[RCSE] HLG Cost...Sport? or Hobby?

2002-06-07 Thread Mike Kovacs

I love this hobby...aviation is my passion.

I believe you must determine for yourself whether you
are in DLG for the sport or the hobby.

I fly the Avenger 2 DLG from Jancomodels at
http://www.jancomodels.com The Avenger is a Sport DLG
for the new DLGer. It flies great, launches great,
and is comparitively cheap. It doesn't use the AG
airfoils, but uses airfoils that were tested against
actual built wings, not on some computer.

Last year I was flying a Kummero Evo and launching
javelin. I am a new DLGer.

Some are telling me that I will find out at the
Mid-South how the Avenger stands against the Taboos
and XP3's. Actually, I think they will find out how
they stand against the Avenger. By the way, isn't the
TabooXL and XP3 the same plane?

I have done my own experiments with my Avenger on
launch height and dead air times. Results:
Impressive for a sport DLG.

The hobby of DLG's is to launch without killing the
body and find some lift for fun and satisfaction. The
sport of DLG's is to squeek out as many seconds as
possible.

What do you want to pay for? Maximum fun and
satisfaction for your buck or as many seconds for your
buck?

[RCSE] Steps to the Discus Launch

2002-05-15 Thread Mike Kovacs

Fellow DLG Hobbyists,

I have gotten some requests about how I launch. I am
a regional pilot that has had some regional contest
success, but I am mostly a sport flyer that likes to
fly.

For my fellow hobbyists that are learning the launch
of DLG's, I made a small webpage about MY main steps
to the launch. I hope it helps those that are open to
suggestions from fellow pilots.

Check it out at http://home.houston.rr.com/kovacs/
then go to Hand Launch Gliders link then click on the
link about launching under Articles/Information.

[RCSE] Sport and Beginner DLG?

2002-02-12 Thread Mike Kovacs

I like to fly hand launch as a hobby. I also fly
HLG/DLG in contests, but just the art of HLG/DLG
appeals to me. However, the DLG's out there are vey
expensive, especially when I see most planes lasting
days. At costs of $200+, sometimes $300+, I can only
give reasons why my friends are not joining into this
art.

What DLG's are out there that are under $200, yet
still made with modern vacuum bagged wings, but don't
require gyros or computer radios?

Thanks

[RCSE] Same Question, again....will Speed-400 on 8-cell 600mah power a Gentle Lady?

2000-06-01 Thread Mike Kovacs

Question is in the subject, but...

I am thinking of converting my Gentle Lady into an
e-plane. I would like to keep it relatively cheap and
easy. I have Speed-400 experience with my Zagi-400.

Will the Speed-400 be ok for the GL or should I think
about 480 or 550?

Thanks!

P.S.-I am physics teacher...school is out! 2 months
of flying begins! Wuzzup!?

[RCSE] Soaring in South Texas.....news and info!

2000-05-30 Thread Mike Kovacs

1. Over the Memorial Day weekend I flew the slope
sites in Corpus Christi. They are great! Both the
Macaw and Zagi-400 wings had a great time on the
bluffs flying with the seagulls. If you are in the
Corpus Christi area, then check out the slopes. The
directions to the slopes can be found in the slope
site directory at http://www.geocities.com/j_m_kovacs

2. Also over the Memorial Day Weekend, the Houston
Hawks Soaring Club AMA #1698 got together. Few pilots
showed up because of the holiday, but it was chance
for us to talk about what needs to be done for club.
The Houston Hawks webpage is coming along at
http://www.geocities.com/j_m_kovacs/hawks We are
hoping that the club will grow and then we can have a
triangle of contests with the Dallas and San Antonio
clubs.

3. There were over 10 submissions to the slope site
directory. I hope that more are coming!

[RCSE] Slope Sites Needed...Where to fly?

2000-05-18 Thread Mike Kovacs

Submit your favorite slope site at the slope site
directory at http://www.geocities.com/j_m_kovacs

There is now a direct link to the directory.

Submit your slope site from anywhere in the world or
submit a URL that contains a list of local slope sites
in your area.

