Thanks Dave,
I'm sorry that it's taken so long but I have been doing other things as
well. It's starting to make sense and, of course, you were right.
Enabling 'debug' in /etc/ppp/options and running 'pon primus' elicits
'/usr/sbin/pppd: invalid numeric parameter '<9>' for idle option'
in syslog.
I have tried them from 2 to 10 with no difference. I have disabled
'demand' and 'persist' in the Advanced section of 'pppconfig' and have
enabled 'demand' but not 'persist' in /etc/ppp/options.
What am I missing here?

any errors in syslog about it?
if not, enable pppd debugging ('debug' option in /etc/ppp/options
I think) and do it again and see what errors you get.
if it's only after 1 min, sounds like you're not authenticating
properly or the lcp echo timeout things are disconnecting it.
Read up on lcp echo timeout/interval options to pppd if that's
the case.
Dave.
