Err, could you describe exact;ly what you did for installation? It may be that you have just installed the base system and now you need to install the various components? does locate xdm or locate gdm or locate kdm produce anything? Like a list of paths? Alternatively, less /var/log/XF86* , or less /var/log/xdm give you any information? tail /var might be better. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
[SLUG] Debian 3.1
Thanks to Jeff, Ken and Simon. I had been trying startx but when nothing happened I had assumed I was using the wrong input. Since getting your replies I have tried two reinstalls but each time end up in the same place. Maybe the DVD I am using from the latest Linux Format magazine has a glitch? Nevertheless will try again. John. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

Hi all, Well I have waited a long time to get my hands on a copy of Debian 3.1 and finally got it. Now my problem is that it gets as far as loading the installer and it has trouble reading the data. Does anyone have any ideas as I have emailed Debian and as yet got no reply. You could log in and type 'startx', or you could install a display manager such as gdm (if you like GNOME) or kdm (if you like KDE) - then it will give a graphical login prompt by default. - Jeff -- Ubuntu USA & Europe Tour: Oct-Nov 2005http://wiki.ubuntu.com/3BT "The plural of lego is legouch, from when you tread on those plural on the floor in bare feet." - Telsa Gwynne -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[SLUG] Debian 3.1 Bondi Junction
Dear Sluggers, Im live at Bondi Junction and wondering where I can get the newest version of Debian 3.1? I dont have a good internet connection to take 2 DVD from the Debian site. Anyone willing to give me the iso files or the 2 DVDs? For a reasonable price for the blank DVDs and the burning, its alright for me. Thanks, Phillipus __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! It's not the version numbers that bind us. ;) It's having a whole slew of packages available for easy maintenance. I can easily build from tarball and grab packages from backports.org and so on but it does make life easier to be able to just do a simple apt-get from the base and get what you want that way (backports.org and suchlike come close to that). -- "To the extent that we overreact, we proffer the terrorists the greatest tribute." - High Court Judge Michael Kirby -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

And the unseasonably bad tempratures in Hell appear to be affecting my local area too. It's a wee bit nippy of late. Still, as much as I truly like using debian this is a test release for me. I enjoy the stability of debian and I have no need to be on the bleeding edge (as that runs counter to the stability idea for me) but 3 years between releases is a bit much so I want to see how long it'll take them to get past sarge and make etch stable. If it's another daft wait then things have gotten too silly. That being said, you don't really /need/ the bleeding edge for a lot of things. With the security updates that came it's easy enough to keep things secure. About the only thing I've come up against where woody was itching to be updated are perl modules, php and samba.
