2004-12-06 Thread Richard Shagam
My first sailplane was a 2 m polyhedral floater called an EyeSoar.
Of course, by the time it completed its first 'obligatory' hand toss it
looked like one. The nose immediately got shorter by about a
quarter-inch after a newbie zoom and stall (no one to help me). But it
eventually flew great until it met an untimely death in a moving truck.

[RCSE] Sell or trade 3.5 oz. CF cloth.

2004-12-06 Thread Harley Michaelis
Guys, I find the 3.5 oz. unidirectional CF cloth with glass cross weave I
got from Phil Barnes too light for my purposes. It is very nice stuff and
yielded a really smooth finish on one bagged wing.

I got 10 linear yards from Phil for $92 with shipping which is a very good
buy. 7 yards are left. Yours for $65 including shipping.

I need 10 yards or so of 4.5 to 4.7 ounce unidirectional CF with glass cross
threads. Would buy outright or go for a trade of the 3.5 oz. plus cash.

When I had the pleasure of being stationed there courtesy of the USAF, I managed to find 35 MHz modules and matching Airtronics receivers for my Vision. I wasn't willing to fly on 72 on a non-interference basis, because I was a member of a local club, and there long(ish)-term.

Still have those modules and receivers, and if you fly a Vision or Infinity I would be glad to loan them out for your use while there.

[RCSE] FAI Speed Record for sailplane

Did the criteria or rules change for the FAI speed record? I
thought I remembered the Germans or the Swiss setting a speed record with the
Dassel in the Alps of around
200 mph (312 kph) many years ago. At the time I was pylon racing and the
sailplane was faster than our Formula Ones on 70% nitro. The Dassel was a
purpose designed speedster with mucho ballast working massive mountain lift to achieve
that kind of speed and demonstrated what a culmination of design, planning,
location and weather could produce record wise. Inquiring minds wanna know!

... or you might hit somebody. I wouldn't risk it.

I was thinking I might have an OK transmitter and receiver for Gnut to
use, that I got with a used helicopter many years ago (and I live in
Austin, so it's easy to get to him) but it's channel is 73 - 40.730
mHz, so it wouldn't be OK for an airplane in Germany. (But might be
good for a car or boat or something.)

It's a Futaba FP-T5NH Challenger. made for a helicopter -- it's got
some Japanese letters on it, so I'm guessing it's from Japan. I've
also got a receiver that goes along with it, and I *believe* it's
comparable to the standard R127DF. (Sure, it's a helicopter radio,
but it would work fine on a glider too.)

Somebody have a use for this? Perhaps somebody in Japan or Germany?
If you do, it's yours for shipping. It seems to work, though the
batteries are probably long since dead.

(Alas, it doesn't have a buddy box connector, so you can't use it for
that.)

RE: [RCSE] flying on 72 in germany ?

2004-12-06 Thread John Derstine
The best advice is perhaps to obey the regulations present in the
country you are visiting. Fly with established pilots who know the area.
We would expect visitors to this country to use our frequencies.
That said, We had some issues regarding this when we ran the Elmira
aerotows and entertained guest pilots from Germany and Switzerland. We
offered free support for JR flyers compliments of Horizon hobbies with
modules and crystal sets, we strongly suggested multiplex owners invest
in appropriate sets before coming over here. Most pilots complied, but a
few refused to give up what they considered their safe 35 Mhrz
equipment. They came armed with scanners and we agreed to let them fly
since they had traveled so far. There were two crashes involving these
pilots one year. Now we do not know what caused the crashes but we had
our suspicions. After that no more nice guys, we insisted on compliance
in following years.
When visiting Germany in 1998, I found certain pilots residing there
flying what they called Schwartz frequencies or black channels. These
were techies who used some secret military (I think) frequencies to
avoid being shot down at various slopes where there were several launch
areas and virtually no frequency control.
Not sure what the moral of this story is, but play it safe, use what is
legal where you travel. Fly only where you are sure it is safe, follow
local advice, or carry a scanner.

2004-12-06 Thread Daniel Juhlin
I was stationed at Ramstein AB, Germany in the 70s, and at the time I
believe everyone was flying on 27Mhz.. Three of us all bought blue box
Hobby Lobby radios on 72 Mhz, and had no problems until we entered a contest
where a scanner was in use. When it was our turn to fly, panic set in as
the CD couldn't locate our signal! We had to confess and were allowed to
compete, but were informed that the band was used by the Poleizi (police).
Flew with the radios for awhile, until they all went south about the same
time...(potential) problem solved. Though we never had an interference
problems, at least on our end, those were low-tech times, and a lot less
potential for conflict. I wouldn't attempt to do it now.

