I got tired of paying over $2 for 2 rare earth magnets at Rat Shack. I
found a place where I could buy them much cheaper and the ones I have are
better in 3 respects, first, they are chrome plated, and second, they are
a
little larger but the same thickness. And finally, they are only a
quarter

each. Size is 6mm dia. x 1.5mm thick, or roughly 1/4" dia x 1/16".

I have them in sets of 40 for $10 which includes shipping. I've sold over
1000 of them on the electric board of RCG and I thought the glider guys
might want to hear about them too. They are great for holding on
canopies,

keeping tool box drawers closed, keeping hatches attached etc. They have
tons of uses.

Please send $10 via Paypal to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I will take a check but I
prefer Paypal. gv

[RCSE] soaring weather question

2005-07-12 Thread Michal Sabala
Hello,

Thank you to those who replied about my subscribe questions. In the end
Lex added me to the list.

I'm looking for articles about determining or forecasting good soaring
weather. I'm a beginning glider pilot (and experienced power) but I have
a number of 30min+ flights under my belt.

I live in a city and can't verify that there are good thermal conditions
based on hawks (there aren't any), wind shifts (tall buildings), etc.
How can one tell that there is an inversion? Are certain air pressure
trends and day/night temperature or humidity patterns indicative of an
inversion?

I would like to be able with fair certainty to determine if sufficient
soaring conditions exist before driving out of the city. I'm in Chicago
BTW.

Thanks,

Michal

Re: [RCSE] soaring weather question

2005-07-12 Thread Pat McCleave
Michal,

First and foremost you need to hook up with the great guys of the SOAR Club
there in Chicago. I am sure someone from that group will be contacting you
anyway. As for a good rule of thumb on what makes a good thermal day, look for
days that have a large differential between the overnite low temperature and
the forecast high temperature for the day you are planning to go out. Any day
there is going to be a 20-30 deg differential, you should see some good
activity. Another good old standby is to look to the sky, if you see the white
puffy cumulus clouds forming, there will be thermals that are generating them.
Lower wind days are better for working the thermals but there can be some
really nice lift out there even on the windiest of days as well. Hope this
info has been of some help.

See Ya,

Pat McCleave

[RCSE] I need a few micro receivers. What's the current favorites?

2005-07-12 Thread Doug McLaren
I've got a few planes I've been putting together, and it looks like I
need a few more micro receivers. I don't feel like stripping some
existing planes, so it's time to buy something new.

What's the current favorite micro receivers? I've got a few FMA M5s
and I'm very happy with them. I've got some Berg-5*DSP II receivers,
and they work fine as well, though I'm a bit wary how they're not
supposed to work with Futaba synthesized modules. I've got some GWS
4Ps, and while these are OK for small close-in planes, I want
something that I can put in a plane I intend to speck out.

The Berg Microstamp 4, especially the one that is completely encased
in plastic --

   http://www.castlecreations.com/products/accessories/berg-ms4.html

looks especially promising, especially at $40. But it's not available
yet.

The number of channels doesn't really matter so much . More is
better, of course, but I can shuffle some receivers around if I get
something that doesn't have enough channels.

The size isn't so important either. I'm looking to put these into
planes that aren't itty bitty -- like a Great Planes Fling DLG -- but
smaller is better, but I'm also looking for something good.

So, the things I'm looking at right now are :

   FMA M5 = 5 channel, 9 grams. $55 total.
   Polk Seeker Micro RX 6 = 6 channels, 14 grams. $60 total.
   Plantraco DSP4 = 4 channels, 5 grams, $35 total.

I'd like to list some of the Berg receivers in my list, but from what
I can see, there's _nothing_ available right now. Anybody aware of
somebody that has them in stock?

I'd like to put the Sombra Labs Shadow 1 onto my list, as it does 50,
72 and 75 mHz and is synthesized. But they won't be making any more
until the end of the year. The Shadow 3 would be nice as well, though
it's limited to just one band, but nobody seems to have them in stock.

Is the Plantraco DSP4 really full range?

