RE: [RCSE] adjustable tow hook
I haven't found it to be a big problem so I haven't developed a solution. Use a lock washer and keep it really tight. You could experiment with various lock washers, split washers or combinations. I've just made checking the towhook part of my pre-flight routine. Occasionally, one will have twisted and I just reposition and tighten. -Scott Marshall SLC, UT, USA RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] KEVLAR CUTTING SHEARS
I tried every pair of scissors in the house, including some of my wife's touch those and die sewing scissors and nothin' would cut the stuff. Then I remembered a tip from Phil Barnes Mike Waters on how to modify a pair of Fiskar scissors to do the job. I found the tip on Luke Waters' Mantis page http://home.att.net/~CASA/Mantis/Mantis_page_Constuction_tips.htm It took about 30 seconds to modify my old scissors and once done, they cut Kevlar, well... like butter - AND they still cut fiberglass too - Bonus! Just wanted to pass along the tip and say thanks to Phil, Mike and Luke! -Scott Marshall IMSF, SLC, UT, USA RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] HL Golf Report
Our club, IMSF, sponsors of Soar Utah 2000, (register now at www.silentflight.org) held its second annual 9-hole HL golf tourney at Stansbury Park Golf Course in Stansbury Utah this morning. The conditions were much improved over last year, when we had to battle 10-15 mph winds on the last few holes. Eight pilots participated this year. And it was obvious that pilots benefited from the calm conditions and increased course knowledge. As a result, scores dropped dramatically. More important than the contest, was the opportunity to have a good time with family and friends. Many pilots brought their wives or girlfriends (one or the other, but not both!:-)) and several youngin's flew or drove carts. Dr. Blake Nielsen brought his "A" game to the course and repeated as "Masters" champion. He managed to better his winning total from last year by a remarkable 9 strokes/throws! He demonstrated superb flying and registered four hole-in-ones, Two of those on par-4's. When asked about his performance he said, " I putted well today." Blakester also took longest flight honors with a glide of about 400 yards. Tom Hoopes took second place honors and also won closest to the hole by putting his plane down 6 inches from the cup. Well played! After the contest, pilots and friends had pastries on the clubhouse deck overlooking the lake and played a game of skins. The object of the game was to knock a wiffle ball off a golf tee without touching the tee. The tee was stuck in the top of a foam noodle about a foot above the ground. Three rounds were flown and only two pilots were successful in knocking the wiffle ball off. Blake's 5 year-old son brought the house down when he knocked the ball off on his first attempt! Dave Taylor was the grown-up champion. Thanks everyone for getting up early to make this event such a blast. A jolly good show by all! A special thanks to all the drivers! Here are the scores (gallery applause): Blake Nielsen - 15 - Encore (this has got to be some sort of record low score!) Tom Hoopes - 19 - Aries (Hoopes design) Mikee Kresser - 20 - Hoopes wing on long CF tailboom Dave Taylor - 29 - Corndogger Scott Marshall - 29 - Encore Spencer Nielsen - 31 - DAW S1-26 (Spencer is only 10 years old and already an excellent pilot!) Steven Reed - DNF Allan McKay - DNF I should have pictures of the event available on a web site near you in a few days. -Scott Marshall Soar Utah 2000 Registrar Sept. 2-4 SLC, UT www.silentflyer.org RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. Re: [RCSE] Point of the Mountian, UT
Hi Doug RCSE, The Point is open to anyone, anytime - we don't discriminate! In fact, I've had several ask if they can fly non-scale/PSS planes at SOAR UTAH 2000. The answer is yes! You won't be flying at the same time as the 6 meter planes, for obvious reasons, but there will lots of flying for all types of planes. Lots of flying/learning/sharing/buying/selling/BSing and a good time will be had by all. Our club, IMSF, has a HL Golf tourney tomorrow, but I'll post your note to our club list server in case some of our members are going to the Point. If you want to meet up with the locals, just drop me a line of how they can get in contact with you. Go to http://www.silentflyer.net/mappotm.jpg to see a map of how to get to the POTM. It is really easy. Take I-15 (the main fwy through Utah) to the Salt Lake/Utah County line, get off the freeway and onto the frontage road and follow the signs to the flight park(s). Keep in mind there are two main sites. One on the South - typically best in the a.m and another on the North - They are connected by a 1 mile dirt road. Scott Marshall Soar Utah 2000 Registrar Sept. 2-4, 2000 www.silentflyer.net P.S. Got an email from the para/hangliding on 8/1/00 that indicated the airspace around the point - and the whole Wasatch range - was restricted while they were dropping flame retardant in the area. Never seen that before. Sheriff came up and brought the hang/paragliders down - not sure about R/C, maybe someone with first-hand knowledge could chime in. Anyone can call the briefer at 800-WXBRIEF and get a rundown on the closed airspace in the area. - Original Message - From: Doug Turner [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, August 04, 2000 1:26 AM Subject: [RCSE] Point of the Mountian, UT Can anyone fly any day of the week at the Point of the Mountain? Re: [RCSE] What kind of tape to use
My experience with lacquer paints is that they look nice, but aren't very durable. One simple solution that a lot of pilots use is to pre-tape the joints. That is, after the paint has cured, apply a layer of tape (I use clear, I bought from PWT at Visalia) on each side of the joint (you can put full width on each side, but most do slightly more than half and then trim along the joint with a razor blade). Once at the field, you slide the joint together and tape over top of the pre-tape. Once finished flying for the day, carefully peel off the top layer of tape. You shouldn't need to replace the pre-tape very often, if at all. Of course, after a year or two you will probably feel differently about your pristine paint job (new car syndrome) anyways. If you think the type, or brand, of tape might make a difference, you could paint up a scrap piece of similar material and experiment with various tapes to see if they lift off before making a selection. Your mileage may vary. Get your registrations in for SOAR UTAH 2000. It's only a month away! We've got guys and cool planes coming from all over the USA, including Hawaii. As well as members of the EMS team from Germany. And if you want to see high tech flying machines - Martin Tyner, master falconer and one of only six people in the US authorized to train and hunt with eagles will be there with some of his "friends". For more info check out the IMSF web site or drop me an email. Thanks!!! Re: [RCSE] What servo to use in a DAW 1-26 hlg?
Hi Cliff, I put two HS80's in my 9 year old son's S1-26, but he soon stripped a servo. Thought it was a fluke. Replaced the gears and he stripped one again. Added servo savers. Thought this would fix the problem. He flew two weekends before stripping a servo. Swapped out the servos for two HS80-MG's, kept the servo savers on and he hasn't stripped a servo since (all summer). The DAW S1-26 along with the Hitech IIs radio has been a lightweight, but durable combination, It is also inexpensive enough that Dad doesn't have to worry about it. We put a hook on it and launch it with a hi-start; it thermals pretty well. We have also thermaled it from a hand toss although takes a pretty well developed thermal which is unusual at our high altitude. The plane excels on the slope and is great light wind plane that I like to use to test the wind or to fly at small slopes and mountian sights with tight, rocky landing areas. Your on the right track. -Scott 1999 IMSF President SLC, UT -Original Message- From: Cliff Schwinger [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [RCSE] [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Tuesday, August 31, 1999 7:25 PM Subject: [RCSE] What servo to use in a DAW 1-26 hlg? Also, what is the deal with the new HS-81's? I read on this forum about a month ago about people having problems with them? Has anyone spoken to Hitech about this? What are they saying?
