[RCSE] US altitude record

2006-07-28 Thread Mark Howard
For several years there has been a snafu at AMA reporting a record that Bob
Vixie and I set in 2004. Model Aviation has the wrong info for open class (D) -
F3 sailplane altitude gain. I've finally gotten around to posting a scan of the
certificate on my website:
http://www.msh-co.com/record/index.html

OS -- I've been busy lately updating new pix... on my main site if you are
interested:

http://www.msh-co.com

I haven't updated the soaring pix in a long time - but I've got a new process
that should make that job easier.

TOTALLY OS --- I have done some neat stuff with Google maps. I plan on doing a
new Euro map with placemark locations of photos that my dad shot in WWII in
France and Germany with links to contemporary sites. I have a few sample shots
in "Intl Travel"->"France 2003"->"Paris Then & Now"

Enjoy,
Mark

[RCSE] NATS RES Scores!

2006-07-28 Thread Ben Wilson
RES wrapped up an hour ago - Dennis Hoyle takes top honors after five
rounds!

Our own Ed Wilson took sixth wood, and many I BEAT GORDY buttons were
handed out ;)

http://louisvillesoaring.org/tmp/20060728-nats-res-02-final_scores.jpg

Overcast and dreary early in the AM for the first couple of rounds.
Eventually the sky broke open to blue (it really does exist here in
Muncie, honest!) and while a few boomers were found and exploited, the
air was still turbulent and the winds were still up.

Me? I flew the best 4 rounds of contest air in my life - 4 1000+
rounds. However, Round 1 was a scratch thanks to a broken RX crystal!
It was working in the pits, but at the winch, a no-go. Luckily I didn't
launch it. Nonetheless, I am in deep, deep love with my Polecat EZBD.
Hard launchin' and bubble dancin' and lands very well.

BEST.
NATS.
EVER.

[RCSE] After the 2006 NATS - 2 Meter Comments

2006-07-28 Thread Jim Deck
From time-to-time in this forum the topic of two meter sailplanes pops
up. Frequently quoted is the now very tired "Friends don't let friends fly
two meters." Even so, over fifty apparently friendless sailplane pilots
competed in the two day, two meter event at this year's 2006 AMA/LSF NATS in
scenic Muncie, Indiana. It was my pleasure to have been the contest
director for this event and, now that I'm home, I offer the following
comments for this forum's edification and entertainment:
   - First, the competition was every bit as fierce as the much-touted
unlimited event which followed. As we were blessed with two days of
beautiful weather, thirteen rounds were flown. At the end of those thirteen
rounds, a mere 13 points separated first and second place with numerous lead
changes throughout the event. From my vantage point, all of the competitors
appeared to be enjoying themselves.
   - Second, it would be all too easy to say that there hasn't been a new
two meter design in some time as the dominant design utilized by the top ten
finishers was the venerable "Duck". Ahh, but most of the Ducks flying were
about as close to the original Duck as a 2006 Corvette is close to the
original 1954 model. Sporting a variety of airfoils, v-tails, and carbon
fiber, even Daryl's "loaner" was an example of the evolution of a design
that was very good to begin with. If you'd like a new, improved Duck,
better contact Larry Storie soon as I suspect he'll receive more than a few
orders (maybe even a few from California). By the way, Daryl's Duck did
sport the raw fiberglass fuselage that's quite the West Coast vogue this
giving it a particular California flavor.
   - Lastly, I must confess that I was among those who wondered if two
meter really deserved two days of NATS time. I'm now convinced that the
challenge of competitively flying a two meter sailplane is equal to the
challenge of any other soaring event and will state that that challenge
should continue to earn two meter sailplanes their well-deserved portion of
NATS time.

   Respectfully submitted,
   Jim Deck

Ben,

You forgot to mention the great 3RD place win that Ray Hays got with this
Bird series woody. He beat most of the buck ARF's. It was a great show for
Ray and a wonderful day of RES.

Re: [RCSE] After the 2006 NATS - 2 Meter Comments

2006-07-28 Thread Rick Eckel

Jim,

Thanks for the thoughtful post. I suspect that there are quite a few
of us out here who, although we couldn't attend the NATS, are fans of
2 meter flying. I think that the demise of 2 meter is overrated and
over-reported. There are still a good bunch who appreciated the
attributes of 2 meter craft and the skill they take to fly. In some
respects, arguably, they present more of a challenge than their
longer winged counterparts.

I hope and expect that 2 meter will be alive and well when I am able
to attend and compete in the NATS.

