I had a transmitter antenna problem last year. My Futaba 8 U has a Smiley
Rubber Ducky antenna. This attaches by means of a spring loaded bayonet mount.
Due to the design the spring loading allows the mating pin to flex back and
fourth a bit. After years of use I found the pin had broken off and that I had
been flying with the antenna connection just barely touching. I think that is
what caused the crash of my Organic at last years Nats.

So I bought a new Rubber Ducky antenna assuming I would get a few more years
of use before it failed. I was wrong. I just checked it and found it had
failed the same way. After only a few months of use. Probably due to all the
HL flying I've been doing which causes a lot of flexing of the spring loaded
mount back and fourth during the launching process with it's attendant mating
pin flexing.

Glad I caught it during a shop check.

Re: [RCSE] Postal Ladder Challenge

2008-02-10 Thread Jack Iafret
Mike,

The electric soaring guys do this kind of thing on a monthly basis (X5J)-
Bob Burson set it up several years ago and it seems to go well world-wide.
He manages this on RC Groups so if you want to look over his techniques,
take a look- http://www.rcgroups.com/electric-sailplanes.

I am only suggesting that if you get this going, perhaps RC Groups is a
better format to spread the event (or both formats for that matter).

BTW, we have a foot of snow on the ground in my area and today will probably
just break zero actual and a 25 mph wind- I ain't going nowhere-

I was going to try this as practice for the upcoming contest season.
Then I thought why not let everyone get in on the fun! The rules are simple, do
an 8min. 10min. 12min. and 14min. flight (in order). This is not precision, so
you can time yourself, just go over the time by at least one second. After you
make each time do a normal measured 25ft landing. Now here is the catch. After
each landing you can do that flight again to try to improve on the landing but
you only keep your last landing. You cannot go back, you must start over if
your unhappy with your score, take as many tries as you need to get each time.
Score 1point per second, 2460 total max for time, each landing divide by 2,
50points per landing, making 2660points possible. Three classes, Open, RES, and
Easy Glider. Bragging rights only. E-mail your best score and we will compare.
This will be on going. Looking to fly tomorrow, we have had rain the last 3
weekends. Mike Reagan

So Mike, if I understand this correctly, you keep trying until you make each
time, so the difference in scores will just be landings. Is that right or am I
confused?

[RCSE] fun at the cane field

2008-02-10 Thread Paul Perret
I went out to the sugar cane field yesterday for my
first flights on my new 9303 2.4 JR in my Sharon. It
was fantastic conditions with little wind, puffy
clouds, and 70 degrees. Since I usually fly alone, I
had my wife help do a range test before I left home.
So, at the field, I put it together, wiggled the
sticks and launched. This system works great. I did
get, and use, a little capacitor type thing that Todds
Models has on his web site. If these 2.4 systems get a
spike in current use, the receiver can shut down and
take a few seconds to reconnect. This capacitor thingy
solves that problem - so far so good. Big thermals
were abundant. I was even thermaling inverted and fun
stuff like that. I got the switches set up where I
like them and I really like this new radio.
On my last launch I broke the line which balled up and
broke the brake lever on the winch. Oh well, I guess
I'll have to go to a heaver line.
As I tried to leave I got stuck in the mud. The more I
worked at trying to get unstuck the deeper I got. Well
I called AAA who said they would send someone but that
it would cost me because they don't pay if you get
stuck intentionally!!???
I was sitting there waiting as the sun got low and the
mosquitoes started to swarm when all of a sudden there
were thousands of little black birds going after those
bugs. This spurred me to get out my hand launch and
join them. As I flew around, the birds congregated in
a huge swirl above my plane. I flew over that giant,
red setting sun with all those swirling birds over my
plane, and it made a magnificent, memorable picture!
The tow truck did finally get there and get me out,
but not before he got stuck himself! He called me
three hours later at home to tell me he had just
gotten out after being rescued by a bigger tow truck.
Even though I got stuck, it was a great day flying a
the field.

[RCSE] Postal Ladder Challenge

2008-02-10 Thread mike reagan

Managed 2639.5, all on first attempt, no do-overs. My Supra worked good, barely
made the ten. Anybody not in snow give it a try? Mike Reagan

[RCSE] Oh What a Beautiful Day!!

2008-02-10 Thread Hilaunch

It was absolutely beautiful at the Poway Flying Site today. Temperature
about 75, wind about 5 mph and a new thermal about every 8 - 10 minutes. A
pair of Red Tailed Hawks shared the sky with us, frequently pointing out the
thermals that we may not have found. It is the hawk's matting season so they
are more interested in each other than in some sailplane. I would not mind
being reincarnated as a hawk, but we will need to negotiate the sex life.

All the toys in the car saw some of the beautiful air. The E Blaster
took about an hour of the late afternoon. The extra weight of the motor and
battery seemed to help on those long trecks upwind to catch the next thermal.
Of course the Supra got lots of action as it is nearly time for the trip to
Phoenix.

My Supra, 'Ole #42, is entering its third year of flying and by my
count, its 5th life. The wing, tail feathers and boom are original, but it is
on
the third pod. This one is 2.4 friendly so I can use my DX7 and AR7000
receiver with a satellite receiver. Setting up the Supra required some
patience
and the help of Mike L's program. I am learning to speak JR, but occasionaly
I relapse and think that a flap is a flap only to be reminded that a flap is
really a throttle or maybe an aux. Anyway it all works and I can find the
sub trim menu in less than a dozen clicks.

Today was the last day for top actuated flaps. Lots of glue, fiberglass
tape and words did not fix the problem so tonight they will be converted to
bottom horns and linkage. After two years of landing with the flaps down,
the mounts seem to unrepairable. If I had DP's thumbs, I could get the flaps
up before they hit the ground.

The sunset over the Pacific is fantastic tonight. Tomorrow looks like
another good one.

And you SOAR?

[RCSE] "Supra Flap Link Insert Changed"

2008-02-10 Thread GordySoar

bottom horns and linkage. After two years of landing with the flaps down, the
mounts seem to unrepairable. If I had DP's thumbs, I could get the flaps up

The Supra has come a long way baby :-) With the help of all of us. Wing
bolt mount pod changes, longer bolts, wing sub rib changes, layup changes, and
both the aileron link insert and now flap inserts too...and lets not forget
that now the ailerons go all the way to the tips...they are lighter now and
stiffer too on the current batch of wings coming to Barry's den of storage.

A short while back, well maybe a year or so, it was pretty clear that the
area where the aileron inserts were mounted and how they were mounted needed
to
be changed for linkage geometry and durability, you can tell the new version
because the hump is a bit taller.

Those of you who hit the landing spot too hard like me, find pretty soon a
bubble in the skin around the flap inserts on top. And the flaps not moving
together and a lot of slop too. You glue it and glue it but in the end like
Don the answer is to put carbon horns in the bottom

The new wing has a far more durable link insert for both the ailerons and
flaps.

Mine? I think I have one more gluing left before I switch over to bottom
horns :-)

receivers that are included inside. This allowed me to place 3 remote
receivers in both wingtips and the tail:

[RCSE] Broken Supra tail feathers for science?

Does anyone have a broken Supra stab or rudder to spare? I have a
friend that has a laser cutting table that I know would be a great way
to get really clean lightening holes cut, but I need some test victims
to try out to set up the machine with. If successful, I'm sure I can
get holes cut for anyone that wants them at a very nominal cost.
