I would be guessing, but even though a low battery condition exists on

was
low enough to start to lose memory.

2002-01-03 Thread jim larkin

John--put the .022 on the bottom with CA, then wrap the length with kevlar
thread. Warp closely at the root and widen the wraps toward the poly break
to maybe 1/4 inch apart. Then CA the thread in place. Makes for a strong
spar. A ridge on the wing top is NOT good. Glad you have started the Q.

 Hello All!

I got to vacuum bag (balsa sheeted) wings over the
holidays and the 7035 HLG wings came out great! Far,
far better than my first 3M77 balsa sheeted wings!

The other project I am working on is a Quasoar. I
glued in all the wood spars and such, but wanted to
add more strength so I ordered some 1 carbon
laminates to supplement the wood spars. I ordered
(based on articles I have read on the web and in RCSE
archives) two thicknesses of .022 and .044. However,
the .044 is pretty thick! If I were to bag the basla
sheeting over them, I would have a raised ridge on the
wing. So I am considering two choices - use my new
dremel as a router to rout a 1 wide, .044 groove on
the bottom over the current spar, or just use the
0.022 on the bottom by itself without any routing.
The latter is basically the fast lazy way. What I ask
myself is, why is it necessary to go further than just
the one .022 addition when the supplied wood spars
probably served just fine for many previous Quasoar
builders? Is putting the laminate on the bottom the
correct placement, or should it be on top if that was
the only spar supplement I were to add?

 Thanks,

 John Gossett

 Pat,
 We have looked, very hard.!!
F3B and Scale would be the most Likely to go, as the numbers justify it.
I did canvas the Left coast, with the idea of a 2-day rotating F3B / F3J
event, as well as maybe reducing 2-m to 1 day and possibly shifting H/L.
The Best I could get out of the west was maybe 5 guys for F3B only or
 maybe F3J.
I am not willing to piss off 40 + F3J guys to give maybe 10 east coast
and maybe 5 west coast guys 2 days of F3B.
Its a numbers game, as you can imagine.
I caught Flack from a number of sources about the 2-M move as well.
I would Love to cater to the well attended events, however again, the
squeakier wheels seem to get the grease.
I have attended contests North to south, east to west as MY broken wallet
can account for, trying to garner support for the Nats and the LSF.
I keep banging my head on the Regional issue. the Travel issue, and the
One Day event issue, and when I asked for what kind of support I could
expect, If I did make a change, I got SQUAT !!
Every Discipline wants 2 or 3 days at the Nats, We simply do not have the
time nor the manpower that will commit to the work.
Ergo, Despite all the moaning, and such, I am not inclined to change any
thing. Too Late for this year anyway.
You Can ask around, there are people who know that I have been on this
mission for better than 2 years.
We will deal with what we have and enjoy itfor Now...
The way to change things is not to piss and moan, wish in one hand and
dump
in the other, but to ATTEND and voice your concerns with earnest and
support, ... Not to sit behind a screen, and crank out e-mails, and I am
not referring to you, but the others of the masses who feel compelled to
rip and tear with discrimination, and offer no viable solutions.
Earlier today, someone offered up the suggestion that local LSF groups out
west could support a Nationals, In the last elections, we got a total of
5
votes from west of the Mississippi, and all year long we got probably 10
 complaints about the vouchers
 The numbers are not there..
Thanks for your support in the past and the future...I am off my box...for
 now..
 Jack

 Breck and many others,
Your complaint and /or observation about the one day events, like HL,
F3J,
F3B, Scale and X/C has been noted.
Many times, as a matter of fact.
I wish there was something we could do, the issues are Time, VOLUNTEER
Labor, site availability, and the weather.
I and many others put in 10 LONG days working the NATS.
When the final Saturday came this last year, for many of usit was a
fun
 fly day.
Single day events, are one of the reasons that we do not see too many
 people from the Left Coast.
Personally, I am sorry that they can / will not come. There are some
really
kool people to fly with, out there.
I travel, I fly, I attempt to compete, and most of all I have a good
time
 with good people..
For me, thats what its about..