A very fine post in its entirety, Jim. 2-Meters is a world unto itself, and
when good flyers go at it, it's a very worthwhile event. You have to launch to
the moon, then find lift quick, because the little planes come down in a hurry
and don't travel well if you hit sink.

The dominance of the Duck design seems to me to have some interesting
implications. U.S. flyers generally have disdained V-tail airplanes, but the
Duck shows that they can learn to love 'em if the tail is big enough.
Additionally, the Duck has a fairly low AR wing and is pretty heavy; these
characteristics don't match the current fashion, but in this class they seem to
prove out to be best in practice.

It would be neat to see a resurgence of interest in 2M, just to see what other
design tweaks might come along. It seems that there hasn't been much design
activity in this class since the Organic and 2M Mantis. Maybe there's a
world-beater out there to be discovered.

[RCSE] "RES Scores, see how I raged down the list!"

2006-07-28 Thread GordySoar

RES was a ball, and I know better to expect to be more than a bottom ringer
at that game...too many good old sticks at that game.

LOTS of AVAs, some awesome wood ships and Saprano's.

Every round I told my teammates that this would be the round were I'd get
out and bury the crewbut mostly spent each round in the golf cart to
retrieve my plane :-)

Peter Baumeler (the Iron Chef) had his Picolario whistling and flew that
ship like it was a fine instrument.  I watched one of his flights start to
finish and have to tell you it was amazing how he followed the ebb and flow of
the air, even down to near the landing zone where he had to stretch the time
some.

But I think I am proudest of my fellow Louisville teammates, who all did
really well today, especially Ed Wilson flying a Saprano.  He's a past RES
and Nostalgia Champ and it showed today...but both Ben Wilson and Tony Utley had
sweet rounds.

Glad to be home for sure though.

Maybe next Nats I'll actually have my planes programmed into my TX before I
walk up to the winch line Might help things some :-)

yesterday and some of the RES guys today!  Those who managed to out score
me for a day of soaring qualified for a "I beat Gordy at the 2006 Nats"
button..well with a donation of at least $3, but I have to tell you, many handed
over up to $20  Those are the real heroes of LSF spirit.

Lee is about 4' tall, rosy cheeked, dark eyed and dark hair, a lot of us
thought when DP saw him, he was going to sweep him into his arms and
exclaim,"MINI-ME!" :-)

Anyway, it was a fun day.
Peter Goldsmith of Horizon was given the LeGrey award for some pretty
good reasons, not counting the huge volunteer prize donations from Horizon at
the Banquette and surely he deserves it as much as anyone...well almost as much
as anyone in my humble opinion :-)

Ed Wilson, President for years and years of the Louisville Area Soaring
Society, mentor to little Lee and mentor to another young boy who'd showed up at
the field a bunch of years backBruce Davidson!  LSF VP, LSF5 and the
never ending energy behind the MidSouth Louisville and Louisville Soaring in
general.  There's seldom been a day where the winch/retriever trailer
haven't been at the field, setup, charged with good line on a Sunday or Thursday
evening. Every winter, club meetings are packed with interesting topics and
sidebars to soaring.  Ed Wilson is the true Spirit of Soaring and
embodies what grass roots rc soaring is really about.
Don't believe me?  Ask Bruce Davidson...multi Nats DLG winner and
mentor himself to Ben Wilson and others.  You see Ed's spirit is the kind
that get's passed on.
Congrats to Pete, a great guy in his own right..and now as a LeGrey
award winner, holder of the responsibility to pass on that spirit! :-)

Ed's turn will likely be in the next round :-)Gordy
This award was created, in 1996, by the LSF Board of
directors, in memory of Le Gray the founder of the League of Silent Flight. It
is to be a lifetime Achievment award. Members of the LSF may nominate candidates
to the LSF Board of Directors who have the final decision on the recipient.

Was anyone flying the Mark Drela designed Aegea 2M at the NATS?

The design for the Aegea 2M was posted to the Allegro-Lite group in
August 2002, so it seems to be contemporaneous with the Mantis 2M &
the Organic 2M.

[RCSE] Balast Photon II

2006-07-28 Thread Jay Hunter
Has anyone figured a way to balast a photon II so that it can make it through 10-15mph winds?

Thanks,

Jay

[RCSE] Rudder Stalls and turns.

2006-07-28 Thread Jay Hunter
I am trying to figure out if my rudder turns are accurate.  I
think I am experienceing rudder stalls with my photon, from either
too much deflection or from holding the deflection too long.

In other word do I ever want the rudder to cause my plane to roll?

Can someone explain to me what a rudderstall is and how to prevent it?

Should all rudder turns remain flat?

Also is a roll a rudder stall of sorts?

Thanks,

Jay
