[RCSE] Question regarding 2.4GHz..Answer :-)
Greg and Gordy, I am likewise a fan of these little beeper/finder/battery monitors. This one from Sky King RC Products is my favorite. http://www.skykingrcproducts.com/accessories/lostmodel/lost_rc_model_alarm.html This is the only one I hav been able to get to work with both FM and PCM. But I have not been able to get it to work with 2.4 GHz. Spektrum receivers. Gordy, you say you can make it work. Have you actually tried? If you have been successful, perhaps you can give us a step by step. The procedure I used for PCM did not work for 2.4 GHz Spektrum. Is there something new that will work with the 2.4GHZ radios? Greg

This will work fine with PPM, PCM or 2.4 GHz stuff, and you won't have to do any special programming to make it work -- http://www.hobbico.com/radioaccys/hcap0335.html The lost plane alarm will be activated if the servo channel it's on stops getting pulses, which is what works with normal PPM stuff and doesn't work with PCM or 2.4 GHz gear. However, the transmiter inactivity signal (which sounds the same as the lost plane alarm) will still work even with PCM or 2.4 GHz -- if you stop moving the sticks (or if you go into and stay in failsafe), that channel will be idle (not changing, though it may still be getting servo pulses), and once it's been idle for a minute, the alarm start beeping as if your plane was lost. And yes, I've tried it. The downside is that your plane will get upset and start beeping if you leave it turned on and idle for a few minutes -- like when you put it down between flights. Most annoying. I wish they'd made the timeout five minutes instead. -- Doug McLaren, [EMAIL PROTECTED] You fight until hell freezes over. Re: [RCSE] Question regarding 2.4GHz..Answer :-)
SkyKing here. So far we do not have a solution for Spectrum 2.4GHz systems. They all employ a fail safe which cannot be turned off. This defeats our locator. The Futaba 2.4GHz 6 channel 2.4 GHz allows us to use the gear channel on/off toggle switch to turn our locator on or off without the need for turning the TX off. I have never tested the Hobbico lost model device but it might work with your 2.4 GHz TX. It triggers on when the device does not detect any stick movement for a period of time. But, I'm not certain if it will work since I have never tested one. We will have a unit at some point but at the moment it is a back burner project. [RCSE] A possible sport tube alternative...NOT ;-)
Sorry Charlie! But this isn't close to an alternative to a Sportube. Anyone who has actually used a Sportube knows why too. This might be an alternative to a cardboard box, or one of the plastic sign material boxes...except that its around so way too much space would be wasted trying to fit wings and thingsnot sure which planes you think might have a Vertical short enough to fit something like this thing. Okay here is why, the number one reason actually listed one nite on Late NightSportubes became the number one choice of discerning sailplane contest pilots because.they collapse. You get off the airline, pick up your Sportube, drag it to the rental car using its conveniently placed handles, rolling it on its wheels...only to find the car's back seat doesn't go down, and even it the backs do, theres no way a box of that girth and length is going to fit! What to do? :-) You undo the TSA padlock, slip the top off the Sportube, remove your plane parts, Plane Perch components and miscellaneous tape and tools...of course your Sirius charger...lay then on the back seat of the rental car, then collapse the Sportube to its 40 or so, and slip it in the trunk...adding your laptop case and check bag which has your TX and underwear for the weekend. You can tune a guitar, but you can't tune a fish...Charlie! :-) And are you ever going to show up at a contest in Florida while I visiting Gordy Orlando tonite :-) In a message dated 3/25/2008 7:07:39 P.M. [RCSE] Re: Special Sportube TSA lock now offered!
