Following three weeks of slooow assembly, Supra
#42 (carbon) was launched today. The weather at Poway was perfect with
light winds, light thermals and lots of sun. No rain this year so there
is no grass, just brown stubble that generates thermals from about 0900 until
  sunset.

My Supra is a carbon model with a beautiful dark
orange fuse and white and orange wings. Assembly took a little longer
than I expected mainly due to my desire to put the pushrods inside
thefuse and boom. The fuse is tight quarters with the ballast tube
installed. Details of the pushrod installation are available from me off
  line.

The Airtronics 94761Z digital servos are a
perfect fit in the wing and fuse. I used the supplied hardware to
connect servos to flight controls and covered the servos with the supplied
covers. Thanks to Barry Kennedy and Larry Jolly for providing me with
pictures and suggestions about making the installation and setup.

'ole #42 was almost perfectly trimmed and flew
nearly the length of the field with the first hand launch. The first
winch launch was equally nice with a steep climb without the application of a
launch mode. I used the 5? degree tip joiners for increased stability
during launch and thermalling at long range with my ancient eyes. All up
weight was 68 ounces including 3.5 ounces of nose lead and the CG was set at
  64 mm.

After the joy of the first successful launch
waned, I noticed that Supra was still at about winch height although not
encountering any thermals. A quick trip around the field, down in the
valley and way upwind did not produce a thermal encounter, but did produce a
5+ minute flight. The model has great L/D and good speed range. It
will go fast and it will slow down for min sink or thermaling.

A quick dive test and inverted flight showed a
nose heavy condition so .5 ounces were removed for the next flight.
Again the dive test and inverted still showed a nose heavy condition so
another .5 ounces were removed. Now it was right for my style of
flying. It will pull out of a dive test in 4-500 feet and flies inverted
  with little elevator.

A few adjustments were needed for the elevator
compensation in landing mode, but it isn't quite there yet. However
landings are easily controlled as the model will slow to a walk even without a
head wind. The large rudder provides good control for those last minute
  "jinks" for the tape.

The Supra is a well designed, beautifully
constructed thermal duration model. It is very stable on launch and in
flight with no bad habits that I could see on these first flights.
Judging from the winch launch results, the carbon wing should be strong enough
for F3J (I will test it this weekend in Phoenix).

Thanks again to Airtronics, Barry Kennedy and
Larry Jolly for their help with this project.

Hi Tom,

A lot of guys don't realize that Don's has 'invert-lexia'...a rare
condition where his 9's end up flipped upside down when posting about Supra
balance points.

And speaking of rare conditionsthe Supra balance point has been a topic
since the day it first hit our skies. It has a 10.5" root yet guys seem to
be finding that the balance point is only about 37% of root chord, completely
different than our usual 45% or 48% that we have seen on virtually all other
popular contest soaring ships.

Since it is a topic of interest to me, I asked the Dr D himself (and others
who know a few things about balancing and flying contest ships) and found that
the difference is due to the Supra being..different.

Not only is it different looking but its wing plan form does not have the
sweep of other popular ships today So the balance point is more
forward.

While there are likely really good scientific reasons for the balance point
to be set some where for most of us flying, the real reason to have weight more
toward the nose than the tail is so that our sailplanes 'fall' forward. If we
balance them so that they fall backwards, we have a problem, since most of us
seldom practice controlling model sailplanes that direction. :-)

Course one dot more nose weight that is needed to make them fall forward,
then they will fall forward and nose down...which gets us in to that ugly
situation of needing airspeed sensitive elevator up trim settings.

The Supra is extra fun because even with so few flying, we have guys
interested infinding their Supra's balancein the air
instead of with a ruler.

Somefeel that the Supra is just the 'flavor' of the month, but in
fact it isn't even ice cream.
Tip to tip, nose to tail, its different.
Winner or loser it is causing some of the most fun we've had about a
new sailplane since the AVA. Thanks Dr D, Barry,Vladimir, and of course
Tom Kiesling :-)
It's 'magic' evolution will make a fun article
:-)Gordy

Seems to me that there should be a new Supra Class. Based on
everything I've read about this plane it just is not fair for it to
compete against the current stock of obsolete designs. I mean, what
chance does an Icon or Sharon stand against this new design?? Very
demoralizing to have to suffer simply because you did not get on the
band wagon fast enough. This could be the end of thermal duration
competition as we know it!!

