bogofilter runs at the client end just before mail goes into your mailbox,
whilst you are downloading it.

Mozilla mail also has a nifty spam thingy which works pretty much the same
way, for when people just can't have procmail filter first, which is very
handy for relatives... a big fat button which marks a mesasge as spam is
ideal for users.

P.S. there's a mail-followup-to header in my messages for a reason.

What we don't know is how many spams the filters stopped. No filter is
perfect, but if they've caught 99% then we really don't have any right
to complain about the 1% that got though.

Given that I get something like 150 spams a day to one of my email
addresses (it comes to me via an old .forward to which I no longer have
access and have been unsuccessful in having removed), an average of 1.5
per day from slug + slug-chat is pretty damn good in comparison.

 BEFORE it leaves your ISP.

Or better still, be before it leaves the spammers machine.

Cheers,

John

Thanks for some positive feedback. :-)

Last time I counted, the figure was considerably less than 1%. But
yeah, it's jumped up again lately. I, for one, don't draw a salary from
SLUG though, so won't be able to look at the filters until later
tonight.

Sorry for the hassles, and the abnormal length of this thread.

personally, I don't see the problem with making it a hidden list.
However, there may be reasons for not doing so which all seem to ilude

Oh God, don't go there Richard... It will never happen... I've raised
this innumerable times in the past and, while I will NEVER agree with
the committee's reasons for not doing so, they have decided that a
members only list is inappropriate.

No, only twice, once each on slug and slug-chat, but they referred to
the same site as some of the others that slipped through -
free.gordontower.com.

Since the beginning of the month, 17 (total for both slug and
slug-chat) have slipped through the filters and SpamAssassin has caught
every one. Three scored only 5.5, ten scored 7.2 and four scored 9.3.

Well Im not a member of slug-chat and I have had that email
about 5 times to the slug list...

I can count at least 8 ( of this sort of spam ) from the main slug list
alone :)

Top posting is not bad, I'm all for it .. more top posting please,

I use pine, and I sometimes have a bloody slow link, having to scroll down
through pages of message to read one is annoying as crap, and yeah I know
people should trim their replies, but I use pine, and I sometimes have a
bloody slow link, and having to delete pages of crap so I can reply to a
message usually means I top post instead because did I mention I use pine
and I sometimes have a slow link. :-)

Dave.

Top posting, reply not trimmed and an 18 line sig. I'd expect better

While bogofilter is probably a damn ghood idea, it doesn't address the
vast majority of users who probably have one machine connected to their

I can see what Richard is saying - if we can't stop it at the source