Re: [RCSE] one of those days

2001-09-16 Thread jim larkin

Jim-- Us guys in Birmingham had the same kind of a day. First time in a
long time that 8 of us came out to fly. Beautiful day, no boomers, but we
all had good flites, no crashes, no trouble, just good fun and comraderie.

Just had one of those days, you know, one of those days of flying with
your
buddies and you smile all the way home. I don't think I smiled once last
 week, but today we did.

Unbelievable air, everything was up but velvety smooth. I felt like the
trusty 57oz. dorker lite today, one of my favorite models to fly. My
first
flight of the day and since the F3J team selections gains me my 1 hour
thermal for LSF level IV, and it was a really nice flight. I got to sit
at
the picnic tables with the guys chatting while we all skied out BIG
time. That really helps time pass. George came down first after bagging
his level II 15 minute flight at over 30 something. TK got bored, landed
his Eraser and touched the ice cold molded wings against my arm, the model
was chilled from being flown so high. David McCarthy landed and did the
same, these planes were frigid, although it was about 70 out. At about
that time I was too high, I just dethermalized and pulled the throttle
stick to my gut, and watched the dorker go up for another couple of
minutes
until I tracked out a ways and got it down so I could see the stabs
again. I had to work a little through a down cycle and then hooked up and
skied out again. Down at 1:02:02 and time for some subs for lunch. One
 step closer to level IV.

The rest of the day was much of the same, guys worked on LSF tasks and
lots
of ink was flowing on the blue sheets. I think Robin came close as you
can to completing most of level 1 in one day. What LSF level are you
 again, Mr. Wingstedt? 8-)

Oh yea, another thing I haven't done all season, a first down contest,
with
young gofast McCarthy from altitude. My dorker vs. his hera. As soon as
I
asked if he wanted to go, before the last word was spoken from my mouth,
he
was already in a vertical dive. However, I was down and landed
first... 8-) I wonder if he will tell his Dad about the sound his Hera
made on the way down... heh heh heh! I forgot how much first down
 contests were!

Man was it good to get out and fly with friends today, I hope many of you
guys got to do the same this weekend.

Why is it that a preponderance of American RC pilots with military

Congratulations to Nick Shaw for provisionally breaking the World Duration
record for F3 gliders, at Ivinghoe Beacon here in England. The record
claim
of 36 hours 3 minutes and 19 seconds is subject to ratification by CIAM.
The
current record of 33h 32mn 30s was set 18 years ago by A. Smolentsev
(USSR).

The flight went through a very sticky patch in during the night with low
cloud, mist, rain and gusty winds. I was lucky enough to attend for
several
hours, here's a report and pictures:

 I recently bought a pre-sheeted Anthem (hi Jerry)from someone I meet off
of
RCSE. The wings are wonderful, but the only problem is that whoever
sheeted
the wings did not cut and sand the angle into the root core where it meets
 the fuse.
What would be the best way to get this angle cut or sanded into the root
of
 the core.

 Thanks

Yesterday I got a chance to go over to the local used book store. They
had
a bunch of old issues of RCM (a few other mags too, but RCM was all I got
a
chance to really look at). I took the time to dig through the mess and
 found some really neat stuff.

 Among the things I found:
Construction article for the 'Windfreak' flying wing.
Product review of the 'new' Hobie hawk (April 1974!)
Construction article for the Gryphon flying wing
A picture of a much younger Joe Wurts (1981)
Construction article for the Esprit, the American built up one.
Proof that one of our local club hot shots (Dale Nutter) has been kicking
butt in contests since long before I was born.
New found appreciation for modern radio systems. I found several articles
from 1965 saying that reliable R/C equipment could be right around the
corner. They even had articles on do it yourself TX, RX, and
 servos. A 4 channel transmitter in 1971 cost $199.00.
A featherweight IC servo, only 1.75 oz! for 4lbs of thrust.
Park flyers have been around a long, long time, but they were1/4A powered.
Women on the cover of RCM way back when were much more suggestive

I paid $1 per issue, well worth the enjoyment of browsing though them. So
on a cold rainy day might be worth a trip down to the local used book
store
to dig up some old memories. I bet it will convince you the good old days
were maybe not so great after all :).
