Sluggers,

I've used Linux for some years now but I've struck an issue on which I need a 
quick fix to my ignorance on - I ask of your knowledge on the following:

I have on this machine [195.168.0.1] Mandrake 10.1 on an AMD 64 bit Athlon 3k 
cpu with .5g ram and 2 80g HDD's and typically run kde 3.2.3 as my desk top.

I have an 8 port 10/100 ethernet network switch which permits me to connect 
computers with each other, I have this machine, a Tosh A10 Satellite 
[195.168.0.2] and a dual boot mandrake / windoesn't box [195.168.0.3] which 
MYOB's my accounts [please tell me there is a linux replacement to MYOB].

 So far I am able to transfer files between the laptop and this machine, this 
is done where I share photos and the like between the laptop and this 
machine, for this I use gftp and log in to the user on the Toshiba and 
control the transfer from 195.168.0.1. ie, I start gftp from 195.0.168.0.1, 
then specify the connection to 195.168.0.2:21 user nick pswd x and 
push enter and I can see the contents of 195.168.0.2 from 195.0.168.0.1, and 
can freely transfer files both ways using 195.168.0.1. I would like to be 
able to do this from konqueror instead of gftp [despite its brilliance] 
because there are other [ugh] windows users who need to do the same thing 
though they do not grok any of this, gftp would be 'too hard' for them. How 
can this be done? How can it be done from [ugh] windoesn't?

so I might be able to get a bt card and do it via that.. ideas please?

SQL-Ledger runs my business - handles GST as well.

iptables running somewhere?
crossover button on the switch box?

I don't run Mandrake, but I might be able to help get you started on a
solution to your problem. I won't be able to supply screenshots. Perhaps
someone else can assist by translating what I offer here into Mandrake.

Hmm, nope, that's an odd one, if I've understood your network correctly.

Without knowing any detail I can tell you that this sort of problem
usually relates to you configuring a 'default route' on your ethernet
interface that overrides the default route that is normally pointing to
the Internet via your PPP interface. You don't need, or want, a default
route on your ethernet interface, so if you've got one, remove it. The
default route might appear as a configuration item for a 'gateway'. The
only default route you want is the one that pppd will provide with its
'defaultroute' option.

If you look at the routing table on the this machine, you should see
something like:

10.200.253.0  0.0.0.0  255.255.255.0   U 0  00 eth0

The last line, the route to '0.0.0.0' is the default route I'm talking
about. You only want one of those. If you see another one configured
when your ethernet interface is up, that'll be part of your problem.


Your laptop machine should be configured something like this:

iface eth0 inet static
address 195.168.0.2
network 195.168.0.0
netmask 255.255.255.0
broadcast 195.168.0.255
gateway 195.168.0.1

and your 'accounts' machine should look similar, albeit with it's own IP
address instead.


If you want your laptop and windows machines to be able to share your
Internet connection, then you'll need to configure what is sometimes
called Network Address Translation, or IP-Masquerade on your 'this' machine.

On my own machine here I use these commands:

/sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
/sbin/iptables -I FORWARD 1 -p tcp --tcp-flags SYN,RST SYN -m tcpmss
--mss 1400:1536 -j TCPMSS --clamp-mss-to-pmtu

But it is possible that Mandrake includes some way of automating this,
or even of configuring this transparently for you.

You can use konqueror or firefox to transfer files by running http 
(apache) and
ftp server (vfstp) in your 195.168.0.2 (but this ip address is probably 
problematic

I am puzzled by your use of 195.168.0.1, etc in your network.  This 
network addresses
belong to an organization in Europe.  Are you certain you are the user 
of this network
addresses ? You probably meant to use network addresses 192.168.0.1, 
etc. This
probably explains why you cannot use the Internet, because when you send 
messages
out to the internet, the reply messages are routed out to that 
organization in Europe and
not returned to your network. 195.168.0.1, etc are public address block 
whilst

192.168.0.1, etc are private address block.  Pls check RFC 1918.

Also run this #whois 195.168.0.1  on a machine with working internet 
access and

note the info.

Or perhaps, you have an arrangement with that Organization to use that 
IP-address block ?
If you have made an arrangement, you still have to ask your ISP provider 
to route that

address block to your network.

Some things to play around with.

Are the nic lights blinking on 0.1 when pinging from 2?
Run tcpdump on 0.1 to see if ping gets there

ping might be getting to 0.1 but not making it back to 2/3?

# iptables -L  check if firewall is not up (policy ACCEPT)

What are the results from 'netstat -rn' from all machines?

192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 should point to gateway 192.168.0.1

To get across interfaces eth0 and ppp0 on 0.1
echo 1  /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
