Once we get this going a little we will start LSF level 1 programs. The
Panda class should be a boon to soaring.

The Plane will do fine and the radio is just what a beginner needs. Not too

We all would like to see more kids and / or beginners get into soaring, and

[RCSE] Harley's Hookers

2001-04-18 Thread Harley Michaelis

Fellows. . .The only subject I sent mail about on the 18th was the Harley's
Hookers panel retainer idea.

I can't explain it, but I'm getting copies of a slug of RCSE mail on various
unrelated subjects that shows me as the sender. Only my e-mail address is
shown on these unrelated messages, so I can't respond to those who actually
sent them.

If any of you are anticipating an answer to something, try me again, in
response to this post.

"Jack D". The plastic strips do not stretch. Note in the 2nd sketch that
there is a screw that can be tightened to provide resistance to disengaging
if that is what you meant.

"Joe". . .your name was at the bottom of one of the wierd e-mails I got
showing me as the sender. If you wanted me to send you the drawing, I can
send a .bmp file. Write me again, please so I have your address.

Re: [RCSE] Model Rocket Engines on a Pico Jet

2001-04-18 Thread Aerofoam

There was a guy in Phx. that was in to the high end rocket gliders, he was
going to put one of the aerotec reloadable motors in a 6oz. version of my
36" delta wing.
His motor would put his 7oz. plane to over 1000 ft.
The motor can be configured with different nozzles and amounts of fuel.
He had it set to put out about 23oz. of thrust for 9 seconds, really cool
stuff.

RE: [RCSE] Model Rocket Engines on a Pico Jet

2001-04-18 Thread Yunger, Ken (NGC)

Paul,
A group of us here in southern Maryland are doing the very same thing. We
are using a rather tired looking combat foamie, a Studio B Foaminator,
loaded with some serious rocket propulsion. I don't know if this has ever
been done before, probably has, but we are having a blast. Flight testing
began during lunch breaks. Our first launch was with a D-12 engine. This was
rather disappointing-very under powered. Since then we have worked our way
up to E's, F's and finally a G-40 motor. This is about a large as you can go
without an explosives licensee. Each motor letter increase, doubles the
specific impulse. Each time we stepped up to a larger motor, I fully
expected my "Rocket Foaminator" to disintegrate, never to be seen again. So
far it hasn't. This thing is just a dot when reaching the apex. Hang time is
reasonable. All the fun is in the fire and smoke. Hard to imagine this
glider, made of foam and tape belching fire out its belly, powered with up
to 18 pounds of thrust! This thing easily exceeds 125 mph. DS one way. Up!!

The Foaminator is 48" span, straight mid wing ship, with a Corplast V-tail.
Epp foam throughout. The actual rocket conversion took less than an hour. It
involves cutting a channel in the fuse for the motor just behind the wing
trailing edge, angled up at about 15-20 degrees, passing through the
airplane vertical cg. I made this cut using a sharpened ~29 mm aluminum
tube. You know you've got the thrust line through the cg when the airplane,
with tube imbedded in the foam, can balance on the end of the tube. Next
just insert a standard cardboard 29 mm motor mount in the channel you cut
and tape it in place with filament tape. The forward end of the tube needs
to be sealed off to hold the motor and facilitate ejection. Our motors are
held in the tube by friction and thrust. They eject 4 to 7 seconds after
burnout and just free fall. This gets rid of some weight for the glide home.
Most importantly, the plane must be balanced with the motor in place before
the launch. As we change motors in the field, I add or subtract weight as
required. The forward cg shift after motor ejection is inconsequential.

I have several mpg video clips of the launches, but no web site to post
them. I am willing to e-mail them offline to anyone interested. If anyone
has a web site I can post to, that would be better yet.

Subject: [RCSE] Model Rocket Engines on a Pico Jet

I saw a Pico Jet at Coyote today. That was a sharp-looking
little foamie. And (the part I love), it wasn't covered with
tape (I hate taping models, personal thing).

This was a neat teal color, of what looked like EPP or similar.

Anyway, it looks like it would be really fun to find a safe
way and environment in which to put a rocket engine in
and have a hoot (I'm talking about the little Estes
engines).

If one was to do this (again, putting safety first), where
would one attach the engines? What about thrust
vectoring, and the possibility of C.G. shift?

Is this absurd? I don't know, but for some reason
it just seems fun (to do in a safe way in a safe place).

