[RCSE] Tullahoma report
Yep, Chuck's new channel checkin gadget works as advertised. Even when I tried to fool him by doing my idgit glider pilot imitation. Looks like a great toy for the price. Sounds like Gordy would have had more fun at Tullahoma than the F3J gig. We had beeeyoootiful!! weather and great air. Standard laid back Tullahoma contest, with a lot of great folks I've known for a long time. Tullahoma had the first glider contest that I attended, back in 1971. They are still doing it, something must be right. There were a couple patches of sink, but for the most part everybody got their times and landing scores picked who won a trophy. Back for more today. happy trails - Rob Glover I used the Channel Checker to verify the channel number of all transmitters at the Airfoilers 35th Annual Sailplane contest. All checked OK with two exceptions. I noted that one transmitter illuminated several diodes when the antenna was almost touching the Channel Checker. The transmitter checked good when the antenna was moved a foot away. Not all transmitters affected the Channel Checker this way. Made me wonder if that was swamping or was the transmitter that illuminated more than one diode at close range was splattering a little. Something I want to investigate if I run into it again while not rushed by trying to get a contest under way. Bubba brought his transmitter over to be checked with the Channel 12 pin clipped to the antenna. Channel Checker showed that the transmitter was on Channel 58. I ask Bubba if this was one of those dial-a-crash transmitters. He said this was a crystal controlled transmitter and pulled the RF module to show me. On the inside was a channel 58 label. Bubba was having a little fun. Incidentally this was the Bubba of BubbaDancer fame also known as Rob Glover. Chuck Anderson PS. Bubba also had the Channel 58 pin when he brought his transmitter over to be checked. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. RE: [RCSE] 3 days at Woodcrafters
Scale is growing by leaps and bounds, wood, glass and in between, let's not disparage, or infer a value judgment one over the other,(not saying you intended that as such Jim). We all have something to gain from a shared interest in scale soaring. Take those woodies to the JR Aerotow next weekend and show them off, it is what it's all about. Mix it up. Tom Augustine who died this past month will most likely have several of his 40% wood crafted beauties at JR. in the hands of Dan Troxell, and Mike Lance. These are on the scene in California and around the aerotow circuit in California, and would put any wood built scale ship to shame, likewise Eric Eiche, from British Columbia always attended the Elmira aerotows with his truly museum scale specimens. We all tend to compartmentalize our interests, let's not start being exclusive, intentionally or by unintended inference. Cheers. [RCSE] F3J is not for me...or my Pikes :-(
Well flew my first F3J event and it was in Denver with Skip Miller. We had school kids paid to tow, and they were weak, giving me launches 30m less altitude I had wing connector problem on one launch disconnecting the aileron and that caused a double pop offzero. On another flight I was skied out another pilot came overand wemid airedhard, I got it down but it hit a fence pole and destroyed the wing. Today I did a test launch to get the new kids towing some experience. When I dove to get off the line they stopped towing and I over rotated some, the line wrapped around my vertical and sawed it off right at the stab pivot, and both popped off, and destroyed the entire plane. Tower cost $200 for the weekend, motel and rental car expense approx $800, two Pikes approx $1,100 and the flight out $450. F3J in the Rockies cost me pretty close to $4,000. Figure I got 4 actual flights in counting the practice flight...you do the math, I'm gonna be a little sick :-)Star Wars was great the other day though! Gordy

[RCSE] Hobbico Freq Checker Range Test
Today I had a chance to test out the range on a clubmate's Hobbico Frequency checker. I also had my GPS receiver, Ed Wilson's ICOM handheld scanner and a pair of earphones for the Freq checker's antenna. The earphones were approximately 5.5 feet in length. I set a man overboard point on my GPS at our landing tape and then walked out 150 feet. At 150 feet, the freq checker registered all three radios (30, 32 and 34) with and WITHOUT the antenna. At approximately 200 feet without the antenna is where I first noticed the frequency checker not picking up at least one of the radios. At 300 feet without the antenna, it would not reliably detect all three radios. I say reliably because I adjusted how I held the frequency checker, and that varied how well it would pick up the radios. However, with the earphone-antenna plugged in, it would reliably pick up the radios. At 450 feet without the antenna it became even more unreliable, only occassionally picking up one of the radios (if at all). With the antenna, however, it did just fine. At .15 miles (800 feet), I decided to test out antenna orientation. Previously, I just had the antenna draped over my shoulder, so to test worst-case, I laid the frequency checker on the ground with the antenna stretched out on the ground. It did not pick up all radios reliably. Then I picked up the end of the antenna and held it above my head. The frequency checker began reliably detecting all radios. Finally, I walked out to .25 miles (1,320 feet), and with the antenna properly oriented, I was able to reliably detect all the radios. I then