Re: [RCSE] FAI Speed Record for sailplane

2004-12-06 Thread Simon Van Leeuwen
The main difference between the old 393Kph record and the new 239Kph is
a course length change from 50 to 200 meters.

Since the '99 Speed Trials I have been steadily working to set a new
record. This endeavor took on a slightly different perspective when I
was invited to participate as an industry advisor to 4th year mechanical
engineering at U of Calgary, thanks to friend and fellow pilot Dave Horsley.

Essentially I get to utilize the local universities resources and brain
trust to analyze flight trajectory, airframe strength/materials, and
timing system development.

This is the 3rd year we have maintained this project, and the results
have been fascinating to say the least:

- Flight Trajectory Energy Model which incorporates modern aerodynamic
principles and physics to analyze the critical descent/pull-out stage.
This extremely powerful code looks at the vertical descent and rotation
to level flight portions in great detail to understand what flight path
will result in the least amount of energy loss.

- Airframe development; What configuration will ascend quickly, descend
as quickly as possible (reflex to zero lift and AoA), and negotiate the
200 meter course (minimizing rotational losses) AND stay in one piece to
repeat within the hour in the opposite direction.

This (probably final) year will be taking one-piece wings and subjecting
them to load testing and frequency/excursion anomalies to explore:

- Lay-ups and composite material application procedures utilizing
Laser/Doppler velocity scanner
- Non-human interventive timing systems that will meet the FAI's strict
guidelines

In turn I assist 4th mechanical engineering students understand better
(and get a taste of) what will be demanded of them out in the real world
of business.

So far, everyone involved has benefited significantly. Most will realize
that a powerless aircraft of proper proportions will fly significantly
faster than any aircraft which utilizes a powerplant to create thrust,
especially prop-driven aircraft.

To date I have aircraft that exceed 230-240Kph over the 200 meter course
consistently, and one off course pass in excess of 420Kph. On the
preferred descent path the aircraft will employ LE strobes to adequately
(barely) negotiate the first stages of the vertical descent.

Few have had the luxury of hearing a sailplane at really high speed,
let alone when one fails mechanically. Both are exhilarating...

Bruce Hobbs wrote:
Did the criteria or rules change for the FAI speed record? I thought I
remembered the Germans or the Swiss setting a speed record with the
Dassel in the Alps of around 200 mph (312 kph) many years ago. At the
time I was pylon racing and the sailplane was faster than our Formula
Ones on 70% nitro. The Dassel was a purpose designed speedster with
mucho ballast working massive mountain lift to achieve that kind of
speed and demonstrated what a culmination of design, planning, location
and weather could produce record wise. Inquiring minds wanna know!

Re: [RCSE] flying on 72 in germany ?

2004-12-06 Thread Charles Frey

What I'm not trying to do - tell anyone what to do.

What is bothering me about an underlying attitude that seems to exist -
You really can't know who is actully on that channel. And that channel
belongs to that person, he expects it to work, and he might depend on it
to work. He may have also paid decent amounts of money to get licensed
on that channel. And because your scanner didn't hear any signal, that
means there's nobody using that frequency? We know that's not true. All
I'm advocating is that we respect other people channels just as we expect
ours to be. Nobody in particular's comment made me say this, it's just
how I'd feel if I were that other guy.

Like someone said, we would expect vistors to our country to use our
frequencies.

What is the best way to charge an Optima battery? The usual 12/2

I use a 70/12/2 Amp automatic charger with deep-cycle mode. I try not
to let the battery go below 12 Volts before charging, so I only get
about 50% capacity, but batteries last longer. My Optima Yellow Top
then sucks back about 9 Amps, and is ready to go again in a few hours.
I use a small charger (1.5 Amp to 14.4 Volts) that floats at 13.2 Volts
to maintain the charge over longer periods (like winter).
You _MUST_ have a charger that never exceeds the max voltage rating
of the Optima (15.1 Volts) or it can vent and then it is trash. Many
chargers will do this, so do some research before buying.

Just read through the entry pack, which mentions J instead of B for the F3 thing on the special noticies page. It says 4 entries per freq which is consistant with F3J but the front entry page says one per freq. as in F3B.

Also it would appear we can send entry forms imediately as there is nothing indicating a start date for entries.

Looks like Lonnie still has some work to do so patience is required.

I don't know about Northern California but here in LoCal the only foam you
can get is thin, 1 or so. I've seen white and blue.

(We just don't get the winters, you see -- no need for massive layers of
insulation.)

I'd be interested in hearing about foam sources, I'd like to get some to
start cutting. Its probably available from builder's merchants, suppliers
to the trade, rather than the big-box home stores.
