[RCSE] HELP PLEASE

2005-05-13 Thread Erich Merkel
Hi all,

I need some help pronto... I hooked my 9303 up to the wrong charger last
night, fried the fuse, which I replaced. But now the display won't turn
off!! The power switch still controls the RF output, but not the display.
I have to disconnect the battery to get the display to go off. Any clues?
I have a contest to go to tomorrow (am leaving this afternoon), so any help
would be appreciated.

Re: [RCSE] AMA DVD

2005-02-26 Thread Erich Merkel

All your points are exactly as AMA has made them
plain in the letter accompanying the DVD... They do NOT require return, but
DO include a postage paid return sticker if you want to return it, and will not
send youfurther DVD's in the series unless you keep AND pay for the first
one... Personally, I'll be sending it back.

They are taking a risk. You do not have to
return unsolicited mail. They cannot obligate you in any way. If
they say to return and say NO instead of send in a YES, and they continue to
send you material, you can keep or discard whatever they send you. It
all depends on whether there is some small print on something you signed with
AMA saying that you would accept or like to receive offers from them.

AMA needs to know that this is not a good policy
and that they should send out a card first, before they send out a DVD.
Of course, a DVD is cheap -- ask AOL -- and in the long run it might be
cheaper than sending two mailings. They should consider it a free sample
and not require return. They should include a YES card and not a
NO card. They should only send out the other volumes if they receive an
  order request.

I watched it and I am sending it back.
The content was ok but I don't like someone sending me something I did not
order. Now on the subject of safety that might be a question. I
have not flown much power stuff but Irecall when I was taught I was
told to use a chicken stick or wear a leather glove when propping a
plane. All I saw was bare hands starting planes ??? is that a good
thing to show on a AMA video.

Re: [RCSE] Digital photography

2005-02-24 Thread Erich Merkel
Something that escapes most people is that the sensors in 8 MP non-SLR
digitals are physically smaller than the sensors in 8 MP SLR's, so although
the resolution of the two sensors will be equivalent, because of the smaller
pixels the images produced by the smaller sized sensors will exhibit more
noise... especially at higher ISO settings. So while images taken at ISO
800 or even 1600 on my Canon 20D are acceptable, those taken on the Nikon
8700 (or any other small sensor digicam) will likely exhibit enough noise to
render them unusable. If you have no need to take available light images in
low light conditions then it probably doesn't matter...

Re: close encounters of the aircraft kind: was Re: [RCSE] High Altitude Glider

2005-01-18 Thread Erich Merkel
Used to fly at the Bellingham slope all the time... Great slope!! (But not
much of a landing) And no real danger in that if the wind was on the
slope, full scale traffic was taking off (into the wind) from the runway
behind you, and always at a much higher altitude than the slope lift allowed
you to reach. The only time traffic landed from the direction of the slope
was when the wind was from the other direction, and hence, usually,
unflyable for us. And in any event, as you said, you could see them coming
for miles...

Re: [RCSE] Astro- 110-D digital charger

2005-01-03 Thread Erich Merkel

Someone should jump on this for foam
cutting... The Astro 110D can be put into "test" mode (by holding down the
start button, and then turning on the power), if you then push the start button
one more time the charger becomes a variable Amperage power supply. Which
is really handy, since once you find out what amperage you like to cut what foam
at, you can replicate that exactly regardless (pretty much) of length of cutting
wire used. It also provides a very stable energy source, and therefore
keeps the wire a consistent temperature.

Re: [RCSE] Carbon Fuses and Antenna, important stuff

2003-08-01 Thread Erich Merkel

Hi Gordy,

On my Pike Superior, I simply doubled the length of
the antenna (to 2 meters, 1/2 wave instead of 1/4 wave as discussed on the Samba
site), and let the excess (about 2 feet) hang out the rear of the fuse (what's
inside the fuse is in a tube to prevent abrasion and possible shorting on any
carbon slivers). With this configuration (I'm using the JR R-700
receiver), I'm getting in excess of 200 feet on my range check.
YMMV. How do you like the Pike otherwise? Pretty sweet flyer,
yes?

Re: [RCSE] adjustable tow hook

2003-03-27 Thread Erich Merkel
Hi Dave,.
Use a piece of 1/2 square aluminum stock about 1 1/4 long, drill an 1/8
(or slightly larger) hole longitudinally through it about 1/8 from one
edge, bend a piece of 1/8 steel rod into a U shape with an inside radius
of say about 1/2 (the exact radius will become apparent once you see where
this is going), cut the 1/8 rod so that it has one arm about 1 1/2
long, and the other about 5/8 to 3/4 long. The longer arm goes into the
1/8 hole in the aluminum block and the shorter arm is your adjustable
towhook. All you need is to provide for 1 or 2 set screws to hold the rod
in place, which can be on the top or the bottom of the block; if on the
bottom then the set screws are accessible from the outside. Just epoxy the
block into your fuse so that the hook protrudes from a slot accommodating
the range of adjustment wanted either side of the CG. Voila! hook can't
rotate...

Re: [RCSE] flaps on a flying wing???

2003-03-05 Thread Erich Merkel
One of our local guys flys an eight foot Mongo (a really big Zagi) that he
has put flaps on, and it works very well. He can actually hover the thing
at the edge of the hill, and it comes in very slowly to land.

|
| The full scale ME 163 had flaps, but they were only used as a trim tab.
| Models of ME 163's have successfully used these for functional flaps to
| shorten the landing approach.
|
| This is the short answer to a loaded question!
| The 163 and other SWEPT wings are easier to put flaps on.
| If the wing has enough sweep, the flaps can be located at the CG and they
| won't cause any pitching because there is as much flap in front of the CG
| as there is behind the CG. (in a perfect world)
| If they are behind the CG (like the 163) they can still be easily
| compensated
| because the larger elevons are farther behind and have more leverage.
| On a plank wing like the JW, Zipper, Moth etc. the flaps would be elevator
| input
| and would have to be countered with up elevator compensation.
| This would have to happen evenly and instantly or the plane would do an
| outside
| loop or dive into the ground. I think it would be very difficult to
adjust.
| I did this on one of my 8ft. deltas, there were inboard and outboard
elevons
| of equal length. I set them up so they could crow for landing just to
see
| if it would be useful. It wasn't, the delta can make a very steep approach
| in a nose high, stalled configuration and the flap/crow mix had very
little
| effect compared to this.

[RCSE] Ferrite Chokes for long servo leads?

2000-06-14 Thread Erich Merkel

Setting up a plane with long servo leads, want to use ferrite beads on
leads. What end of the lead (servo or receiver) do I use the the chokes on?
Thanks,