Help traveling pilots find great places to fly, so we
can keep this great hobby flourishing!

Submission takes about 1 minute!

In the latest QFI magazine (UK) there is a great
article with Dave Sanders and sloping in Cape Cod.
The list of sites in the article are linked in the
directory!

Help make the directory a resource that we all can
use!

Thanks!

[RCSE] New to electrics with Zagi-400

2000-05-17 Thread Mike Kovacs

Ok. Everything works in my Zagi-400, but I am wanting
to learn the specifics of the battery.

I charged it last night at my meter said that it had
11.02 volts across it. I ran it at about half
throttle. The motor died after about 3 minutes.

Does that sound about right? I charged it with a slow
charger (50 ma) for about 8 hours.

What should be about the max voltage after a good
charger?

I am in the dark about this electric stuff, so any
input would be beneficial!

[RCSE] Covering Zagi-400 with Ultracote...?

2000-05-01 Thread Mike Kovacs

My brother has a DAW TG-3 which he covered with
Ultracote.

I have some foam models that I covered with tape.

I have ordered a Zagi-400.

Can I cover it with Ultracote AFTER the strapping tape
is applied? I know that I have to give it a coat of 3M77.

2000-04-27 Thread Mike Kovacs

Dick,

Do you do any type of lay away? I would like to get

would like to give you my business, but am worried
that I won't be able to get it at that price
elsewhere. I would like to put some money down to
hold it until I can pay the rest. I will be able to
pay in full in 2-4 weeks?

Yes, no, definite maybe?

Thanks

[RCSE] Here is the most restrictive question on RCSE (need recommendations!)

2000-04-26 Thread Mike Kovacs

I will be taking quite a few trips this summer and I
want a plane that is the best plane for slope,
thermal, and powered flight.

I would like recommendations for the best plane for
these three types of flight. I have the opportunity
to by a new Zagi-400 complete kit for $100.

I would like a plane that slopes, thermals (least of
the requirements), and flies under power. The
complete kit must cost $125 or less...that must
include plane, engine, battery, ESC, etc...It also
must be a small plane that can fit into a trunk or
back seat easily for 3 people or 2 people and 2 dogs
will be along on the trips.

I think that the Zagi-400 complete kit is my best bet
so far, but looking for thoughts...

Thanks.

P.S. - spec'd out my Gentle Lady today at 5:00pm!

[RCSE] Questions about Flying Wing Flight Characteristics....

2000-04-20 Thread Mike Kovacs

Well...my own flying wing, the KISS Wing, is flying.
But, I have some questions.

1. Do wings have the tendency to spiral into the
ground when in a steep downwind turn?

2. Do wings TE lift a great deal when travelling
downwind?

3. What is the best method to locate the best CG?

4. Do wings need to fly comparitively fast?

[RCSE] U.S. Slope Site Directory...Post your slope! (read first)

2000-04-07 Thread Mike Kovacs

If you are posting a slope, make sure that you give
all asked information except for the slope's name. I
need the state its in, the city or nearest city, type
of slope, wind direction, and directions to the slope
from major highway or road.

A few of the posts have been saying that its not in a
city so they don't give the nearest city. However,
they do give the interstate, which is great!
But...interstates run through the state, so please
give the nearest city, so it is easier to find the
slope for those traveling flyers.

The directory is for those flyers who are going
somewhere and want to see if there is a slope close to
where they are going.

Thanks

[RCSE] Sport Flyer would like thoughts of DAW S1-26 HLG...

2000-02-22 Thread Mike Kovacs

My wife has seen how much I like the foamies on the
slope. She has found a foamie HLG called the Daves
Aircraft Works S1-26 HLG. I told her that I would
find out if it is a fun foamie. I am only a sport
flyer flying for fun and enjoyment, no competition in
the future for me. I am just a flyer not a
competitor. I know this for when I fly fish I get
enjoyment just out of the cast not the catch.

Can some of you give me some thoughts about the DAW
S1-26 HLG?

Thanks. Out.
