[SLUG] So slow...

2010-11-24 Thread mark adrian bell
I just tried out Internet Explorer on my new Windows 7 netbook and it's slower
than trying to make molasses flow up-hill, in the Siberian capital of
Novosibirsk, on January first, in the middle of the deepest, darkest, snow
storm of the winter. I just can't wait to wipe Windows off this thing and
install Linux instead.

[SLUG] beginners home networking question

2010-08-26 Thread mark adrian bell
Hello everyone,

I'm having a problem with the wired Ethernet connection that I've set up
between my laptop and my desktop. I like to ssh into my desktop from my old
laptop when I need resource heavy program like OpenOffice.org. The problem is,
that if I stop working for a few minutes, the ethernet connection times out. It
seems that the only way I can get my connection back is to unplug and replug
the cross-over cable. Here are some details, I hope you can point me in the
right direction. I'm using Ubuntu Lucid.

My desktop

Hostname: Antec
NetworkManager: removed
Firewall: Firestarter. Allows ssh connections from my laptop.
Dhcp server (Because that's the only way I could get NetworkManager on my
laptop to accept a connection from it)
I've changed these two lines in /etc/dhpc3/dhpcd.conf:

My laptop

Hostname: Thinkpad
NetworkManager: Yes
Firewall: Firestarter. Internet connection sharing enabled.
Internet connection: Mobile broadband

Here is output from /var/log/syslog on my desktop:

[SLUG] Ben NanoNote

2010-03-27 Thread mark adrian bell
Hello Everyone,

I'm writing to tell you about the Ben NanoNote open-source hackable hand held
computer.

http://sharism.cc/specs/

I've had one for a week now and even though I haven't been able to get it to do
much yet, it's great fun! It runs the OpenWrt version of embedded Linux, it
uses Busybox for it's basic console utilities, it comes with Vi, Ash, Lua, and
packages for Guile have been ported. I think it has packages for Qt and Gtk as
well, but I have no what to do with those.

It's dead easy to connect to your computer via ethernet over usb, and even
__I__ managed to reflash it to a new version of it's software. It's under heavy
development, with lot's of enthusiastic discussion. Here's the Wiki:

http://en.qi-hardware.com/wiki/Ben_NanoNote

I got mine from Sharism.cc in Hong Kong for about a hundred dollars, and they
FedEx-ed it to me right away. Like I said, it's under heavy development and I
haven't been able to actually do much with it except get it to show date, time
and a calendar, but I bet you techy SLUG people who know how to cross-compile
programs will be able to port lots of useful stuff to it.

Hi Daniel,

You guessed right, the real problem is that I need a closed source driver from
Epson to make my scanner work, with Vuescan or without. Aside from that, I find
Vuescan better for scanning negatives than Xsane, so I prefer it even though
it's closed source.

I'm going to get a new desktop at work and was wondering
 whether it's
 worth moving to 64-bit.

I confess that I still dual boot 32-bit for one legacy application: Vuescan.
But with enough tinkering with ia32-lib or VirtualBox, I bet I could get it to
work. It used to work on 64-bit Intrepid. Other than that, I've been running a
64-bit desktop happily for years.

A friend who had one of the above,
but thought it unsuitable, gave it to me. I
find it very suitable for certain things and want to
 continue using it. However,
it came with Windows XP and I'd prefer to run Linux on it.
 At the same time, I
don't want to wipe XP and then find the computer doesn't
 work properly with
Linux. I solved that problem on a laptop I use by using
 Wubi to install Ubuntu. I
looked for a way to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the Eee
 by using Wubi, but
there doesn't seem to be one.

Are people running versions of Linux on this or similar
 computers that they've
been able to install easily while keeping Windows?

 Thank for reading this,

 Leslie.

Re: [SLUG] A problem with Evince

2009-04-14 Thread mark adrian bell

It could be that Evince doesn't like your PostScript file for some reason. You
could try opening it with another PS viewer, like GV or GSview. Or you could
try converting your file to .pdf and see if Evince will open that. Use the
ps2pdf command line program to convert your file.

Can anyone tell me why the command

evince filename.ps

simply gets the cursor to go to the next line and stay still?

I've tried re-installing it, to no avail.

Any help ...

Re: [SLUG] Defining Mainsteam

2009-04-03 Thread mark adrian bell

I've been running Linux as a hobbyist for more than five years now. I don't
have a technical background. I've always used Debian because I like Apt-get,
and because I like the non-commercial philosophy. I really enjoy learning about
new software and how Linux works. It's a great hobby.