I'm really amazed at how small my list is. I thought there was more
out there.

Right now, I'm leaning towards the Polk Hobbies Seeker 6. I don't
need it to be synthesized, but it would be nice. Is there anything
else I should be considering, or some reason I shouldn't be
considering what I'm considering?

Re: [RCSE] soaring weather question

2005-07-12 Thread Jeff Steifel

I think Pat answered the question as well as can be answered.

I would like to say that to advance as a pilot you need to go out on
days where there aren't alot of thermals...

and nights where it is changing to bouyant air.
Why??? because you will learn more about your plane and how to just eak
out a turn without stalling, and work light stuff. you will learn to
recognize air pushing you away from it.
you will learn that certain tactics (hint ) work better at this hour
than at others.
And it can be a good time. Hopefully you will find some friends who like
this time of day as I did when I was starting out.

Some of those 3-5 minute flights can be more rewarding than the 30...

I got bitten by the bug big time from those nights

I went out on windy days and low lift days ... just to get some stick
time It's all good.

Re: [RCSE] I need a few micro receivers. What's the current favorites?

2005-07-12 Thread Jack Iafret
I have been using the Shadow 3 since Toledo in an electric sailplane
and have had zero problems. It is solid OOS (almost OOS) and with
transmitters only one channel away. Probably have 60 or so powerup's
on it to date.

We have had one faulty NIB and replaced that with a new one which is
working well. I think we have about six or eight others in the club
and I have had no complaints so far on those.

I hope to have a bunch to sell soon (I hope a week or less). Sombra is
almost there for high volume production.

I don't know which shift you are looking for but to me the JR 610 UL
is a real winner.

6 channel, only 7 grams, end pins and really small.

It has been working on my hand launch for months without any
perceivable problem.
See it here

I got mine from Johnny Berlin. He had the best price around and I
ordered it along a JR base loaded antenna on a Friday and thought he
was kidding once he said I would get it the next day. Saturday the
standard shipping package was at my door. I still don't know how he
did it but I guess he asked Butch to deliver it ; )

[RCSE] Re: Soaring V1 #5988

2005-07-12 Thread Dave Register
I'd like to hold out for the Sombra 4 channel also but, as you
indicated, it's not gonna be here for awhile. However, my understanding
is the 7 channel is having a production run and may be available
shortly. Mine are giving me very good service. We've hit the hot weather
in OK and the ones I recently received from Barry are holding up well.
Just used one as my backup in a large DLG contest and had no problems.

At 8 grams with 7 channel (selectable) pinouts, fail safe and frequency
synthesis, it's a nice piece of work. I've got several M5s and Hitec SS
Rxs as well as my Futaba 128s. No Bergs as I just don't trust single
conversion no matter what. The Polk Seeker looks very good but I have no
personal experinece. The Sombra has about twice the test range (no Tx
antenna) of any of my other recivers. I still use them all but am using
the Sombras more as additional experience validates their performance.

[RCSE] Micro Rcvrs

2005-07-12 Thread LCooper428

Doug, nice post. I think the critical issue for micro receivers
(rcvrs), after weight and size considerations, is the issue of single vs. double
conversion. It sounded like it was inherent in your comments. As you
probably know, a single conversion rcvr is very limited in its range (heavy
on the very). Until this year, double conversion carried a weight burden (hee
hee). Now we have some good, light ones.

I'm flying my GP Fling with a single conversion GWS GWR-4P (4 channel
Pico type rcvr and Pico std. servos). Now that range is a
concern, I've been considering converting to a FMA M5. Based on your
comments I've decided, that is a good way to go. Thank you for your
comments.

BTW the GP Fling is GP's best effort to date (I have a Spirit
Elite and have built many of their woodies.)  It is more than $99 worth of
flying machine. As an old scratch builder, I am very impressed with their
design, materials used and their excellent instructions. I even learned a good
trick or two from their instructions. Not bad for an old guy who thought he knew
it all.

Re: [RCSE] soaring weather question

2005-07-12 Thread Steve Meyer

Michael, Pat described it well.

