[SLUG] In need of servers

2003-02-13 Thread evilbunny
Hello slug,

Slightly not about linux, but I'm currently trying to source
reasonably priced 1RU servers in Sydney (which will run debian)
however I don't seem to be able to get any anymore for less then
  about $2.5k to $3k...

They will be primarily used for web and email serving, and only
needs to be a bare minimum P3 or equiv, in a 1 RU case with 1/2 gig
of ram and 2 x 20+ IDE drives... looking to pay about ~$2k...

If anyone knows of any can you please let me know, this isn't a 1
off and we will be looking to purchase at least 1 every 1 to 2
months... Initially looking to purchase 2, most likely 3 of them...

Hello Adam,

Depending what you wish to do, you could always use the hostap drivers
and put the card into AP mode... iirc the wlan-ng drivers use a set of
non-standard API's and HostAP drivers can put prism2/2.5/3 devices
into client and ad hoc modes as well as AP mode...

[SLUG] Talk from US Wireless Enthusiast

2002-09-06 Thread evilbunny

Hello All,

Well in November, there will be a fellow community wireless guy over
here from the US, visiting friends and rellies, he's an ex kiwi :)
in any case I've asked him to give a talk about what they are doing
in the US, if memory serves he also recent gave a wireless talk at
defcon. He's involved with personaltelco.net which is one of the
  more active in the US.

At this stage he's okay'd to give a talk on the 9th of November, so
those of you that are curious about the bigger world of wireless
this will give you a chance to find out what else is happening in
the world and ask him a few questions...

At this stage kick off about 1pm ish, location to be announced...

The day may possibly be used as another cantenna building day for
those that missed out on the first one...

I'm sure there will be other things etc... but I thought it would be
an opportunity that may not come along all that often, and should be
  interesting...

The reason for the post?

There is now an international Node Database available @ www.nodedb.com

What's a node database?it's a databaseof nodes.nodes being points
on the network. So add yourself, and see who else pops up around you then
talk to them about connecting if you so desire.

To find which community group you can join, www.nodedb.com/links.php has a

Hello Martin,

Routers can check the source, and they can filter based on a simple
set of rules that only allows IP's that should go through the fact
that they allow different source addresses cause many headaches for
admin... flip side being unidirectional satellite setups need to
send an alternate source address to have the traffic come back via the
satellite link...

If you needed a linux ISO, and your friend or a server on the network

DF> you if the primary goes down but not if your site is cut off from the
DF> net. You could then have a tertiary mx that is off site of course.
DF> Or you could not have any.

It is my understanding that a secondary MX will still reject the mail
5 days after just like any other mailserver on the net would if you
don't have a server up and running that can collect the mail or
redirect it to another server in that time, the only benefit for
secondary MX's is if there is a dialup and the ISP has dynamic IP's
etc and while everything updated etc...

or having it on the same site, because then you shouldn't get hit with
a surge of mail coming in once all the servers realise your server is
back up, and like wise they won't try to hit a dead IP, they'll shift
it along to the next preferanced server...

there is a downside... the secondary can be used to spam you, as it
can't check if they are a valid account until it's shunted to the
primary or a server that deals with it...

feel free to correct me if i'm wrong...

Hello Chris,

aussiepcshop.com.au are the last place I'd buy from, I've had dealings
with this company and persons running it in the past and well, you
often get what you pay for is all I can say.

Re[2]: [SLUG] Sydney Wireless Mailing List up

2002-01-16 Thread evilbunny

Hello Terry,

No there are actually a couple of hobby point to point links, and at
least 1 of these has listed themselves in the node database of
interested persons already, and my interest and talking to others has
already sparked interest in possibly a few more until something bigger
can link them in, currently there's plans to reach the city, ryde,
seven hills, possibly further, and at least point an access point up at
Campbelltown, and some surrounding areas, unsure when this will be
linked into the rest though, I'll post news items as they come up to
the website.

Re: [SLUG] Sydney Wireless Mailing List up

2002-01-16 Thread evilbunny

Before I ever set about setting up a new domain/project I searched
mailing lists, the web other wireless project sites (the only project
listed in Sydney was the Nepean one, which no one seems to know
anything about) and the sydney.air.net.au group (which I might add
never replied to emails sent to them) I also assumed they were dead,
and in any case didn't cover the area myself or my friends are in, and
as to date I've gotten 2 APs which will be going up shortly, I shall
ask the question to this list, are there any active projects happening
in Sydney, with equipment and active links, APs etc etc etc I should
be talking to, because all I've found so far is a few friends with
point to point links and nothing in the way of a plan for expansion,
or even the motivation to get to it and organise people into a what
could be a very good thing for Sydney, both to those without access to
cable and those with it. So far to date I have the 2 APs I purchased
last week, plus another 2 I can get for installing a point to point
link for a business associate plus another business meeting on Friday
with another business associate that could possibly inject sponsorship
into the project. There is another project, secret.net.au however I
too believe this is mostly a dead project, please correct me if I'm
wrong.

Yep. Not much I can do about that.

http://www.sydney.air.net.au has been up for some months before
www.sydneywireless.com, which has only been up for a few weeks. So who is
reinventing the wheel?
