[SLUG] Re: SMB Client

2005-08-31 Thread Bill

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply.

Didn't make myself clear - I did have to set up smb.conf , which I assume
Konqueror uses to access Sama, but my experience with LinNeighbourhood and
SMB4K was that these prgs regularly lost their settings and especially lost
the previously "found" Workgroup and Server dtails. This occurred on
several PCs, all running various Deb based distros. May just be my setup,
or possibly that the Mepis SOHO server is beta.

Thats strange cos I thought SMB4K integrated with Konqueror nicely.
it does on my Debian stable system (sarge) that I upgraded from knoppix
something.

I like smb4k, i think it kicks as an smb browser/mounter.

I've set up a SOHO File/Print Server using Mepis SOHO beta and have found
that neither SMB4K or LinNeighborhood are 100% reliable for browsing Samba
shares.

Konqueror, however, never fails.

In addition, Konqueror does not require you to edit any config files/set up
any preferences for this purpose, but both SMB4K and LinNeighborhood do.

Use Konqueror and save yourself some work on each of the workstations.

I'm old
I'm a command line junkie (I love vi)
I setup a linux box, in leau of winders, for a mate, then had to learn a file
manager to show him, now have him agreeing that konqueror is nicer than
win-explorer.

SuSE's subfs (auto mount) and konqueror's view profiles have proven an
absolute success with my install.

An hour learning the ropes pays huge dividends
No stability problems in 18 months of use, heck I even use it as the easiest
way of sorting/deleting my 100s of PDFs