Re: [RCSE] HLG Tasks

2001-04-18 Thread Steve Pasierb

Hi Tom.  Thanks for the comments.  We at the ECHLC,
like the IHLGF, have made the conscious decision not to totally re-make the
contest based upon what may happen, but rather to learn from 2001 and grow into
the future.  2001 is going to have to be a test bed for us all (especially
experiences from the ECHLC, IHLGF and NATS) for what changes need to occur
downstream in tasks, rounds, rules, separate divisions, etc for this entire
1.5 meter aspect of the hobby.  The paramount concern for now is safety,
safety, safety.

We literally had dozens of proposals, handicap schemes,
etc. offered up to us that in one way of the other are
lacking (if we make a huge task as you suggest in your e-mail to address the
DSLers launch height then the overhand guys are still at a disadvantage if there
is no lift).  There is a huge evolutional shift going on.  Even
the DSL flyers are out-innovating designs that were considered extraordinary
just a few months ago.  Some even posit that DSL will be the death of
competition as any task times will simply be too easy to achieve flying 9 ounce
airplanes.  Time for HLG F3B (by the way that's a fun idea as proven after
the CASA Triad HLG contest).

I must say that I flew DSL extensively both days this past
weekend and I did not incur any of the aches and pain that I used to get after
hours of overhand throwing.  It was really fun!

Be well.  See you soon!  Thanks.

The biggest thing I see that will give the Discus guys the
advantage is that all the flights are limited in duration.  There is not

duration.  The discus guys can get their times in many cases just from

[RCSE] CO2 Canisters and HLG?

2001-04-18 Thread Paul Klissner

I haven't done HLG, but I'm guessing the point is that
you want to be able to sky out nice compact gliders
in potentially small open areas with minimal equipment.

Seems to me the join-wrecking Olympic sportsmanship stuff
is secondary to the main goal. But I'm sure some people
really enjoy that physical aspect of competition.

Has anyone tried some sort of CO2 cartridge JATO launch
assist scheme, where a small standard compressed CO2 gas
cartridge is held in place only by its own thrust
and falls off near the point of diminishing return?

I admit it is wild speculation, and probably wouldn't work
because of the weight of the cartridge vs. the energy you
could get out of it. But it would be really neat if it did!

[RCSE] ESC - problem

2001-04-18 Thread Stefan Smets

I have a problem with a Schulze slim-18be electronic speed controller, in
fact with two of these: when I let the motor turn without prop, it turns
fine, but with the prop, it stops after about a second, and I can hear the
controller beep once, as if it is resetting.

I'm using a Permax 6v 400, 7cell NiMH (Sanyo Twicell) with a Multiplex
Gearbox 400L (the motor was included with the gearbox. The ESC has as
indications: 18/25A, 6-8 celles BEC 5V/1, 5A. My dealer assures me the ESC
is ok for this motor with this batteries, but he doesn't understand the
problem either. He proposed to send the ESC to the dealer; I agreed and
bought another one to be able to continue flying (the first one would be
gone for at least 2 weeks), but that other one has the same problem (I'm
going back to my dealer tomorrow).

When I try with a ESC from Protec (also for 18A), it works fine.

Anybody an idea what is going on ?

Thanks,

Stefan.

[RCSE] Gordy pt. II

2001-04-18 Thread Paul Klissner

Well, I was trying. But when I re-read it, it seemed
a little mean-spirited to be funny with that last-email
I sent about Gordy.

So what I should really say is, sure, I've found
Gordy annoying at times, and at times I've disagreed
with him strongly.

But overall, Gordy has been extremely helpful to me,
and I owe to him some of the best improvements to my
rigs, both from his private posts and his articles.

Further, for as much as I've incurred his wrath and
scorn, some of it deservedly, I don't find him to
be a grudge-holder nor vindictive, which is a quality
I respect a lot. He even told me I could send that
(now infamous) servo I had problems with to him and
he would try to see that it got diagnosed and remedied.
And he wasn't even the one who sold it to me, he just
has a sincere desire to make this hobby a better place.

The 2000mah NiCad C-cells and efficient arrangment in
my Stork: Gordy. The trim and setup instructions
for the Stork, from Europe, which I didn't get with the
kit, Gordy (and Jim Bacus). And two or three
other really *cool* improvements to my equipment, Gordy.
It is worth the occassional clashes, by far, to work
with Gordy. Gordy is dedicated to the sport. WYSIWYG
personality and all.

[RCSE] FMA eXtreme 5 micro RX ??

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the FMA eXtreme5 micro rx
. I was considering it for handlaunch . They (FMA) say it's a "full range"
rx , but is it really safe for yer basic specked-out glider use ? I would be
running it with a JR (pos shift) .

What other rx's fit the bill - or would be prefered ?

Are there any bullit proof 2 or 3 channel rx's worth considering for a poly
ship ?

Thanks for the bandwidth ,
