[RCSE] Aerodynamics books

2002-06-11 Thread Monkey King

I've recently begun to grasp how little I understand about aerodynamics,
e.g. "Normally, an airfoil bends from about 25% from the LE; why are
control surfaces so small, then?" Or: "The Bernoulli explanation of lift
doesn't do it for me; isn't the job of an airfoil to create downward
thrust without stalling?" And so forth. Is there a good book around
about low RN aerodynamics? Maybe someone knows how to get ahold of some
papers by McCready or Selig? I have a book about full size aerodynamics,
but a lot of the time, the stuff doesn't apply.

[RCSE] Walkalong Glider Development

2002-06-11 Thread Scobie Puchtler or Sarah Felstiner

The Walkalong glider was originally invented by
Paul McCready's sons, Tyler and Parker, (maybe
with some guidance from dad?) hanging around in
their dad's hangar in the years of the Gossamer
Albatross development. I got the full story of the
original invention from Parker McCready a few
years back, though the details are slipping. I can
confirm that Tyler decided to take the idea to the
toy companies a year or two ago, and see who would
bite, and that he has benefitted from developing
the design in cooperation with whoever it is
that's making it for Walmart, Toys-R-Us, etc. Is
it in fact a Hasbro product? Anyway, it was not
stolen from the McCreadys, which is nice to see.

Re: [RCSE] AMA Safety Code Proposal

2002-06-11 Thread John Erickson

The AMA is just covering their behind on this one, if only for insurance
purposes. Don't they fly Quickie 500 races at the NATS? Ever seen this
type of race? You've got planes weighing around 4 pounds going 200 mph.
Compare that to foamy Zagi at 1 pound going 20 mph. I'm no math major, but
I do remember something like Force = Mass x Acceleration.

Maybe someone can buy some used batting cages and we can put all the combat
guys inside these nets. It would create kind of a "caged animal" vibe that
might work well and solve the insurance problem :-)

SOAR uses the same method.

And at the SOD farm flying field since the site is not permanent we
put up a flag and that is where we post our "clothes pin" channel

[RCSE] re: pushrod size

2002-06-11 Thread Lincoln Ross

we need to know size and shape of control surface and also expected
speed of plane. Also, is this pushrod straight and in line with the
load? Even at that, I'm not going to make any guesses unless it seems
similar to a plane I'm familiar with. My guess is this would be ok for
something like a Zagi.

Re: [RCSE] Safety Code

2002-06-11 Thread Lincoln Ross

I think it's really strange that this rule is coming up at the same time
that AMA is easing up on 55lb planes (see the AMA website). I think
there is no comparision of risk here. I seem to recall being hit by
foamies and slow flyers but these were all non-events. It's the hits on
people by hard airplanes that are memorable. THe details of the flying
site, parking, where people are standing, etc. are what determine safety
in slope combat. Perhaps I haven't been around the really intense
events, but it seems to me that an injury from a Zagi is a pretty far
fetched event. The only way to be completely safe from injuries is
preemptive suicide. And that's assuming one does a thorough job!

The scary events and injuries I've seen in aeromodelling involved:
propellors (very common), pilots out of control with relatively heavy,
fast airplanes, flying over people with hard airplanes (often due to
lack of awareness of where the plane is), and structural failure (a
wingless sailplane fuse falling from winch height is a very scary spear,
especially if you are close enough to hear it) . (I'm not counting the
time we had a man carrying craft dead stick onto the field during a
contest.)

I'll bet within a few years we will see soft, bounceable, pusher slow
flyers that would be perfect for combat (electric Zagis have already
been used this way). The rule will be really absurd if it bans 5 oz
planes going 10mph.

BTW, has anyone confirmed this proposal or is it a rumor? I haven't sent
out my letter yet as I don't want to cry wolf.

Mirko you really haven't expressed yourself completly about this subject. I
think you need to share your true feelings with the group. I mean has a
