Re: [RCSE] HLG battery life questions
Discharge rate of 125 MA. Looking at my records, for some reason these packs were not tested when new, but that was only maybe three months ago anyway. My 110s tested at 115-120 MAh with the same discharge current. Recognizing that the tester could be giving an erroneous reading with so high a discharge rate, I would still expect the real-world life of the 80s to approach better than 50 perrcent of the 110s, if not higher. If I can ascertain whether NiMH cells can be charged with the same equipment as NiCADs, I'll go that route, since it seems that much more capacity is available with less weight. I'm running an experiment now along those lines. Not many testers will go this low. Typically at 5C (400ma) discharge you could see a 30% decrease from Rated Capacity. I agree the 35-43 mah does seem low, as long as your discharge current was not too terribly high. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] RE: Using Jap Tissue
Apply shiny-side up to open structure with a glue stik, or white glue thinned 50/50 with water. The former leaves some residue, but the latter makes the tissue weak until it dries, so choose your poison. Dope directly onto sheet or solid structure. Shrink with a light mist of water or better yet rubbing alcohol. Just get it damp, not soggy. It shrinks up nicely as it dries. Keep it secure, this is where warps can happen. For rubber-power stuff, one or two coats of 50/50 nitrate dope (or Sig Lite Coat butyrate) and thinner is usually sufficient to seal the pores. A few more coats will be necessary for a glossy finish. Powered applications need fuelproofing, taking several more coats of butyrate dope. Use colored tissue if possible, it's lighter than colored dope. For the most brilliant color, choose a tissue as close as possible to the color you want, and then spray on ONE coat of colored dope. [RCSE] Handlaunch Shoulder Syndrome
This Spring and summer I made a serious attempt to learn how to fly HLG. What I learned was all about shoulder strain. The XC Nats might have had a hand in it. My job on the XC team was to throw the monster plane. "So, what do you do on the XC team, Nagel?" "I throw up." Anyway, the right shoulder got so bad I was having trouble combing my hair and using the remote for the garage door opener. It was getting close to the proverbial "Can't find his ass with both hands" situation. One of the hands wasn't working. Is that an excuse? I suspect that I am not alone in this problem, and I have been researching treatments. So here is a three step program to cure Handlaunch Shoulder Syndrome that seems to be working for me. A. Make a minor modification to your HLG, to help prevent further injury. Carefully locate the CG on the fuselage, and make a small mark at that point. Drill a hole in the bottom of the fuse 1/4" ahead of that point and install a little towhook. 2. Naproxen, two tabs twice a day. III. A series of four very low impact and simple exercises. -- bend over so your torso is more or less horizontal, let your arm hang down and gently swing your extended arm around in a circle, going first clockwise 12 turns and then counterclockwise 12 turns. Don't do anything that hurts. Each day, add a few circles. -- stand up and pretend you are using the arm on one end of a crosscut saw--12 or so push-pulls on the saw. Each day add a few saw cuts. --hold your arms to your sides and gently flap like a bird. If you are a severely wounded bird, like I was, just flap a foot or so up from your side, and do 12 or so flaps. Each day flap the arms a little higher and a little longer. --shrug your shoulders, and from time to time pretend you are trying to hold a soccer ball between hour shoulder blades. John B wrote: Apparently the Hitec "Spectra" module (http://www.hitecrcd.com/Catalog/Air/Other/spectra_72mhz.html) plugs right into the Futaba 8UAFS and allows you to safely set the tx frequency to any channel. Has anyone verified that this works, and are there any pitfalls to doing this? Hi John, The module works great in the 8U. The only trick is you have to confirm that the RF bar on the screen is solid. The module has to be pulled out and reinserted with the power on to get a solid signal. I have used it with Futaba, Berg, FMA, Hitec and MPX receivers without any problems. I should note however there is some thought out there that it may not be completely legal to operate since the 8U was not the transmitter certified by the FCC for its use. Darwin N. Re: [RCSE] Handlaunch Shoulder Syndrome
Don't think so. I threw a Red Herring for a while and it is just a whole other set of muscles and strains from that action. Jut takes working up to it. Working out with a HLG can be Heaven or Hell. The better you get a working lift the less you'll hurt. When the air is flat put it down and wait. You know when there is lift!!! How do I get it to the field? My car will barly fit the wing from my 126-2m and the coyote wing only fits if I'm willing to rest it on the passenger seat and rear deck. Should I build a cartopper? I know this plane isn't competative any more, but how well does it fly? I'm looking to use it to learn flap control and such, it's my next step from an olyII for thermal flying.