-Gordy, I travel with Sportubes internationally and regular locks are OK. However, you have to be prepared to unlock Sportubes for inspection as you're checking in.- Hi Steve Lets see in the last month I've been to Jamaica, Dubai, Mauitius, even Alabama and Orlando...this year, Caracas, Bahamas, many places in Mexicoetc...always with my Sportube, so kind of have a bit of experience of traveling around the globe and USA on airlines...weekly ;-). There is a very political reason to use the TSA lock and of course that's because its the 'official' lock approved for airline use by our H.S. Maybe they just know me by now, but so far the best way to go is the TSA lock, but until now you had to make some sort of adapter for using one with Sportubesnow with the new Sportube special cable lock, it makes things a bit easier. Use that C Clip they send with the Sportube as a 'close' limiter. So where have you been flying your sailplanes when you travel internationally with a Sportube? Where do you carry your TX? And which sailplanes do you usually carry with you? [RCSE] Re: Special Sportube TSA lock now offered!
Howdy Gordy, For the last 5 years I've made an annual pilgrimage to Europe to fly in one of the finest Alpine soaring venues: Hahnenmoospass in Switzerland. Alpine flying is at the exact opposite end of the world from you flat lander types (of which I am one as well). Typical landings are uphill and down wind. Neve a dull moment and you learn how to make an overnight repair on a broken sailplane real quick. In addition, we have flown at the Interlaken aerotow for the last few years and typically include another country as well on our trips e.g. Germany, Italy, etc. Airlines have included Air France, Delta, Alitalia and a few others I can't recall at the moment plus local Europeans like CitiJet. Having a wife and child allows 6 pieces of luggage: typically 3 Sportubes, 1 big cardboard box with TX, flight batteries, chargers, etc. and 2 suite cases with clothes, v-tails, etc. Planes on the last trip: 4 meter Lunak (2 meter cardboard box in lieu of one Sportube), small Minimoa, electric Escape, electric Graphite and another 2.5 meter electric glider...a something 2000. I fabricated some aluminum stops so the Sportubes cannot close beyond a certain point. I also attached a cable system to keep the two halves from sliding open. All this is to insure that if the locks were ever cut open or not fully engaged in the two case halves, the case would remain secure. Most of the time TSA agents just wipe the case with that special sniffer paper and let them go. Last year I had to open the big cardboard box. I can't remember the last time I had to open a Sportube for inspection. Maybe they figure that a middle age guy with wife and adorable daughter in tow pose no great threat. On the other hand, a single guy who spends a lot of time in search of dirty beaches might raise some security concerns! That's my story and I'm sticking with it. Join us this summer: we leave in mid-July for 2 weeks. In a message dated 3/25/08 6:51:11 PM, Soaring@airage.com writes: A possible sport tube alternative Gordy, please, try some decaf. :-) It looked interesting to me because it is inexpensive, as much as a third less than a Sport Tube. Some of the models on that page will take a TSA lock as well, they even sell the locks at the same site. It's a high density HDPE plastic that should hold up okay, We ship $5k tripods and heads in them. Is it for everyone, no. Nor for every model. For planes with removable v tails, it would probably work. They come in various sizes. If you customize the insert you put in it, a plane with a modest v stab might be made to snuggle into it. It has a flat side, some are octagonal ... so it can sit still and not roll. It doesn't open in the middle, which is bad. It cannot be collapsed by more than five inches, which may save some models from too-clumsy TSA goons. What the Sport Tube has going for it is, among other things, it often qqualifies for an airline shipping discount as it usually gets called sports equipment because it was for hauling skis and the like. For someone on a budget, though, this might be something to look at. For me, the tube would be worth more than any three of my planes plus their radios:-) Go to markertek.com and check it out for yourself, is all I wanted to offer. Then make up your own mind. Re: [RCSE] A possible sport tube alternative
I checked out the links and while I saw the sizes, I didn't see the part where they collapse down to fit in a rental car trunk. Can you point me to that part of the website? You see I travel a lot with my sailplanes and could use a case with wheels, and handles, big enough to fit two unlimited ships, my charger, all the pieces and the steel pole that make up my Plane Perch...and fits the no charge exception for sporting goods at a glance. Oh yeah it has to protect my planes when the case makes it part way up the conveyor to the airliner's luggage hold, the falls off to the ground about 10' or so.