walked in an arc to maintain the .25m distance, with the antenna draped over my shoulder. All radios still detected. I couldn't go any further, though I believe that it would have certainly detected it well past .25 miles. So, the 210-270 foot range that the Hobbico rep stated each unit was tested as I believe to be accurate. However, why the unit doesn't ship with the antenna is a bit of a mystery to me. I could certainly see it causing the frequency checker to show false-posistives RF-polluted areas, but I believe the extended range to be a greater benefit. The benefits at contests and flying fields are obvious enough, but I think that with it's considerable range it would be great for park- and neighborhood-fliers. In summation -- if you want to be able to hear further than 200 feet, get an old pair of earphones and plug them into the Hobbico Frequency checker. Also, make sure that the antenna is oriented vertically. PS: one thing to note is that if you do get a radio too close to a freq checkker, it will get swamped and many, many channels will light up. Re: [RCSE] Hobbico Freq Checker Range Test
Ben Wilson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Today I had a chance to test out the range on a clubmate's Hobbico Frequency checker. Thanks for the report. Unfortunately mine is consistently giving all sorts of false indications no matter where I take it. It even shows channels in use at night, inside a microwave oven with the door closed! It seems to especially favor the lower channels such as 14 through 17. At the field yesterday I had a chance to watch it and an RC Scan 7200 at the same time, separated by several feet to prevent any cross-interference. With no antenna, the Hobbico unit indicated several phantom signals that the RC Scan 7200 didn't show, even with the RC Scan 7200's antenna extended and the switch set to the most sensitive setting. The Hobbico unit did, however, reliably show all of the channels that actually were in use at the field. I guess I'll have to send mine back. From the reports I've read, I gather that the Hobbico Frequency Checkers do generally work well, so I think I can look forward to getting a good replacement or repair from Tower Hobbies. Incredibly poor luck Gordy. I want to go on record to say that you are a true sportsman and competitor. Gordy took time out during the carnage to assist me in getting my Artemis KC back in action. I use Volz servos in this 7 year old model and to date have never stripped a gear or had a Volz servo failure. Thanks Gordy for your assistance during a contest that did not have the probability curves working for you. Tom Gressman/RMSA/Denver

[RCSE] F3J in the Rockies Results
The results are in and Gordy had a terrible spate of bad luck. The good news is that there was only one other plane totaled (Rich OConnell on launch) and a couple of planes with minor damage. While the air was challenging on Sat, today brought overcast skies, cool (55 degree) temps and much more difficult air. The blood was flowing in nearly every round. Rich Burnoski flew a great final day and improved his standing from 7th to second. Skip Miller continued to dominate with his excellent flights in horrid conditions. While only Skip, Rich and Lenny Keer managed to make it through the finals without one zero round, Skip was clearly the master, with only one minor hit and 3 1000 rounds! Attrition was severe as participants dropped out of the finals for various reasons. Lots of zero rounds were recorded as the lift carried everyone wy downwind and with terrible sink on the way back. While there were a lot OUT landings, there were no damaged planes. Congratulations to Skip, Rich and Lenny who showed what difficult condition soaring is all about! [RCSE] Retro Moldy
So I was rummaging around the shop the other night, and pulled out my old Calypso Cobra Lite. What a beautiful model, I could never bring myself to selling it. So I cycled the batteries, and checked everything out... I even brought it out to the field on Sat. but I only ended up flying a piped up ICON because I was having such a good time with it. I think I will give it a try tomorrow at Hampshire, I used to really like this model before I started flying the ICON. Nothing against my woobie the ICON, I just need to go fly this model again and see it fly. 8-) Jim Downers Grove, IL Member of the Chicago SOAR club, and Team JR AMA 592537LSF 7560 Level IV R/C Soaring blog at www.jimbacus.net RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Gordy - F3whatever can be frustrating and expensive. They are great events, but you really need to be ...committed. Sorry to hear that you had a less that optimal event. OTOH, we all had a great time in Tullahoma flying RES and Unl in flat air with Chuckie, Kendall, Flyin Brian, Herbie, the Clevelands, the Hotlanta guys, and a cast of thousands (or at least several). It's not every day I get to share air with Royce Salmon, and I cherish the opportunity. The best part of soaring competition is that guys who are seasoned still show up and give us the pleasure of their company. Include guys like Ron Swinehart, Russ Behr, Rex Powell, it's just too good to miss. My thrill for the day was when Martha let me drive her Mercedes SLK AMG. 0-60 in under 4 seconds, and great comfort is a hoot. Very tight and flat in the corners, well polished. She got the car that she deserves. Chuckie still hasn't let me drive his old 'Vette, so I'm gonna have to keep going back for more. happy trails - Rob Glover RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News.
