No it should be fine as long as its enabled as UDMA in the bios. Some
bios' let you manually
choose UDMA levels. I'd just leave it as UDMA enabled and as you say,
use the 80 wire cable.

Happy to help. Hope it all goes well.

Dion,

brand new, but, according to the specs, the HD is UDMA 5, '100Mb/s'
(must've picked up a cheap brand..)

is there anything to be done to enable 'max transfer speed', apart from
setting UDMA in BIOS ? and, use 80wire ribbon

I guess I'll go and test the HD on the system, before I go too far.

anyhow, now I'm thinking perhaps I should get a spare system, rather than,
spare HD.

thanks for your help

UDMA66 is only good for 66 MB/s transfer rates.

If your hard disk is brand new, it most likely supports ATA133 (133MB/s)
so it's

capable of higher transfer rates than your motherboard supports.

If you only have this one drive then I doubt the ATA transfer rate is
likely to bite.
If you were building some kind of raid array with a number of drives
then it might

make a difference.

Mostly if anything, I'm thinking only the size of your hard drive might
cause problems

if your bios didn't support one that large.

One option you may try, is to go into your bios on that machine and
making sure you
select an ide device not currently in use, try choosing to manually set
the number of
cylinders / heads and so forth as listed on your drive and see if the
bios reports the correct size.
On an award bios, the size is shown as you enter the values for the
cylinders / heads etc.

If you get the correct size then have a strong indication that its
likely to work correctly.

Cheers.

I think that it should be ok; there's some old
kernels can't handle bigger than 33.something Gb.

The next problem occurs at 137Gb for some controllers.

Neither should concern you.

One thing to ensure is that both machines
use LBA addressing.

Dion,

as far as I recall, it's 'IDE : Two Ultra DMA66 ports'
what limitations does that pose ?

I can't recall if there were problems with largish hard drives going
into P3 class machines.
You might get some clues by going to the download site for new bios' for
your machines
motherboard and look at the comments / changes made in recent bios
revisions.

Do you know what sort of ATA controller / motherboard chipset you have?

You might find that the hard drive if it does work, will be limited to
ATA66 or ATA100.

Sorry, not much help really.
