiny bash script (so that I can use
mpage to make my HP DeskJet500C print double sided and two per page).

I was just wondering if anyone knew how to divine the number of pages
contained in a postscript file (a script-friendly way, ie without
looking at the file in ghostview). I need that for padding with blank
pages (to get the write number of pages for the double sided thing).

Thanks

[SLUG] Printing woes

2000-11-06 Thread Stephen Graham

Hey all.

I have a printing bug that I think will be dead obvious to someone else,
I just can not see what it is.

I am trying to print to a HP DeskJet 500C attached to a WinNT box (which
is SMBed). When I print, all I get is:

GSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGSGS

on the one line, and then an almighty number of blank pages.

I am using apsfilter as my filter, and the print command I am using to
test is:

a2ps /etc/fstab

Below is an example entry in printcap:

lp|lp2|cdj500-a4-auto-mono|cdj500 auto mono:\
:lp=/dev/deskjet:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/cdj500-a4-auto-mono:\
:lf=/var/spool/lpd/cdj500-a4-auto-mono/log:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/cdj500-a4-auto-mono/acct:\
:if=/usr/local/bin/netprint_lp2:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:

/usr/local/bin/netprint_lp2 is just a tiny shell script:

#!/bin/bash
/var/lib/apsfilter/filter/aps-cdj500-a4-auto-mono - $@ | \
/usr/bin/smbprint $@

(NB: I modified smbprint to get rid of the CR/LF conversion, which is
why the GS prints all on 1 line I guess...)

Any help would be most appreciated : )

[SLUG] Printing (Debian/Samba)

2000-11-04 Thread Stephen Graham

Hey SLUGers,

I have a HP DeskJet 500C attached to a WinNT machine, and I am trying to
set up printing from my Debian (stable) box.

I have gotten a fair way down the track... I can print text files to
the printer (ie 'cat /etc/fstab | lpr'). The only problem with doing
this is that the file prints out but no page feed is delivered to the
printer (ie the page stays in the printer at the last line).

I have gs and magicfilter on my machine, but no idea for how to
configure them (I know that my gs devide name is djet500c). My print
spooler is LPRng. I am happy to change the magic filter if required.

My /etc/printcap file is as follows

deskjet:\
:cm=HP DeskJet 500C:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/deskjet:\
:af=/var/spool/lpd/deskjet/acct:\
:if=/usr/bin/smbprint:\
:mx=0:\
:lp=/dev/deskjet:

My /var/spool/lpd/deskjet/.config file is as follows

server=charline
service=DeskJet
password=appropriate_password

I have also created a dummy /dev/deskjet device (with permissions 622),
as somewhere advised this for device locking...

I would like to be able to print PS files to the printer, and to have
the page feed when I print text files. Colour would be nice, but is not
essential (I usually print B+W anyway). Any help (pointers to where this
has been answered before?) would be appreciated.

Thanks

Stephen

[SLUG] Visual Age for Java on Linux [Slightly OT]

2000-10-24 Thread Stephen Graham

Hey,

I am running VAJ on linux, and am having problems exporting progams (ie
I have developed an app in VAJ, but am having problems assembling a
release of the code that will compile on other machines w/ javac (JDK)
or the IBM java VM)

I was wondering if any SLUGers had experience with this. I have hunted
around the web but come up with precious little.

Thanks in advance

Stephen

Re: [SLUG] Win Networking

2000-09-16 Thread Stephen Graham

is it actually possible for a Windows
machine to use more then one network adaptor... ie. with a modem and NIC

Yeah, this should not be a problem.
It is much easier with NT, but Win platforms allow it.

Make sure that your DNS resolution is set up so that it uses a remote name
server, and you may have to refer to machines by IP address unless you are
using their WINS host name (which is assuming that all the other machines
networked to afforementioned Win machine are running Samba : )

Re: [SLUG] Hi (fwd)

That is the message I always used to get when I was doing an X connection

Have they tried the Xauth file to see if it exists and is correct. Is the
X-Server a local or remote one? Can root get X? (Has Xconfigurator been run
at any point?)

[SLUG] Forwarding FTP connections to an internal server (continued)

2000-09-05 Thread Stephen Graham

Hey

I just thought I would report the (quite unfortunate) results of my attempts
so far (on Debian GNU/Linux 2.2, the firewall machine is also ip
masquerading (successfully) some internal hosts for web, outbound FTP
etc)...

I tried simply forwarding port 21 to the internal FTP server, but this does
not work since the outbound packets get lost.

This is the same as what happens when I try to use an FTP redirection client
or any port forwarding (or autofw) strategies I have thusfar encountered.

Unfortunately, Fred Vile's patch (to allow inbound FTP) is only for the 2.0
kernel. I found a similar patch for the 2.2 kernel, but it apparently does
not work as it also seems to loose the outbound data packets (specifically,
the client can send the 200 (PORT) command fine, but then it hangs, and when
I send ^C to the client it just says (421, connection closed by host)).

The IP Masq HOWTO (which is great for most things) simply says that it can
not be done, but that the new NetFilter may take care of this.

Does anyone have experience with NetFilter? (Esp retro-fitting it onto a 2.2
firewall)

Also, it was suggested by a friend that I use squid to proxy the FTP
connections. Does anyone have experience with this option (or even know if
it is possible!)

Thanks

Stephen
