*Live* from the AMA site!

Some photos of the winners and a snapshot of the final scores after 8
rounds of tough air:
http://louisvillesoaring.org/gallery/20060721nats

Not a bad day for Team Polecat ;)

1. Mike Smith
2. Bruce Davidson
3. Shane Spickler
4. Doug Pike
5. Doug Harnisch

The weather produced some really tough air, which combined with Ed
Franz' difficult tasks (two 3's and a 4, two 4's and a 2, 3x3) made for
some serious shake-ups in the scores all day long. An excellent
contest, despite my sad placing :)

BTW - If you want to use the Wireless Internet access that now covers
the *entire* AMA site, ask them at NATS HQ (the little house). They'll
give you the password after you sign a three-page form!

F3B, Aerotow and XC today!

[RCSE] FS: Like New Vintage ARF Falcon 880

2006-07-22 Thread Tom Roberts
For Sale: Like New Vintage ARF Falcon 880

This vintage Falcon 880 has been in storage for the
past 15 years and I have finally decided to sell it
due to my lack of involvement with the hobby. Remember
Daryl Perkins yellow and blue Falcon 880 which he has
won countless contests with? This is Falcon is a
carbon copy but painted white (top) and blue (bottom)
instead. This Falcon is NICE! Countless hours have
been put into wing construction and and overall finish
of this model.

Wings have a S3021 airfoil. Construction is 1/16 inch
balsa over 1.5 lb density expanded bead white foam
with carbon fiber/glass reinforced spar stucture.
Trailing edges are reinforced with glass cloth between
the balsa for stiffness durability. Over the entire
wing structure 3/4 oz. glass was applied to the balsa
to seal the structure prior to lacquer painting.
Hinges are Arrow-shaft type with each flap having
about 60 degrees travel from nuetral. Wings already
have servo cutouts and wiring installed. After all
these years in storage, the wings are still very
straight and glass smooth. Included is an oil-hardened
wing rod. Fuselage is finished with white laquer
paint, has tow hook installed and two Airtronics 94102
servos installed. Fuselage is epoxy glass with kevlar
reinforcement. Canopy is a dark blue pigmented epoxy
glass type. Tail surfaces are monokoted built-up balsa
structures. Care was taken to keep the tail as light
as possible. Fuselage linkages are installed and
operational. When this Falcon was completed it was
flown for a total of about 1 hour then stored in a
bedroom for 15 years. Total flying weight is in the
low 70 oz.

My preference is to hand deliver this model to the
buyer or a friend of the buyer in the Santa Clara
County California area since I don't want to see this
item crushed by the shipping company. I'm willing to
deliver for free in Santa Clara County. If a local
delivery is not possible, I'd consider shipping this
item in a professionally packed (oversize) box at the
expense of the buyer.

Price: $500.00 firm

Email namg_engr at yahoo dot com for photos and any
questions.

Thanks.

-Tom

[RCSE] Re: 2006 NATS Handlaunch Photos/Scores

2006-07-22 Thread David Register

George,

Thanks - it was a great meet at a really good soaring site - AMA has
improved the grounds significantly since I was last here a few years
back. The guys who placed earned every point. The level of competition
in DLG continues to climb every year and the level of information
sharing by the top competitors continues to parallel that ascent. A meet
like this is an excellent opportunity to learn from these guys both by
watching them 'at work' and by asking them to time and offer advice on
the spot. For a 61 year old, I ain't ashamed of missing wood by a bit.

I would really encourage those in the mid and south west to travel to
events like this (and IHLGF, Polecat, etc.). We have a ways to go in
those regions to be able to compete with the east and west coast
effectively. The only way to understand the level of skills out here is
to come out and get your butt kicked a few times. It's humbling but
educational. It's a unique opportunity to meet guys that share this
interest as well as a great way to catch up with old friends.

A special thanks to DLG CD Ed Franz and asst-CD Denny Maize for a very
well organized and enjoyable event.

See y'all at TNT.

[RCSE] The 'Real' DLG NATS Champion

2006-07-22 Thread GordySoar

Congrats to Mike Smith, he's definitely got the Muncie field's
number!

But the real hero of the DLG Nats was someone elseits the guy that
ended up second but stepped up to do everything he could to help Mike
during his flights(as timer) get the best possible opportunities to
do well(when they weren't flying the same rounds against each other that
is) .

My hat's off to Bruce Davidson, a world class DLG guy and a world class
kind of friend...to everyone in the hobby.

Had Mike done as good a job for Bruce when he was timing, likely they would
have tied for first :-)

The Louisville Soaring Society fielded 3 pilots this year for the NATS DLG
event...not bad for a small club and a testament to Bruce for mentoring in our
club.

Hope to see you guys there this week for RES, and Unlimited.

[RCSE] Did the JR 10 RX, Remote Program Button Mod, You?

2006-07-22 Thread GordySoar

Hi guys,

Took a soldering gun and about 5mins to figure out and do the mod to make
the JR 10 Synth RX accept a remote button for programming.

Now I don't have to be stabbing the RX in the face at the field or fighting
with it for access.

It has 10 channels, right? A JR 9303 has 9, we only use 6 for the
most part, 7 if you have a Picolario.

I just melted the solder joint on AUX 5's signal pin and shook off the
solder acting as a jumper to the Aux5 signal land on the board. Once it was
clear, I figured out that the 'edge' side of the face button was the hot side,
the other just ground, so I ran a small wire from that edge side connection to
the AUX 5 Signal pin.

Now I can plug in one of my Polk Set Buttons and it does the same as poking
the inny button. No chopping and it would take about a minute to put it all back
just the way it was.

Totally exhausted from the effortnot.

You guys probably had it figure out though.

[RCSE] Remote Button Photo of Mod available

2006-07-22 Thread GordySoar

Okay guys, a photo is worth a thousand of most people's words, but about
equal to my eloquence...so if you
HAVE a JR 10 Synth RX and want to do the mod, ask me off line and I'll shoot you
some naked photos, and some of the mod detail too :)
Gordy
Remember this...modifying the RX voids its warranty...and that just
makes it that much more fun to do. Have some balls and remember you own
it, so you can decide to take that extremely dangerous risk...Some ability to
point a small soldering tip is necessary for this mod.

[RCSE] August issue of RCSD now available

2006-07-22 Thread Bill Bunny Kuhlman

The August issue of RC Soaring Digest is now available for
downloading from the RCSD web site http://www.rcsoaringdigest.com.
This issue has fifty-eight pages of text and photos. The PDF is
approximately 9.5 MB in size.

The August issue highlights are now available at
http://www.rcsoaringdigest.com/highlights.html.

If you are using a dial-up connection and have been wishing for
smaller RCSD PDFs, consider downloading the compressed version (3.4
MB) of this issue from the RCSoaringDigest Yahoo! groups Files
section. The image quality is somewhat reduced, but download time is
significantly less. You must be a member of the RCSoaringDigest
Yahoo! group to download the compressed PDF.

Thanks for your continued readership!