If I were to buy any 2m right now it would be the Image, that is a fun
model to fly. I really like mine, it's the first 2m that fits my flying style.

As far as the ICON goes, I have two Lites that are proven contest machines
and a new TD one that is almost already built. Don't worry, they will
still fly and contest very strongly. People aren't talking about them
because they aren't new, but I don't see many used ones up for sale either.

And I have the new Supra as well, it is almost already built and I am
looking forward to learning to fly it and contesting.

Nothing wrong with having a quiver of American designed planes to choose
from. ;-)

P.S. I am also looking forward to trying my flying bud TK's new Insanity,
another American design.

It's all good!

[RCSE] Isthmus Models News

2006-02-06 Thread Mark Miller
Folks,

I wanted to give you all an update on our adoption. We
were supposed to leave today but were called on Friday
and told to postpone until more news arrived today.
After talking to our agency they said that our
appointment for this Thursday has been changed to
March due to rescheduling at the National Adoption
Center in Ukraine.

Because of the birth of our domestic adoption child in
early April the March date will not work for us. The
earliest we can possibly travel is November if at all.
As you can imagine this is devastating news for my
wife and me. We will continue to look forward to the
birth of our daughter in Florida.

So...Isthmus Models is back open.

Mark Miller

It will be a while before any particular airframe catches up to the Icon...

As far as the ICON goes, I have two Lites that are proven contest
machines and a new TD one that is almost already built. Don't worry,
they will still fly and contest very strongly. People aren't talking

Hi Guys,

I spoke to Barry the other day... he said something
about having shipped over 60 Supras so far... so if 67
have been shipped... I'm assuming the best I'll be
able to pull off is 68th place... but I'll be there...
and I'll keep swingin'.. if I can knock just one
off... I'll be happy...

Ok...ok I want you guys to know what a giver I
am... I actually went to the hobby store... bought
some wood to make a down and dirty mold to mold some
lead ballast for my Insanity at Phx... just so it
won't blow for you guys... if I have ballast... it
won't blow... you guys owe me... and since Supras
penetrate 100 kt wind at 28 ounces with little to no
loss in altitude... and go up on gerbel farts when
balanced at 92.5 cm

I LOVE having a target... ;-)

My Insanity and I will be in Phoenix... bring your
singles...

In the immortal words of Al Bundy... Let's Rock.

[RCSE] Re: Broken Graupner plastic part

2006-02-06 Thread MSu1049321
This may not help, but there is a kit of plastic sailplane control parts sold by Hobby-Lobby. Most of the parts are things like belcranks for full-flying stabs, but mayhap there is something in there that can be adapted. Since they import graupner models, you might also want to call them and ask if they can special order a couple of these specific parts for you.

Failing that, You could probably make a working replacement from glass cloth and carbon fiber and some epoxy. Another way to go is glue the snapped part back together with CA and then make a mold of it using one of those resin casting kits in the craft store. Then you could pull extras and maybe make back the cost of the molding kit replacing a few for friends that also broke this part:-)

Karlton Spindle... Where have I heard that name before?

Oh yes! Royal Multiplex! I bought a 'new' Multiplex vario w/ Hoopes TE
probe from them; it was over a month and a half before I received it,
every time I called about it Karlton was at a race no-one knew
anything about it, and when I finally received it, the manual, receiver
crystal and ear phone were missing. (No frequency marked on the TX
crystal, so no clue as to the frequency. No help from Multiplex,
either, since it had been discontinued.) After Royal crashed burned,
and after using every method to track down the Spindles for another
several months, his wife finally managed to send the manual. I finally
sold it for half what I paid, to a fellow modeler who took the chance
that he could find the correct receiver crystal. Most RC sellers
distributors give very good service, but my experience with Royal was
awful. I hear I wasn't alone. :-(

[RCSE] Fuse Wanted for 3-meter project

2006-02-06 Thread marcust65
Hey Guys . . .

Weird request here . . . I'm looking for a fuse for a 3 meter, 3 piece wing . .
. needs to be F3B/F3F strength and in decent condition . . . cosmetics aren't
real important, but it does need to be structurally sound and straight . . .
could be x or v tail . . .

I need to test a new wing quickly and don't have time to do a new fuse or
modify one of my 2-piece wing fuses.

Anything out there might work, something new like a Pike or Stratos, or even
something old, like a V-ultra or the like.

Can send details and/or photos direct to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
