Re: [RCSE] Does obechi on foam need a glass layer to keep from splitting off the spar ?
I got great advice on doing this, hope it helps you. I would do glass at 45 degrees, 1-2oz cloth depending on your use After cutting your obechi, lay pieces of glass overlapping so that you can squeegee from the tip to the root without lifting the glass... You glass the obechi, put some epoxy/microballoons around the edges, root and sub-ribs, and then put that onto your cores - all this in one step, I'm not implying that you let the glass dry before applying to the cores. If you're doing a spar and you have to cut thru the foam to get it in, I'd also add a long strip of 2oz cloth to catch the razor / protect your 45 degree cloth. As long as I'm on it, you might consider carbon tow on the trailing edge. Good luck, Brent
Re: [RCSE] Re: Cracked fuse, from the inside...
I've used this balloon technique for patching up a Filip T tail glass fuse and a carbon DLG pod. Get some thick round balloons that will be about 1 ft in diameter when fully inflated. The long thin hot dog balloons look like they will do the trick, but don't. They burst to easily. The large round ones will distort as you inflate them in a confined space. I kept a little compressor going for hours keeping the balloon inflated while the epoxy cured. The extra air from the compressor escaping through the open side of a T fitting with the tubing/balloon on the other side. Try out the setup prior to actually doing the patch. The challenge I found was not getting the glass/carbon to fall over on itself as I worked to get it into position down in the fuse. I resorted to lightly wetting out the patch with just a little epoxy and letting it cure so it wasn't so limp. That way I could place it with a set of forceps or rods as it had some structure/rigidity. Also found out it was better to work with some segments that overlapped than one big continuous piece. Also used mold release on the balloon but don't know if that was necessary. I think I'd give that a shot first RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Re: Re: Cracked fuse, from the inside...
I have also heard of people pouring fine sand into a fuse when they needed to use a little gentle persuasion with a heat gun to un-kink some warped glass... If the inner surface patch was layed with a plastic-wrap covering, then the sand poured in, after setting, pour the sand back out and peel off the plastic wrap, you've got it...? Re: [RCSE] flaps on a flying wing???
One of our local guys flys an eight foot Mongo (a really big Zagi) that he has put flaps on, and it works very well. He can actually hover the thing at the edge of the hill, and it comes in very slowly to land. (in a perfect world) | If they are behind the CG (like the 163) they can still be easily | compensated | because the larger elevons are farther behind and have more leverage. | On a plank wing like the JW, Zipper, Moth etc. the flaps would be elevator | input | and would have to be countered with up elevator compensation. | This would have to happen evenly and instantly or the plane would do an | outside | loop or dive into the ground. I think it would be very difficult to adjust. | I did this on one of my 8ft. deltas, there were inboard and outboard elevons | of equal length. I set them up so they could crow for landing just to see | if it would be useful. It wasn't, the delta can make a very steep approach | in a nose high, stalled configuration and the flap/crow mix had very little | effect compared to this. | | Mark Mech | www.aerofoam.com | | RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
