Re: [RCSE] canopy tinting
Sounds like you tried Ritt dye and had problems? I've heard some people mist the inside of the canopy with spray paint but I can't imagine that it would come out even. -Ben Don Lisa Copley wrote: Anybody have a way to tint your canopy w/o warping the plastic? Re: [RCSE] canopy tinting
I used the Ritt Dye method, water was quite hot, canopy was cooking for a long time as I wanted it a smoked effect and it turned out great though not quite as dark as I wanted. No hint of warping. Re: [RCSE] canopy tinting
The RC car folks use a Pactra spray designed to tint and not cover as a plus it is formulated for plastic. 6 or 8 colors too. With 1 or 3 light coats it comes out great. http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?I=LXCY44P=ML Don Lisa Copley wrote: Anybody have a way to tint your canopy w/o warping the plastic? Re: [RCSE] canopy tinting
Don, You asked: Anybody have a way to tint your canopy w/o warping the plastic? RIT dye works fine. The first time I used the dye, I had the water too hot and warped the plastic. The second time, I used a scrap piece of plastic for testing. With a thermometer in the water, I kept raising the temperature and sticking in the test piece. In this way, I got an estimate of the temperature at which the plastic started to warp. When I tinted the canopy, I kept the temperature below the warping temperature and everything came out fine. Periodically, I took the canopy out of the dye solution to judge the amounting of tinting. When it looked right to me, I stopped the tinting process. [RCSE] invitation - DESS hand launch practice contest
We decided to get a little more serious about hand launch in our club since we have had a required critical mass of HLG diehards for a while now (about 4-5 pilots). So we planned 2 practice contests this spring to warm-up for the new season and be ready when the real competitions start. We will have the first public contest next weekend, March 19, Saturday. The plan is to just have a 1-day mini-contest with as many rounds as we can run from about 9-10am till 4-6pm. I know this is kinda a late notice, but if you live relatively close to North Carolina, please consider coming to our practice contest. I know there are a lot of new HLG pilots om the East Coast that are just keeping quiet, South Carolina, Virgina, North Carolina. Please speak up and see if you can drive down here for 1 day. We can do some sort of a clinic or seminar for beginners where everybody gets to ask questions and complain about how he can't launch well and can't thermal well, and we all listen, knod our heads in agreement and try to find the answers to the questions or just tell the person to go and practice more :-) Kidding. Seriously, if you have never been to a HLG contest, this is your chance to learn about it in a friendly atmosphere. We expect at least 2 people from Charlotte, NC, and a few non-regular semi-local guys at the contest. Right now we are hoping to have about 8-10 people. Phil Barnes himself and Dr. Denny Maize promised me that they might also come to meet the old friends and practice with us, if not for this contest, than maybe for the next one in April. The second warm-up contest is planned for April 16, Saturday. If there is enough interest, we can possibly make it a 2 day event. Send me an e-mail if you are interested in coming. Directions to the field can be found on our last year's official contest page http://olgol.com/contest. Thermals, Oleg. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] System Three clear Coat Epoxy
Well, I've used it for clear coat, and it works as promised for that, but it doesn't necessarily make sense to me to use it as a laminating epoxy for structural composite work. It is watery enough to be potentially even thinner than you really want, like thin enough to actually cause problems. And since it's meant for use as a topcoat, I'm not sure it's formulated with pure structural strength as a top priority. Fiber penetration would be great initially, but I almost wonder if enough resin would remain under vac to do the skin bonding work, etc. On the other hand, I think it's very much worth a test run with the stuff on an un-needed wing segment. I'd do that with ANY new epoxy just to get the lay of the land.
