Perhaps the reason so many people on this list are having problems spelling is that they have been doing a lot of soldering From: "Steve B." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [RCSE] Solder fumes and carbon dust solution Date: Mon, 23 Feb 2004 10:11:55 -0800 (PST) Solder tips: 1) Avoid having face over rising smoke before it rises :) 2) Slowly exhale for each solder connection. 3) Continue exhaling as you run away. 4) Make sure to run upwind and inhale that fresh air. 5) Think about your next solder, take a deap breath and run inside. Cheap super fume hood: Take a 5 gallon bucket (bucket upgradeable at any time) upside down with a hole in the bottom. Suspend it a few inches above your solder area. Get a cheap wet dry vac ($25 or so) or go for the gas one if you want. Also get a 25 foot extension hose. Place the vac downwind, outside a window, in a tree. Wet the inner filter with soap and water to help catch fine particles, poisons, inert material, DNA altering and cancerous fumes. Use an extension cord and run it along the hose to the vac. Control the power with a power strip next to your soldering iron. If someone asks you what the goofy bucket is have them look inside. Flip on the switch to release their hands from the bucket. Tell them you are serious about fumes and that they can smoke in your garage as long as they keep their head in the bucket :) For carbon cutting perhaps the bucket could be placed on the bottom? --- Gary Marks <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I, just this evening, purchased a Weller brand Soldering kit at Lowe's. [RCSE] Scale at Wood Crafters
We now have 16 entries in the Wood Crafters Scale event. I believe this tops the number of scale entries in the Soar Nats or any other woody scale event. Hugh Stock's glass fuse with wood built up flying surfaces kits were the big thing back then, but we will be seeing mostly wood construction on some very old designs. Several of the entrants are bringing several scale planes and we will be flying scale all for four days. We have 68 overall entries in the four day WC event, 50 of them are signed up for the Wood Crafters Soar In Championships. Everyone should be glad this is happening, because much of the new blood to rc soaring will come from guys starting with a woody. I know a few BOT arf's will be with us, but haven't herd of someone coming with the Gentle Lady arf. Two of the easiest ways for newcomers to get into sailplanes. Does your club have one or more designated flight instructors the newbies can go to for help ? Ray Hayes http://www.skybench.comHome of Wood Crafters
RE: [RCSE] Fomie DS ???
To put this in context first: I normally DS at a hill much smaller then a place like Parker or Vincent...The pattern is fairly tight, and speeds of 150mph are considered fast, even for moldies (the hill record is 169mph). Anyway, a number of my friends have Blutos, JW's, Moths, etc. The JW's just don't seem to work very well in the prevailing conditions. I guess you could say they never really get "on step," even in conditions where something like a Moth is grovin' pretty good. I'm just saying it depends on where you fly. Parker, Vincent, and Blanco are all world class spots, AFAIK. I'm not trying to criticize the JW: All planes have different ranges of conditions where they work best. I'm just basing this on what I've seen at my own hill. Your milage may vary. Here here! :-) First of all, the word "grammar" is spelled "grammar." Spelling it as "grammer" kinda vitiates whatever point the poster was hoping to make. More generally, hoping to improve the grammar, spelling and usage on RCSE is another vain quest, doomed to fail like the anti-skeg movement. RE: [RCSE] ballast
Bob, There are a few ways to add ballast to a TD plane, that was not made for it. I have done all of the following on various thermal planes. 1) change to a heavier and/or longer wing joiner rod if possible 2) make a piece of lead shaped to fit inside the bottom of the fuselage. Drill a hole in it, so that it fits over towhook screw inside the fuselage. Drill another hole through the fuse and through the lead block. You can drive a screw from the bottom of the plane into this lead block to hold it solidly in. You should arrange the placement of the block so that the CG does not change. It is a pain to get that block in & out of the fuse past all the wiring. I had a Kelly clamp ( http://www.allheart.com/pm501.html ) that I used to get the lead block in place. 3) Drill additional ballast tubes in each wing a bit behind the wing joiner rod. This should be about on the CG. Use a drill only through the root rib. A drill bit will tear the foam core to shreds. Use a sharpened brass tube to cut the foam. Six inches deep should be plenty. Then glue the capped brass tube in the wing root. Insert appropriate sized lead slugs when you desire ballast. Pretty easy to get the slugs in & out. #3 was the easiest to for me to live with, after installation. Hope these thoughts give you some ideas. I, just this evening, purchased a Weller brand Soldering kit at Lowe's. The instructions, which took me almost 50 years to learn to read first, say that solder fumes are hazardous and the equipment should only be used with good ventilation. An article I read recently attributes such exposure to nerve and lung damage occurring in electronics workers. [RCSE] "Could a been a good soaring day in Atlanta.."
And it WAS! 60+ degrees, light breezes, a fully charged and tuned winch/retriever and cloud formations to soar for! I left Louisville at 8:30pm yesterday in my pickup, and got to Atlanta about 4am. Up at 9am to get some breakfast and then to the field. Winch was hot at 11am, and I took the last launch at 5:30...must have been almost 20 guys out there! Did any one see the rest of Tim Foster? If you know him, you won't recognize him cept for his voice! Somewhere since I last saw him he misplaced about 130lbs! The guy looks more like Shawn Connery than Norm from Cheers! WOW! AJ got out Mueller's latest amazing works of soaring art...the Alita and the new E-4 Xtail. There's no way to describe how far ahead of the state of the art of sailplane construction that Mueller manages. There was a Tragi 705, course my Pike Superior, Psyko Molded, Hera's, Xtail Hera, Ellipse...well a lot of nice planes. Lift was wayyy up there today, and it was spread around. Like Paul Nanton's Secrets of Thermal Soaring said, "Warm, dry days following a cold damp spell can produce phenomenol conditions for thermal soaring." (Just watched it again yesterday:-) Wish you all could have been there, Atlanta hides some of the best thumbs in the Midsouth. It was worth the drive!
