Many thanks to George, and his dear wife, for putting up with us talking
soaring. We went back to the hotel after dinner and I showed him some videos
that were around the web on full size soaring. Really good time by all.
Goerge is a great host, just wished he was able to get out more and fly with us.

Marc

I promise, no Supra was harmed by the removal of weight while we ate dinner.

[RCSE] Re: Supra flies and antenna

2006-02-18 Thread Lincoln Ross
I wish I had a graphics program I actually knew, installed in this
computer. Oh well. The possibilities

Ahem, to be more relevant but perhaps still silly, I wonder if anyone
has tried using the tailboom for an antenna? How about the wing spar for
the ground, i.e. negative, power wire? For reference, for another
project I measured a carbon tow at 25ohms/ft. Not sure which type. Not
sure how many tows in one of those spars.

Seems to me those dedicated wires are just extra insulation. For that
matter, you could drop the insulation on the negative wire. One could
use one big wire, as someone else mentioned. And a little wire for the
signal. If you're worried about reliability, one big wire makes it
easier to have redundant pins. If you use double pins for every
function, that's 12 pins per wing. One big connector, perhaps? Also, if
you're worried about reliablility, make sure you use very careful strain
relief. Probably using really fine stranded wire would help with the
reliability as well, but I don't know where to get it, particularly on a
budget.

RE: [RCSE] pink sailplanes, tailbooms

It appears to be a mold release issue, as on the latest one I wrapped
the mandrel in very thin polyethylene sheet and the boom came off very
easily. I'll bet that if I used Frekote or something, I'd be ok.

Thanks for the offer but Mark Mech has already sent me a set of

great for getting information in a hurry. I would still like to
know why coordinates for the AG 35 series of airfoils are referenced

[RCSE] Supra 'ole #42 rear wing hold down

2006-02-18 Thread Hilaunch

Yesterday, the test plan called for flying with
ballast.  Before the ballast was actually loaded, a few "normal" flights
were conducted as a warm up to ensure that everything was working
correctly.  Following the third landing, I noticed the training edge of the
wing move vertically when I picked the model from the ground.  Close
inspection showed that the rear of the CF cap on the pylon had separated from
the pylon.  The rear hold down nut is fastened to the carbon cap so the
wing was free to move vertically.  Last evening I opened the gap with a
screwdriver and applied a generous amount of slow curing epoxy to bond the cap
to the pylon. Today's flight should prove the effectiveness of the
repair.

As most of you know this model has already seen
some hard use.  Several hard landings and a fall from the power lines at
Phoenix.  Following the power line incident, I gave it a good inspection
and did not notice this problem.  I think it occurred following several 45
degree "dork" landings.  It was one of these landings at Phoenix that
popped the rear bolt loose and lead to the discovery of the short bolt.

A picture is available on my web site (at the
bottom of the other pictures).

[RCSE] AG36 Coordinates

2006-02-18 Thread Chuck Anderson
I have been looking at the Bubble Dancer airfoils but am unable to
find coordinates for AG35, AG36, AG37 or AG38 in normal COR
format. Coordinates for these airfoils on the Charles River site
listed as COR and DAT airfoils are apparently referenced to the
bottom surface of the airfoil instead of the chord line. I haven't
seen airfoil coordinates referenced to the bottom surface since the
free flight airfoils from over 50 years ago. Coordinates for other
Drela airfoils that I have checked are in the normal COR format
referenced to the chord line.

While my plot program can plot airfoils from coordinates referenced
to the bottom of the airfoil in the old NACA format, it can't plot
them from airfoils in COR or DAT format that are referenced to the
bottom surface. Daryl sent me coordinates for the AG35 airfoil in
coordinates referenced to the chord line but I am in need of
coordinates for the AG36 referenced to the chord line. Anybody know
where I can find them in normal COR format?

Kind of shows why I giggle a the 'real' value of 5 cells.

Thin or thick wire doesn't make any difference if you have just one poor
connection in a connector pin, wing pin, switch contact.

Great wire just means you are prepared to use power...it doesn't mean
that the power is going to be available.

How much voltage will be carried by a wire as thick as your little
finger if no power source is connected?

Yep time to start thinking 'system'. :-)
