[RCSE] 30 minute first flight on my new Cularis by Hitec/MPX)

2008-05-27 Thread GordySoar
Hi guys,

I flew my Cularis today off my winch. Good air day.

Like a good little instruction follower, I balanced it on the dots.

I gave it a gentle hand toss and as expected, DOINK about 15' in front of me.

All I had for nose weight is a 4cell 1250 sub C pack with the cells standing
upright beside each other in a row. It was all the way up against
theplastic motor mount cup.

Once balanced it is now all the way back against the foam cross piece just
in front of the servos.

The model balances at 4 measured from the trailing edge of the wing, 1
behind the dots.

I'm working on my Silver Level Canadian Soaring Task, which asks for 6 30min
thermal flights (witnessed). So I decided what the heck, might as well
take one down with the Cularis.

Most of the flight it was impossible to see the model, blue skies with high
thin clouds, and she was up at about 1200' (I know because I have a Picolario
talking altimeter) for most of the flight.

I have 3/8 full span camber programmed in for thermaling, that bends back
to about 3/16 in the air, but worked well...and the usual rudder to aileron
mix, camber pump with elevator and as is normal most of the thermaling was done
with 80% rudder stick and a bit of up trim elevator...along with the camber.

I'll admit I'm surprised it launches well with the all the glass rods
replaced with carbon or carbon tubes...and she flies as well as a Spirit Elite
100.

The landing flaps are functional too.

Very nice piece of foam. I made the tips and ruder and nose cone tape-ons,
so that it all fits in the box for storage...likely mine will sit in the
rafters for the next few years, but it was a fun project and excellent flying
model.

Definitely worth the money and for a newbie to the hobby of soaring, easy to
build, durable and fun to fly too.
Also worth the money for someone who wants a scale looking slope ship! Full
house, full flying stab, the wings snap in and the servos plug themselves in
too! You can paint it with Krylon if you like by the way.

2008-05-27 Thread John Erickson
AJ,

On the Easy Glider you need to make a new tow hook. Most common way is to
drill a 3/8 hole at the very rear end of the existing tow hook tray. Glue
in a 3/8 x 1 1/2 dowel and thread a tow hook into that. It will launch
steeper in the new configuration.

Re: [RCSE] 30 minute first flight on my new Cularis by Hitec/MPX)

2008-05-27 Thread Richard Williamson
Many members of the Charles River Radio Controllers have purchased Easy
Gliders. This year, we will hold our second annual man-on-man Easy
Glider contest. The gliders are winch launched. A standard
modification of the basic Easy Glider is to replace the supplied
fiberglass wing rod with a carbon fiber tube. With his tube, the
gliders can take a full-pedal winch launch with a nice zoom at the end.

Our experience has been that the CG in the plans is right on. The
reason for poor launches is the position of the tow hook. The most
important modification is to move the tow hook back. We have found that
a position at the rear end of the tow-hook well is about right for a
steep launch. The usual approach is to use a cup hook. The hook from
the hardware store is bent into a right angle and screwed into a piece
of wood embed into the bottom of the plane.

Re: [RCSE] 30 minute first flight on my new Cularis by Hitec/MPX)

2008-05-27 Thread Richard Williamson
The plastic tube for the Easy Glider antenna runs down the center of the
fuselage. If you drill too deeply, you will drill right through that
tube. I think that a 1.5-in.-long dowel is too long. I recommend a
large-diameter dowel glued in as deeply as you can without severing the
antenna tube.

[RCSE] 30 minute first flight on my new Cularis by Hitec/MPX)

2008-05-27 Thread Ed Anderson
We launch EG off the winch all the time. Actually it makes a great training
plane for the winch. With the standard hook and the standard wing rod, you can
step on the pedal and go full bore. The launch angle is low but you get a
wicked zoom!

I don't know anyone in our club who has replaced the wing rod, but several have
moved the tow hook back and are tapping the plane up in a fashion similar to a
2M woody. Have not seen a broken wing rod yet.

I imagine you could also slip a birch dowel into the standard wing rod to make
it stronger. It would increase the weight a little but I don't think it would
be detrimental.

I do that with a steel rod for ballast purposes.

We Have 19 EZG's called Beer Coolers here GDSHS. Use a carbon rod inside of the

plate for a new hook base and locate the hook at 3.00 behind the wing L/E. Same
location as the C/G. Monster launches with Wade winches.

HLG enthusiasts everywhere,

This is to let you know that we will be posting the Pilot Roster and
frequency assignments for the IHLGF 2008 within the next two days on the
IHLGF 2008 website:: http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/2008IHLGF.htm. . If
your name does not appear on the roster and you believe you have registered,
please contact me directly and we will get the matter cleared up.

We also want to let you know that if you are not on the roster and want to
participate in this year's IHLGF (June-7-8), you have until Tuesday, June
3rd to register. You may do this online on our website noted above. In order
to make sure we can facilitate your frequency choices, please be sure to
select THREE (3) frequencies. We will do our best to give you your first
choice but cannot guarantee it. Please register as soon as possible.

Third item, and this is important for anyone planning on flying on the Poway
field on Friday afternoon; Due to the F6D contest which is being held on
Friday afternoon, the field will be closed on Friday afternoon to any flying
except for those registered in the F6D contest. There is no entry fee and
the F6D tasks are very similar to two of the F3K tasks you will be flying in
the IHLGF, so there really is no reason for you not to register. Consider it
a real practice session for the IHLGF. You must register on-line on the USA
World Air Games Selection Contest website:
http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/USWAG2009SC.htm. All the details of the
event are on this site. If you have any questions, please feel free to
