[RCSE] Typical Radio Range
Hey gang, I was curious if any of you guys out there have done any extensive range tests with your radios. I e-mail Futaba and they make no claims and simply say it will be in range as long as you can see your airplane. I wanted to know how far it could reach with a remote video system onboard to fly out of sight? Anyone know or have experience here? Re: [RCSE] night flying, was on-board smoke
A friend of mine had some glow in the dark powder that he mixed into epoxy. I had trouble detecting any light output. Though that could be because we have no idea how old it was or even how much light it normally put out. [RCSE] Used Winches?
Hello All, Both my Hi-starts broke down a while back. I know have a great excuse to build an electric launch winch. Just wanted to check to see if any of you happen to have an old (or new) winch you don't need any more and would like to sell me? Or if you know a good source for an inexpensive winch? Re: [RCSE] epp p51 from DAW
If your in the Olympia, Washington area you should go check out the Olympic Flight Museum and see their P-51. It's got a beautiful polished metal top and blue underbelly that is very unique. See them here: http://www.olywa.net/ofm/ Its a bit small but has great planes in great shape. Re: [RCSE] Plug Question
I redid a fuse plug a while back. I was very pleases with the result, but it took allot of time. I took my mold, waxed it as best I could. I them mixed a whole bunch of west systems (any high quality epoxy will do) epoxy and mixed it with cab-o-sil (fumed silica) to make a good, thick paste. I then smeared the goo in the fuse surface of the mold, keeping the epoxy only on the fuse surface, not the mold flange. This coating was about a quarter to a half inch thick. I did this, coating both halves of the mold with the epoxy goo making a good carvable surface. after both sides had set, I mixed more of the epoxy/silica goo and applied a liberal coating to the mold seem and joined the two mold halves to create a seamless new, one-piece plug. After all the epoxy cured, I filled the hollow space with plaster for structural support. Note: one point of my mould was open enough to do this, so if your mould has no opening, you may have to make one. After this was completely cured, I cracked the plug out of the mold. This was where things when wrong. It turns out the thick epoxy layer generated enough heat in the curing stage that it actually melted the release wax and bounded to the resin of the mold. This resulted in chunks of the first mold to be broken off and stuck to the new plug. I had to chisel and grind away at these chunks until they finally cracked off. The old mold ended up in more than the original two planned pieces. Chips of the mold were missing and the mold was lost forever. Now, looking back, I realize this could have bean avoided had I made a thin (less than a 16th of an inch) gel or surface coat, allowed that to cure, then added the thick pasty coat of epoxy goo. This surface coat would have saved them mold by not melting the wax, and allowing the part to separate. Still, this process can be risky if you value your mold and your time. I would only do this if you don't plan on using your current mold or can make a new one out of the original plug. I would then like to make a mold of the modified part. I do not want to destroy the original plug I have for the mold. Does anyone know of a substance I can put in the mold to make a copy of the plug which I can then make the modifications to. I was thinking of some kind of epoxy concoction but I think it might be hard to deal with. Plaster of Paris is another thought but I'm not sure. I seem to remember a molding prototyping substance which is easily carved and sanded but firm enough to make a mold of. Any thoughts out there? cheers, Mark __ Do You Yahoo!? Re: [RCSE] Kevlar Questions
I use Kevlar for my HLG fuse with great success. I just bought a second batch of cloth and noticed that the old scraps left over are a couple shades darker than the new kevlar. This is, as I've read, because of breakdown somewhere at the molecular level. I've also heard that a layer or two of fiber glass is supposed to prevent this breakdown. I believe I read something on the list months ago, that Kevlar has a problem with ultra violet radiation. Anyone know what happens to the kevlar under these conditions? What about the Maple Leaf, I think that is what the all Kevlar model is called, dose anyone know if they use any type of UV additives to the epoxy or if there is any such product? Re: [RCSE] HLG setup
Stefan, I guess you could have that much down throw, but I don't see the point. On my HLG I have equal throws. I have the travel volume maxed out (or at least close) but to handle the extreme control I use 100% exponential with my computer radio. I get the fine, soft feel of small throws with low stick movement along with the large, quick responses that a hand launch needs for low level flying. Or at least that's how I like it. As for that specific launch mode, it's a must. What I use on my Futaba 8UF is the programmable mixing with the channel 8 adjustment knob into my up elevator. I set it to the trainer switch so that I hold the switch down to give just about 1/16th inch up. I throw my hand launch and let the up trim point the plane up enough to get altitude, then release the switch when it has reached the desired climb angle. Then I level off at the top of the launch to go find some lift. This system has given me at least ten more feet of altitude on a good launch. For a V-tail, you need to Pmix both v-tail servo channels. I hope I didn't confuse you too much. What exactly does that mean ? How is this set up ? Thanks, Stefan. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Airplane Box ???
Mr. Lynch, If you plan to ship you plane, I warn you to not ship it in chloroplast, for it will twist and destroy your ship. What I recommend is that you build a box out of wood. Theres a great article all about sailplane shipping in the latest edition of RCSD. Check it out! Good evening all. Just sent my SWC app today, hope I make it in before the 200 people limit. Wont be able to drive to Phoenix this year, so must come up w/ a box to ship my Mantis in. Unfortunately the tail wont come off of it so I think I must make some sort of custom set up. I thought I saw a few people who made boxes out of chloroplast(sp) or what ever you call it- that plastic stuff that looks like card board. Was wondering what thickness to use and how to assemble it(glue, tape, ) Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Walter RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Elliptical leading edges on foam cores
Mr. Border, When I cut an elliptical LE on my hand launch cores, I simply eyeball and feel the shape with my fingers based on templates and the strait LE of the un sanded panels. It takes a bit of caution and skill, but can be done pretty quick. Especially when compared to carving tons of little cores with all those templates.
