[SLUG] gdm displays

2001-02-02 Thread dmgray

I have posted another question earlier on gdm but still need some help.

I have two RH 6.2 boxes, both running gdm linked together on a private
network. I would like to be able to log into either box from a single
workstation.

I have read as much as I could on X, gdm, etc. and still cannot figure out
how to do it, if it can be done.

>From my Windows box, I can see both hosts via xdmcp using XWin32 but I
cannot figure out how to do the same with Linux.

Many thanks if someone can help.

Dennis

If I understand this correctly, you want to view gdm through a linux box?

If so, try ORL VNC, do a search on altavista with those words and access the
.uk site only.
the reason i say that is the others could be security risks, im not sure but
never visited them.

Okay, GDM is a bit of a mess at the moment. :) Red Hat shipped a beta2
version of it, whilst Ximian has a beta4 version of it, and the current
maintainer (George Lebl, who was out here for lca) is having a whale of a
time getting it up to speed for the Gnome 1.4 release.

Essentially, XDMCP has been broken and fixed in so many versions, with so
many patches not provided for upstream, that it's unsurprising you're having
trouble.

Which version of GDM are you running? Best bet is to grab the latest Ximian
one, and see how that goes.

Nope...I want to use X to view the display from the other box, not VNC.

Thanks

1) Update /etc/gdm/gdm.conf:
Ensure in [xdmcp] section, Enable=1
2) Restart gdm on host machine
3) Check gdm access
From within X, "gdmchooser"
4) On client machine either:
a) outside of X :
"X -query host"
b) within X (requires Xnest ; for debian apt-get install xnest)
"Xnest :1 -query"
