[RCSE] NYX- Something to check

2002-02-22 Thread Mike Reynell

Hi Guys

This is just a heads up for all NYX F3J
owners.

First let me say that this event should not stop
you buyinga F3J NYX or enjoying the one you may have. It is a great flying
machine and even after the following event I would still happily cough up for
one for myself...on with the story.

A friends F3J NYX bit the dust in a big way the
other day on launch and the post-mortem revealled a nasty surprise. The
NYXhewas flying has (had) a plastic elevator control snake modelled
on the Graupner plastic snakes with a thin piano wire inside. This is a system
which normally works OKIF you solder the wire into the connectors at both
ends and support it well.

On the NYX it would appear that they simply crimp
the wire AND plastic into the brass connector at the tail end on the F3J
version(The F3B version used a carbon pushrod and so should not suffer this
problem) resulting in a false sense of security and, if your unlucky, a total
lack of elevator control at the worst possible time. In this case it failed at
the top of launch before the zoom resulting in a perfect verticle decent to
terra firma at a very high rate.bin one NYX...A very sad day.

At this point, a week later, our local supplier has
not received a reply from the manufacturer regarding the situation and as we
should be able to learn from anothers experiences, please check yours before I
get to say that I told you so.

I would suggest that you inspect your linkage at
both ends to ensure its security and if its not soldered into the connectors,
fix it or replace it with carbon pushrods.

Re: [RCSE] Happiness is...

2002-02-22 Thread Joe G

Jim,

A good second place would be a mid-winter day, I don't have to work, with
light variable winds, temps in the 60's, new planes ready to fly, new radio
ready to fly, and the winch battery is charged!!! Like the day I have
forecasted tomorrow...

Hope it's the same or better with all...

Therms...

Joe

RE: [RCSE] Sagitta 600 Question

2002-02-22 Thread Buddy Roos

Glenn,

The Sagitta 600 is a great sailplane!!

Years ago, I bought a polyhedral Sagitta 600 I saw hanging
in a Hobby Shop. The next weekend I was walking out to the
winch when one of my friends asked me if I wanted him to
throw it so I could check the trim. He threw it and while I
was checking the trim I saw a small bump and put it into a
circle. It locked into the thermal and I ended up with a 10
minute flight on my first test glide. Later that afternoon,
I got my first 1 hour thermal flight flying the Sagitta. A
lot of the 1 hour flight was flown with me laying on my back
on the ground and the transmitter laying on the ground next
to me. After many fun flights with the Sagitta, I finally
lose it due to a bad transmitter battery.

Last week, a friend that flies power planes gave me an old
Sagitta 600 that he built years ago. The fuselage was in
really bad shape but a new fiberglass Sagitta fuselage from
Dream Catcher took care of that. I can't wait to get it
flying!!

Subject: [RCSE] Sagitta 600 Question

Would any of the former owners of the Sagitta 600 give me
there opinion of this sailplane? I would be interested in
its
flying characteristics such as penetration, speed, thermal
characteristics, when built as a polyhedral, (RES ) no
ailerons. Flying weight if known?

I am building the wing for another aeroplane, and I am
considering building the fuselage also if it was a good
plane.
I would be interested in knowing the things that you did not
like
about it also. I have read good comments about the Sagitta
600, but was not looking to building one at the time.

So if anyone can give me any information, I would appreciate
it.

[RCSE] Slingsby Sailplane Book Wanted

2002-02-22 Thread Martin Brungard

I'm interested in modeling one of the Slingsby sailplanes for a 5m ship.
Martin Simons has created a reportedly excellent book on the Slingsby line.
The problem is that the book doesn't seem to be available currently in the
U.S.

Does anyone have a copy they may consider selling or loaning to me?

Hahah, that's exactly how much mine took! I had to cram the stuff into the
canopy since there wasn't enough room in the weight compartment.

Just completed my first rc project in over 20 years. Spirit 2M as a
trainer for my boys and for me to sharpen up on prior to getting a
Spirit Elite ARF. Question ..does 2 3/4 ozs. in the nose seem
unreasonable? Balanced at 3 3/8 behind wing front. 3- HS-81 servs.

[RCSE] Great tips, info and support - Thanks to all

2002-02-22 Thread Robert Shepherd

I recently asked the exchange what many of you may have thought was a
mighty simple question How to limit play in servo arm, clevise and rod
linkages. I just want to say thanks to all of you gents who
responded. I continue to be amazed at the amount of info and support
you freely give. The RCSE list and those who share their knowledge and
experience on it are one of the great finds in this pursuit of
soaring. Thanks again to Kjell, Tom, George, Bill, Winchdoc, DUWorm,
Harley, Simon, Gordy, and all.

Would that be the Icon you stole/swiped/grabbed/snatched/bought before any
of us 'non-already flying an Icon' guys had a fair shot at it??? ;) Oh
well, I still have to finish the Eraser I picked up at 'Air'-izona. I
guess I just have to suffer with the Artemis tomorrow if I get out of work
early enough to fly at the SWSA field.
