Re: [RCSE] Wing to fuze joint

2002-10-29 Thread Dave Nasatir

Although I haven't seen the idea implemented, local flyers discussed the use
of small Radio Shack rare earth magnets (properly oriented) implated at the
ends of the wing rod tube (when using a steel wingrod)to hold the wings to
the fuze. Else, just put the magnets in the root rib and the fuze. They
are tiny and powerful.

Actually, James Osborn was demonstrating some extremely powerful, small,
rare earth magnets he had obtained from a cabinet maker's supply house, when
the topic came up.

Doesn't someone make a set of aluminum wing keepers that use a rubber band
passed through the fuselage, attached to a hook and cam lock on each wing?
Would this not work with the Aquila? Who makes them?

[RCSE] F3XTD at HSS So Cal.

2002-10-29 Thread Tom Copp
Hello TD Gurus,

We are holding another F3XTD contest this Sunday at the HSS field in
Costa Mesa, Ca.
Look here for more info. http://www.f3x.com/Contest/F3xtd.htm

Please have your entry card in by 8:45. No new entries will be accepted
after 9:10. Once the matrix is set the contest is closed. (Sorry but
that's the way it works). This will give me some time to set the matrix
and we should start flying by 9:30. We will fly 4 10-minute rounds and a
fly off if needed. I will try and keep the contest limited to 4 groups
max if frequencies allow. This should keep us at 1 round per hour. We
will be flying easily until 2:00 so be prepared.

RES pilots will form there own group. Please enter 1 class only as we
will possibly fly RES along with the open models to save time but you
will be scored separately as RES.

For those pilots that have flown the contest before you know the drill.
Fly, time shag. The contest can not run without your help. This format
is a bit different over the normal TD contest; you will be active all
day. Many pilots told me they had more fun because they kept busy.

As before, bring a good TD winch and battery and your entry is free! We
are looking for 4 more winches.

Keep it up,

Tom Copp

Re: [RCSE] Model Aviation Soaring Column

2002-10-29 Thread Randy Bullard
Are there really that many people doing control line? Based on the AMA's
coverage you'd get the impression that soaring is a pretty small event in
comparison (which I find hard to believe).

Here is another way to look at it. How much do soaring pilots pay for
planes, radios and supplies vs. how much do control line guys pay for planes
and supplies. I'll bet the magazine's advertisers would rather see the guys
that are more likely to buy more get more attention.

Of course my big question is how do CL guys keep from getting so dizzy that
they fall on their face?

[RCSE] The Great pumpkin Fly

2002-10-29 Thread Martin Doney
I would like to say thanks to the CSS for a great contest. If you couldn't
make this one you missed a very good time and some great flying as it was
not a gimmie to make your time.

Thanks to Capn' Jack and Karen for putting up with the crew that shows up at
the house when in Cincinnati.

It was one of the four great weekends of the year.

P.S. I think I can past the alcohol test for pilots at this time.

[RCSE] RE: Model Aviation Soaring Column

2002-10-29 Thread Mike Garton
Jim, you did a great job on the Nats coverage.
There are not too many people who can both
write well AND take good pictures.
It gave the readers a fresh perspective and
put the vacation back in my vacation. :-)

The abundance of CL in Model Aviation can be explained.
Content editor, Bob Hunt, is a hardcore CL guy.
The unbalanced space allotments bother me.
I have exchanged emails with Bob and he honestly
believes that CL is at least as popular as soaring.
From the NATS issue, you would guess that CL is
5 times more popular than soaring.

In August Bob Hunt sent a letter to the columnists
stating that column space and frequency were being
changed to better reflect their relative popularity.
The same letter said that my column would stay at
1500 words with half the frequency (changing to every
other month). Apparently the data being used is
based on which box people checked on their AMA
renewal forms.

I emailed Bob and asked for a list of the new sizes
and frequencies. Here is his response:
I do not intend to supply a list of all the
topics for which there are columns in Model Aviation
or their frequency. That will become apparent as
the new alignment is implemented.

He went on to add that Dave Garwood would now be
writing a slope soaring column on the months opposite mine.

I was initially pissed off at Bob Hunt's reply
and the change that could be considered a demotion.
Then I started to weigh the pros and cons.
In the past I had often wished that the deadlines
came half as often. It is easier to find 6 good topics
a year than 12. There is twice as much time to
research each topic. Also, I agree that Garwood's slope
stuff would be a good addition to the magazine.
Garwood goes to more slope events than I do.
On the downside, the readers get less thermal soaring coverage.
Inserting timely stuff in the thermal soaring column
would be even more difficult. Deadline to delivery lag
time was 4 months before the frequency restriction.
In the end I decided to sit tight and see how things
look after a few months.

I AM very interested to see the new space/frequency allotments.
If the other columns changed at then same time Soaring did,
we should see the results in the next issue.
Maybe the frequency of some of those CL events
will go to once a year ;-)

[RCSE] Vacation report

2002-10-29 Thread Steven Bixby
Just checking to see which list members are on vacation this week.

Just kidding!

Folks, please remember that if you set auto-response on your RCSE
list-subscribed email accounts, then every poster gets an (annoying) copy of
your auto-responder message. Most email clients can be set to not
auto-respond for certain conditions; for instance, if the email has 'RCSE'
in the subject.

Thanks!

[RCSE] Flying and friends

2002-10-29 Thread REECE

To everyone that I had
the privilege of flying with this year.
Thank you all so much    From
that Capt guy who strongly suggested that I get a real plane. To the kids
at the Nats that tried to drown me when we were suppose to be shagging chutes.
The memories of this year will not soon be forgotten. If I shook your hand and
said thank you I meant it, youve all touched me deeply and brought me
back to something that I truly love. Good friends, good food and great flying
hope to see you all next year..Reece

[RCSE] wing tape

2002-10-29 Thread d. o. darnell

Hi, Dave;
We used to use a clear tape permanently attached to the root (about 1
wide) to eliminate the covering from being pulled loose by the attaching
tape. (The attaching tape sticks down on top of the permanent tape.) For
the permanent tape we used SlickTac which was used to make decals but is
probably no longer available. However, any clear, high-tack tape (you
don't want IT to peel off) will do. I like Scotch 600, for example but
almost any will do. It's amazing how many clear tapes there are out
there! Wrap the permanent tape all the way around the root. Then during
each flying session, use 3M vinyl tape which holds well but is also easily
removable.

Hope this helps!

Regards;

D. O. Darnell
