[RCSE] 2009 World Air Games
The 2009 World Games (WAG) to be held in Turin Italy is going to include three aeromodeling events. The three RC classes are Artistic Aerobatics, Indoor Musicals and Hand-Thrown Gliders. These are not the regular FAI classes but rather events in the FAI Airsport Promotion Classes F6A, F6B and F6D. Class F6D is Hand-Thrown Gliders and the rules are in the FAI Sporting Code. See http://wag2009.free.fr/ciam_sel.htm for details and links regarding the WAG. We have a good opportunity to participate as there are slots reserved for each continent but currently there isn't any organized activity in the USA. I need to make it absolutely clear AMA is not funding any WAG programs so participants are on their own. However I do believe AMA would assist administratively in the effort. Selection contests can be either national or international. It is not difficult to organize one or more national selection contests. The contest simply must be registered with AMA as a WAG selection contest. Any chartered club could run this. There is a lot of interest in F3K and RC hand launch glider competition so those of you running these kinds of contests may want to consider including a WAG event. Terry Edmonds

Misty Meadows is near Solon Iowa which is between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. On a larger scale it is 200 miles west of Chicago, 250 miles north of St. Louis and 300 miles south of Minneapolis. -- Date: Wed, 10 May 2006 01:40:42 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Soaring@airage.com Subject: Re: Soaring V1 #7607 Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ---1147239642 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit the midwest is a big place, where is misty meadows? ---1147239642 Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Misty Meadows Contest
We had terrific weather both days for the meet this year and a good turnout. I am often asked why I have the contest so early in the season when the weather is unpredictable, to say the least, in the upper Midwest. The reason is I have most of the site property in a government conservation program and I am not allowed to have vehicles on the field during bird nesting season of May 15th thru August 1st. I have scheduled the contest after Aug. 1 in past years but the turnout was not as good because of a lot of other area contests going on in the same time period. I actually have enough space in the center of the property that is not in the government program to fly with wind in any direction and do so year round. The problem with a contest like Misty Meadows is parking space for all the vehicles. The site is the unique thing about the meet and most who come here for the first time say they have never flown on a site like this before. It is my home and on 55 acres of gently rolling land. The launch area is terraced with an adjacent large pond. Not quite so apparent is the field is on a peninsula of a state park lake. Within flying range there are wooded areas, meadows, farm fields, large bodies of water and slopes. These things challenge the pilot on strategy as to where the lift will be on any given day and having to deal with surface turbulence if it is windy. I have run the contest for a number of years and am trying to slowly build it into a major event. I noticed there seems to be more of the lady spouses/friends coming and asked why that was. The answer I get is “this is the only contest we go to that has a real bathroom on the site”. You might not think that to be a big deal but ask your wife for an opinion. I now have a couple of sponsors and some other amenities. I do informal surveys to see what contestants want in a meet and what it takes to motivated them to travel a ways. I think I have that pretty well in the groove now. One thing I hear especially from the out of Towner’s is they like to get in a lot of rounds so I now have the reputation of being a slave driver. This year I ran the contest late on Saturday and called it on the early side on Sunday with the idea that people from out of the immediate area were going to stay over Saturday night anyway but would have to drive home on Sunday. In hindsight I could have run one more round on Sunday and still achieved that objective so sorry about than one guys. If you haven’t been to a Misty Meadows contest and you live in the Midwest, or anywhere else, consider coming next year. I will be here. Terry Edmonds

[RCSE] RE: Soaring V1 #4886
I have used a similar method but used liquid expandable foam you can get in hardware stores for sealing up holes. I cascade soda straws together to get the foam at the locations I want pushrod support. The trick is flowing in the correct amount of foam so as not to overdo it. You don't want to fill up the entire fuse and in fact could cause the fuse to burst open. With some testing you can get a feel for how much the foam expands and just get it where you want it. In my two AVA fuse's and my new Graphite 2 fuse, the most recent applications, I formed three 3/4" discs for each fuse. The front of the boom, the middle, and the rear, just forward of elevator and /or rudder attachments. Cut a notch in each disk to locate each pushrod outer as required by each design. Also in the middle of each disk fashion a notch to be used to orientate the discs as you are installing them to insure the push rods are lined up for smooth action. Shape one end of a 3/8" birch dowel like a screwdriver blade and use the dowel to rotate the disc for pushrod outer location. Don't forget to install the pushrod outers into the notches as you install the foam bulkheads. After the push rods are completed check for smooth operation and dribble slow drying epoxy from each end to fix the front and rear foam bulkheads in place. The center bulkhead should be epoxied prior to installing the front bulkhead. You will now have a very smooth push rod system without any slop or end play. [RCSE] Escape Tip Aileron Mod
I have been flying Escapes for several years now and have V-tail, X-tail and electric versions. The Escape certainly is one of the top F3J and unlimited models available today and the quality is second to none. The tip ailerons are a bit of a complication with advanced programming required and a little extra weight out on the wing tips. About a year ago I began experimenting flying the models with the tip ailerons disabled. Careful analysis revealed the tip ailerons really weren’t doing that much. Roll response in the landing configuration was a little better with the tip ailerons activated but that could easily be compensated for with a tad more throw and expo in the main aileron. So for the last year I have flying the models with the tip ailerons taped shut and the servos removed. At the 2004 F3J World Champs in Canada I noticed the Slovakian Team had some Escapes with a link pin between the main and tip aileron and were not using tip aileron servos. I had considered that idea before but didn’t think you could get a slop free connection because of the compound angle the two ailerons work at. I inquired with the pilots about this and they immediately went and got Jaro Muller (manufacture of Escapes) to show me how to do it. I have since installed this mod in one of my Escapes and can report it works perfectly and is slop free. Here is how it is done. Pins are glued in place in the main aileron and then left free to slide in and out of the tip aileron as the surfaces move up and down. The pins are located mid chord of the ailerons. Make pins from 3/64” music wire about ½” long. The tricky part is getting alignment of the two holes so the ailerons line up properly. Drill the holes as nearly aligned as you can but you probably will have to make them oversize at first. Glue the pin in the main aileron with epoxy and micro balloons straight with the main aileron hinge line and projecting just enough so the pin can engage the outer hole when the ailerons are flexed full down. You want the pin to project as much as possible to avoid the ailerons from accidentally disengaging. At this point the main and tip ailerons probably don’t quite line up so hog out the hole in the tip aileron in the correct direction. Put a drop of oil on the pin and a dab of epoxy in the hole. Move the aileron assembly to the full up position and tape them in alignment until the epoxy has cured. That’s all there is to it. Terry Edmonds
