What do I apropos or man for the clue? I have problem in the printing area as well. One thing I noticed about printing in the Linux community, is that not too much importance is given to it, to make it simple. The reason M$ is liked by normal users is that they can easily print any document on their system. I know I did not answer your question, but this should be a concern for Linux promoters. If they want to gain serious ground on M$ then printing from Linux (distro independent) should be made transparent or obviously simple. Re: [SLUG] Linux Geeks Printing
I second Laurie's point. I guess most of the folks who jump on to the Linux bandwagon are only going with the hype in the media. It is not enough to create a server class operating system. Especially, when it come to dealing with documents. Even OS/2 (does it exist) made printing simple. End users (who are not techies) that I have talked to are begining to ask questions about Linux. My only selling point is that it is a server class OS. These are the people who would print tons of documents. Most of the computer users print documents and are not techies. Unless Linux makes it easy to print documents, it will not make much headway onto desktop environment. -- Subba Rao [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://members.home.net/subba9/ GPG public key ID 27FC9217 -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug

[SLUG] Large HD and VMWare's raw partitions
One of my Linux system has a slave disk which is 20GB. (0)root@myhost:/~# fdisk /dev/hdc The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 2646. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Command (m for help) (0)root@myhost:~/ The disk partitions at the begining of the disk are Linux ext2 filesystems. Four partitions at the end of the disk are FAT16/msdos. The DOS partitions have been defined in /etc/fstab but at bootup time, these file systems are not getting mounted. I cannot even mount them manually. When I tried to mount them, mount -t auto /dev/hdc5 /msdos then the filesystem is mounted as a ext2 filesystems. When I try to mount them as msdos filesystems, mount -t msdos /dev/hdc5 /msdos then the following message appears: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc5, or too many mounted file systems The goal is to create a raw partition for VMWare on the /dev/hdc5 partition and install NT over it rely on M$ systems. How can I create raw partitions for VMware on large HDs and mount them? Thank you in advance. [SLUG] VMWare and LILO configuration
Hello I have installed VMWare on my Linux (host). There are 2 seprate HDs on this system. I have created raw disks to install the guest OSs. Win98 is installed as a guest OS on one raw disk (/dev/hda5). The problem now is with LILO. I have installed LILO on my /dev/hda MBR. Each time I power on the VMWare, it goes to the LILO prompt. So I modified the lilo.conf to provide Win98 as an option. At the VMWare LILO prompt I select Win98 and then Win98 starts fine. In the current LILO configuration, I have: boot=/dev/hda Can anyone recommend a better LILO and/or VMWare configuration? I prefer that VMWare not to prompt me for the guest OS. I plan to install other Guest OSs on other HD (/dev/hdb). How will the "boot" directive in lilo.conf, direct to the other guest OSs on /dev/hdb1 or /dev/hdb2 etc? Thank you in advance. Then, install GAG to your MBR for normal OS switching - it's tiny, graphical, and perky. It's also Free Software. You can find GAG on Freshmeat. Thank you for replying. I want the system to boot up with the default system being Linux. [SLUG] Apache/Proxy not caching Linux client
I am using Apache 1.3.14 on Linux. The proxy module has been configured for caching. When I access from Windows boxes, the proxy module seems to be caching the permitted sites. When I revist the sites, the pages are served from the cache. When I try to go to the same sites from the Linux system (which is hosting the Apache server), the server connects to the actually site. In the browser I do have proxy pointing to port 80 on "hostname". I have changed it to fully qualified hostname and that does not stop the server from reloading the page. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? How can I make Apache proxy to serve the Linux clients from the proxy cache? [SLUG] Samba - veto files directive
Hi, I have used the "veto files" flags for my users home directory shares. The syntax is as follows, veto files = /.*/ This is to hide all the dot files in the samba client. I stoped and restarted samba and sure enough the dot files do not get listed. One problem that has showed up is, when I try to save a file from the samba client (windows system) to the samba server, I get the "Error Copying File" message box, "Cannot copy xyz:A file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different filename" This happens to any file that I am trying to move to the samba server. I have already tried "hide dot files" directive and that does not hide the files.