I as well have to be sure I pick the good days for soaring. With a commute
of over an hour I want to be sure the drive is worth it.

In the Chicago area the weather can be quite different depending on where
you are at. Closer to the lake there tends to be less lift due to lake
cooling effect. A good indicator as mentioned by Pat are the cumulus
clouds. Watch how they break up as they get closer to the lake. Sometimes
many miles west. But that does not necessarily mean lift is not present.

SOAR flies at mainly at two locations Plainfield and Hampshire. A good
distance from Chicago, the lake does not have any effect there. I have
left the field with 90+ degree weather to arrive home with mid 70's
temp. And rain is a whole different story...

One of the private weather stations I look at that is close to Hampshire,

BTW.

Thanks,

Michal

I fly just a few miles from Lake Michigan and I get cool stable
that I have to fly in 90% of the time, not much for lift.

I can look just a couple miles further inland from me a see the

It was, and it wasn't. The GWS 4P is a single conversion receiver
with limited range. It's not too bad, and really cheap, but I'm
looking for something better.

The Berg receivers, and the JR receivers are single conversion as
well, but they don't have limited range, and are as good as the dual
conversion receivers out there.

(Most JR receivers are single conversion, if that's not obvious.)

However, outside of JR and Berg, the other single conversion receivers
seem to be as you said -- limited range, and they often having
problems with signals on adjacent channels.

We've had them longer than just this year. I got my first FMA M5 over
two years ago, and I've found the FMA eXtreme5 mentioned on Usenet as
far back as 08/2001. The M5 is only 9 grams, and the eXtreme5 was
just a few more.

I haven't built mine yet, but it certainly looks good. I always
thought getting a DLG was going to cost me a lot, but the Flight DLG
looked very good at $100.

Note that there's two GP Flings -- one for DLG and one not for DLG. I
haven't seen the non DLG version, but from the pictures they are very
different.

I have a Genie LT/S that I can't wait to get in the air to see how it does.
Unfortunately I haven't had time to get it set up and trimmed but I will make
the effort in time for the Nats. I'm sure in competent hands it would give
anything out there a go for the money! (in TD, anyway!)
I am impressed with the integrity of the RDS system set up. Very tight and
positive control motion.
Anyone with the time to build should look into this design. I have a 50%
complete Big Genie with such little building time I hope to have a couple
ships in the house ready for next season.
See you in Muncie!

Berg receivers have been taken over by Castle
Creations.  The original production was done in Eastern Europe.  There
were some quality problems that will be addressed by Castle.  Castle is
also redesigning and downsizing some of the receivers.  They are quite
behind schedule at the moment but once they catch up I am confident that the
quality will be on par with other Castle products.

[RCSE] Wanted: Right wing panel for Stratos or equiv

2005-07-12 Thread Tom Rust
I guess there is only so far you can move the CG back - I had mounted my
old Sony dig cam, video xmtr, and a battery pack on the wing of my
e-Stratos. FLown it several days before, and had a problem with the
brushless - seems to have demagnetized, but I can't figure out why -
it'd flown many times before just fine. SO I replaced the motor,
apparently with a somewhat lighter one. I also added another cell to the
xmtr bat pack, which also moved the CG back a tiny bit. All together
enuf to make it totally unstable. SOme nifty video of the wing upside
down just after launch. Landed on the right wing panel in some weeds -
everything else is just fine, but the wing panels pretty crunched. Must
remember to check CG - even when it seems like a minor change.

Castle Creations purchased Berg and is going to be

the circuit board, the board is actually integrated fully within the mold

[RCSE] Not likely CG...likely wing loading.

2005-07-12 Thread GordySoar

While its possible that you got the CG back some, unless
it was 50% back, it was more likely wing loading that cause the problem. Without
a bunch of airspeed, the extra weight made the load unbearable, so the ship
rolled over and gave up.

In any case sorry to hear about the damage. I'll check
around to see if someone has some parts. Are you sure you can't repair what you
got? You'd be surprised at how easy moldies are to repair well.  Just takes
some patience to fit the pussle parts back in place.
