[RCSE] Coroplast source

2006-03-29 Thread S Meyer
Was wondering where is the best source for coroplast or corrugated
plastic sheets?

Chicago area... Lowes, Home Depot, or Menards?

Have too many planes, need to build some storage boxes.

TIA

Try the local sign shops and their suppliers. That stuff is often used
for signs and I have gotten 4 by 8 sheets from a sign supply store out
here in SOCAL before.

I'm not in the same area, but would be interested in any off the wall
ideas you get. I've found it at sign stores in Texas before, but you
have to find the right sign store because many aren't willing to sell
out their raw material. 4x8 sheets of the 4mm? thick stuff (political
signs) typically ran between $15 and $40, with the actual cost being
less than that. If you have a TAP Plastics local they might be able to
source it.
The new hurricane shutter material that's being used for Habitat For
Humanity houses down here in FL is a really thick (5/8 inch?) corrugated
plastic material that's lightweight, not wood, and easy to store for
long periods. This would be a bit overkill for anything but an airline
box (and arguably underkill for a serious shutter), but still useful.

I used a 4' x 8' sheet of 4mm stuff for that box. I procured the
coroplast from a FastSigns franch for $40, though there is a coro
supplier here in town that sells the stuff for $20 (I needed it right
away). The first place I tried to buy a sheet from wanted $90 for a
sheet! That's the per-sq-foot rate!

I used gaffer's tape for the corners and hinges and so far the box has
lasted 2 years. It's also large enough to fit my Mantis and a Citation
(Super-V-esque) when I take the DLG foam fittings out of it.

2006-03-29 Thread junk1
If you are near a large city with plastics suppliers, the coroplast should
be about $9.00 to $14.00 per sheet for the thin or standard and
around $15.00 to $20.00 for the thick stuff.
It is usually only available from wholesale suppliers, so make up a biz.
name and tell them to go ahead and tax it. Most wholesalers will do
this for someone who doesn't plan on using enough product to set
up an account.

I purchased the sheets I used to make the 2 boxes I have from a sign making
company in Little Rock AR. They cost me around $8.00 per 4'x8' sheet. They
come in about 8-10 colors that I seen.

Look up `plastics' in the yellow pages and call places. Any larger
city usually has some available locally. Places like Home Depot
generally don't seem to carry it, but the local plastics suppliers do.

The 4mm stuff seems to be what you can buy locally, at least in
Austin, TX. If you want the thinner 2mm stuff (like what you'd use to
make a Mugi slope flyer, but probably not good for storage boxes),
http://www.harborsales.net/ can hook you up for pretty reasonable
prices, and they can get thicker stuff too. (But the thicker stuff is
easier to find locally.)

And of course you could always go out and clean up some sign trash (in
many places, these signs are illegal, so you're just cleaing up litter
and doing people a favor) and use them to build your boxes.

Blasphemy!
