[RCSE] Discus Launch Conversion?

2001-01-28 Thread Crash Kealoha

Just wondering about the feasibility of converting a convention pod and boom
HLG into a discus launch. Is this a possibility? Things to consider?
Problems? Details: bagged poly wing, skinny carbon tailboom,
rudder/elevator, weighs about 8 oz. RTF.
Thanks!

I was looking at the MPX Milan. Has anyone flown this plane? It appears to
have a very unique planform (sweepback?), how does it work?

[RCSE] Diode in JR 388 ??

2001-01-28 Thread Robert P. Buxton

I'm assuming there is a diode in the JR 388 transmitter, since several
years ago I tried to check the Tx battery voltage/cycle the battery down
and proceeded to blow the fuse. Just purchased a Sirius Super Test and
would like to have the ability to cycle the Tx batteries with this tester.
Question, what is involved in removing the diode? Is this something that I
might be able to do? I don't imagine JR repair would look kindly on this
request although warranty is certainly not an issue. All thoughts and
suggestions are welcome.

BTW using the Sirius Pro Series charger on a new 300 Mah SR Battery Pack,
cycled 5 times with the Super Charger and the Super Test yielded a pack
capacity of 371 Mah. Likewise, a Sanyo/JR 270 Mah battery pack cycled the
same way produced a capacity of 317 Mah. Both were cycled down @ 125 Mah
rate. Who says we don't get our moneys worth these days.

Brian,
I will go in with you on the rental if we can't find any other way. What are you
flying? If we can find a driver, I can time and spot for you and you can for me. How
many hours does the average 10K usually take? We should probably register for the XC
event to clear a frequency.

Re: [RCSE] MAJOR RCHLG CONTEST DATE CONTEST or . . .

2001-01-28 Thread David A. Enete

Yes, it looks like the BAR/CSS event will conflict with the Mid-South
event (June 22-24). I'm not sure if the handlaunch event is AMA
sanctioned, but perhaps a contest coordinator fell asleep at the
wheel when considering draw area?

MY INFORMATION HAS BEEN that the MIDSOUTH SOARING CHAMPIONSHIPS are
to be held covering these SAME DATES!!?? RCHLG to be the 23!!
WHY!!?? The conflict!!??

2001-01-28 Thread Jason Werner

Not sure where the MidSouth is this year, but since it is in the "south" and
the HL contest is in PA, there would not be any contest location protection
from the AMA.

Sucks that they are on similar dates, but that was the date that the ESL
(the majority of the participants in the HL contest) had avail. Perhaps
some more "planning" and early announcement on everyone's behalf woudl help.

Re: [RCSE] Discus Launch Conversion?

2001-01-28 Thread Bill Rose Haymaker

This seems like this is what is coming down to.
I guess anyone who is going to be competitive this year will have to convert
their plane's or purchase a Discus style plane.
Here's an idea, lets split the contest up in three groups,

Advantage = Discus throw
 Expert

Disadvantage = Javelin throw
 Expert
 Sportsman

What ever happened to the good old days? It seems like just last year you
went to one of our local contest and everyone threw javelin style, and it
was fun ;-).

Please don't take this as whining. I have no problem with change. I am
already trying to redesign my Mini Manti lookalike to side arm.
It will be difficult for javelin style to compete.

I have witnessed Denny Maize, you know that "OFUBG (thats old fat ugly bald
guy)", throw his new sidearm design with very little effort then me doing a
contest throw conventional style (run and throw). I will have to be honest;
his launches were as high if not a little higher.

My 2 cents

Comments?

Bill

Brian,
Your absolutely correct, I did know that, however read on. Plugged the Tx
in after your
E-mail works just fine, Thank you. I now think I know why I blew
the fuse several years ago. I used a Tower Hobby ESV and had the polarity
reversed on the meter or actually did not have it reversed for the JR
plug, voila blown fuse. Guess we are never too old to learn. I
guess I was just timid to try the tester because of my previous
experience and ignorance and knowing that I would probably have to
go to Radio Shack to get a new fuse if it blew, since my wife has put my
spares ones some where logical to her(and then forgot where) but
certainly not logical to me.

Thanks to all that responded, all with the same above advice.

Unfortunately for some if you don't keep up with current technology in any
sport you move to the rear of the pack. We didn't create new classes for
poly vs aileron, or 10 oz. vs sub-10oz., wood vs composite, etc... Besides,
who wants to fly to same ole planes? My shoulder will love me when I get up
the scratch for a wing-throwing machine. BTW, I'll still be way back in the
pack!

[RCSE] Nostalgia ?

2001-01-28 Thread Mark and Jo Gellart

I was roaming the www this morning and was at the Dream Catcher site looking
at what was happening with all the Airtronics kits. There was a statement
associated with the Aquila XL kit that said that this ship was only legal
with a fiberglass hatch and not the clear one as on a normal Aquila fuse. I
thought that it was the outline that had to be accurate and that the
surfaces had to be the same style (ie. flying stab vs fixed stab/elevator)
as the original. I thought you could mess with poly angles, add spoilers to
those that did not have them, and use contrsuction techniches however as
long as the appearance of the ship was the same. My Grand Esprit has a
painted and glassed over Canopy so the batteries can be there and that my
black boxes can be in the fuse, is that an infingement of the rules? Hope
not!

I was roaming the www this morning and was at the Dream Catcher site
looking
at what was happening with all the Airtronics kits. There was a statement
associated with the Aquila XL kit that said that this ship was only legal
with a fiberglass hatch and not the clear one as on a normal Aquila fuse.

I had the same thoughts about 2 weeks ago.

I called them and what they said to me was, in the past, the keeper of the
nostalgia rules was asked if by bringing out a Grand Esprit with a one peice
molded fiberglass fuselage would be legal, the keeper (Jack something??) of
the rules said it would not be legal. Because the original had a wood pod
and fiberglass boom.

So using that as a guide line, they guessed it would not be legal to use a
clear canopy, when the original kit had a molded fiberglass one.

They said, that's why they offer both and certify the molded fiberglass one
as being on the original plans.

They said, they felt that it would be misleading if they said anything else.
The builder would have to work it out with the CD's.

The rules say something about, the original plans, as proof. The original
plans show a molded fiberglass canopy.

That's one that should be offered for response from the keeper of the
nostalgia rules.

Dream Catcher said that, the rulling by Jack is one of the reasons they have
delayed bringing out the Grand Esprit. They feel that the market for a wood
fuselage would be small and that a one or even two peice fuselage would have
a much larger market.

I told them that I aggreed and that I'd always buy a fiberglass fuselage
over a wooden one any day.

Is (Jack ??) on RCSE?

Marc--

I've read the Nostalgia class rules at
http://www.skybench.com/nostalgia/rules.html and as far as I can tell your Aquila is
legal with either the 'glas or clear hatch.

You might want to contact Ray Hayes and get a "definitive" answer.

I'm flying the Windfree now, and am finishing up the restoration of the Oly 99. Old
planes are funky... :)