The reason that I run Ubuntu (actually Xubuntu) now is that it has a quick
release cycle and it sets everything up for me. I can still modify the system
to work just how I like it, but with Ubuntu I solve problems when I want to,
usually not because I have to because something doesn't work. And when I do hit
a problem, documentation is really easy to find on the net.

-Inline Attachment Follows-

Regarding Martin Visser's comments in the final Sound Problem posting.  I
don't want to incite a Holdens versus Faclcons type debate here, but how
would one briefly characterize mainstream Linux these days?

I've been using generic Unix systems (including Bell Unix, Whitesmith's Idris,
AIX, Solaris and Linux) since the mid-1980s.  Slackware Linux is rather in
the old, tool-box type mould, I guess, and although it can be a bit fiddly to
set up and can produce problems like the one I just had, I can't honestly say
I find it all that strange or alien.  I've had a couple of bouts with Red Hat
(the last one was the somewhat quirky RH8) and found that unsatisfactory
because (apart from problems with the implementation) I found I was out of
sync with many of its defaults.

All this may be just me.  I haven't had a decent look at distros like Ubuntu,
and this is why I ask my question.  What, in a nutshell, is their appeal?
One one level it's all Unix, of course, but, given that, what are the
appealing differences?

Cheers,
Malcolm Johnston

Re: [SLUG] Sharpening an image.

2009-01-09 Thread mark adrian bell
Hi Bill,

If you can extract the series of frames that interest you as a group of
individual image files (sorry, don't know which program to use), then you could
sharpen them as a batch using Imagemagick.

Imagemagick: http://www.imagemagick.org/
Tutorial: http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/
Background on sharpening:

I've a file taken with a mobile phone.

 The detail is execrable.

It's important to identify a couple of faces in the
 file.

I've asked around. The best I have is to go through the
 file, select a
critical frame, download it and use The Gimp to sharpen a
 given face.

First off, can this be done?

Secondly, can it be done in one sweep for critical frame
 +/- 10 frames?

(the reason: should the sharpening not be good enough, I
 might be able to
recognise a face by the way it looks---like the
 slightly blurred Mona
 Lisa of some psychological tests).

 Any help etc.

 Regards,

 Bill Bennett.

Re: [SLUG] Re: setting up to install eeebuntu via thumbdrive

2009-01-06 Thread mark adrian bell
Hi Kevin,

As I recall, the first thing I did was use my desktop machine to download a
copy of the Xubuntu live CD. I then booted that on my desktop machine and
clicked the desktop link to make a bootable USB drive of Xubuntu. Either that,
or I downloaded and installed UNbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/) to
make a bootable USB drive. When I booted the Eepc, I had to press F2 to get
it to boot from the USB drive. Once I had Xubuntu booted, instalation to the
Epc went like clockwork. Then I downloaded the customized Epc kernel
from Array.org and installed that (http://www.array.org/ubuntu/) and since
then, everything just works and I take my Epc everywhere with a big penguin
on top for everyone to see. Hope that helps,

  SLUGgers,

I have fallen into a black hole regarding setting up a
 thumbdrive so
that I can install eeebuntu on my eee 701. I've
 found some very expert
advice if I were running Ubuntu or even Windows on my
 desktop, but
Debian Etch doesn't seem to rate a mention
 (unetbootin might work if I
could install it but it says that the i386 version is
 64 bit).

Can someone please point me to a URL that might let me
 achieve Nirvana?

  Thanks,

  Kevin.

btw - the reason I'd be interested is that Xandros
 has clagged out my
network connections and I can't see why - probably
 parallel
configurations with the less useful winning. Anyway -
 it's sexy to keep
  changing (?)

[SLUG] Beginner firewall question

2008-12-17 Thread mark adrian bell
I'm running Xubuntu on an Eeepc. I don't run a web server or an ssh server or
telnet or ftp or rsync or anything like that. Am I correct in assuming that I
don't need a firewall, or should I install Firestarter just in case?

Thanks,

One of the design features of Ubuntu, initially, was that
 it should have
no need of a firewall out of the box — nothing listening
 on the network
 at all.

Assuming that you don't run any network services you
 absolutely do not
 need a firewall ... but.

The but, in this case, is that a firewall you don't
 need now might save
you one day when, for example, you install a package that
 pulls in a
network service — and the cost of the redundant firewall
 is pretty
 small.
