Re: [RCSE] A Formal Apology from RCSD to Mr. Man-Son-Hing

2004-05-24 Thread Dan Obermeyer
I believe that is called plagiarism. It is an appropriate gesture for the publisher
to call attention to this act, as you have done.

It is also appropriate that some aknowledgement come from the author.

While, sadly, this type of theft of intellectual property appears to be quite common,
it is never justified.

I'll chime in. I too have a Robic 707 and BTW mine keeps time just fine. :D
Mine gains nearly 1 second a day. That means mine runs about
1/(24x60x60) seconds fast, which is about 12 millionths of a second
fast. That's (10x60)/(24x60x60) seconds gain in a 10 minute event,
which is about 7/1000 seconds.
I'm not worried about it. I just find it annoying given my Radio Shack
Talking timer is the most accurate clock I own... damn thing is almost
as stable as an atomic clock; I only have to set it for daylight
savings.
I know that one can get a Seiko adjusted and certified for about a
$50 USD service fee, as they are commonly used in labs. I'm not aware
of anyone trying to certify a Robic.

Re: [RCSE] countdown stopwatch

2004-05-24 Thread Martin Usher
I got a stopwatch for $20 at the local sports store that had a proper
countdown / count through mode. They are out there but you have to look for
them. But it, too, lacks the rotray 'set' dial.

I've also got a Timex Ironman wristwatch which has numerous count and
timer modes. Its actually a small computer that can be loaded with
additional home-made applications. I had nothing much to do last Christmas
so I programmed it to be a flight timer (I also added in some code to
compute flight points). (If anyone has this watch and wants a copy of the
code they're welcome to it.)

The Robic looks amazing, I'm tempted to get one. It doesn't have that rotray
dial but that's not as useful as it looks, most task times don't appear on
the presets, you have to select '*' and set the time by pressing the
buttons.

I have no problem using an ordinary stopwatch to time tasks. The 'real' task
time is a count up value, you're only using countdown to provide seconds
indications to the pilot during the last minute. There's a lot of inherent
delay in reading a watch and calling out the time -- its at least a half
second -- so the minimal extra time involved in translating things like '55'
to '5' doesn't affect the countdown. But people are so conservative -- if
you're not using a countdown stopwatch with a setting dial on the front then
you're not timing! (BTW -- I had thought of starting the displayed countdown
in the Timex program with a half-second offset because of the timer/pilot
commuincation delay but I thought this might be regarded as cheating.)

Martin Usher

I know I have seen this tread before about a
reasonable priced countdown stopwatch but I can't find
  one (Paul)

I have a Robic 707 from Tom Copp at Composite Specialties.

[RCSE] XP3 doe sale

2004-05-24 Thread LJolly
I have a 6 servo XP3 DHLG for sale. The models was built by Craig Greening and has no
damage. The model features 4 Dymond D60 servos for Flap and ailerons and 2 Jr 241's
driving the rudder and elevator. The model comes with phone jack switch and battery
and a Hi Tech superslim RX. The model is low time and only needs new wing control rods
to be ready for flight.
Will ship but hope some one in SoCal or attending the IHLG could use the model. First
$475.00 takes it. Thanks Larry Jolly

[RCSE] Mosquitoes

2004-05-24 Thread KC

Good info for the summer.

OK, mosquitos... prepare to be repelled!
Use Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in Louisiana..just
wipe on go...Great for Babies
Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a day April through October
He said it works. He was right.
Hasn't had a mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into
trying it works on them. Vitimin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.)
If you eat bananas, the mosquitos like you, - something about the banana oil
as your body processes it.
Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitos will be much less
interested.
This is going to floor you, but one of the best insect repellents someone
found (who is in the woods every day), is Vick's Vaporub.
Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that bugs do
not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs without
using insecticides.
Tough guy Marines who spend a great deal of time camping out say that
the very best mosquito repellant you can use is Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil
mixed about half and half with alcohol.
One of the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from
the clear real vanilla. This is the pure Vanilla that is sold in Mexico.
It works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects.
When all else fails--get a frog

Yup. Before the Robic I bought another cheapy stopwatch that had the
'countdown-and-continue' mode.

I was passed on to me that as timer the stopwatch had to be able to show both
the amount of time short or long of the target time, as well as the actual
flight time. Further I had to be able show this to the scorer when turning in
the person's score card if asked. I just figured I could use my fingers and
toes, or even borrow an abacus (needed for my rotten scores!! LOL!) if asked
to say what the over or under time was.

Ah well... like I said... whatever works!

Best wishes...

(PS: I might get better if I flew more and typed less, but work and moving
make that a pipe dream for the next few months.)
