[RCSE] Re: First Sailplane

2006-07-01 Thread Keith Love
My first plane was a House of Balsa 2-Tee. The one thing I wasn't
prepared for was that it actually flew! 20 years ago last month...

Next was a House of Balsa 2x4, so that I could try and keep one flying
while the other plane was being repaired.

Then I moved on to a Dodgson Pivot+, which is still flying today!

2004-12-06 Thread Richard Shagam
My first sailplane was a 2 m polyhedral floater called an EyeSoar.
Of course, by the time it completed its first 'obligatory' hand toss it
looked like one. The nose immediately got shorter by about a
quarter-inch after a newbie zoom and stall (no one to help me). But it
eventually flew great until it met an untimely death in a moving truck.

And my first sailplane was a Zaic Thermic 100. Bananna fuse, wavy
wings, untrimmable, but fun to fly. I'm scratch building another, plan
to r/c it.

2004-11-30 Thread fly1milehi

My very first sailplane was this really awful flying, dihedral only,
model that was just rudder and elevator. I scratch built it when I was
about 13 or 14 and I think it was called a Sawaddee.. I got the plans
FREE in one of the European magazines. It looked much like a Windrifter
so I figured I was safe to build it and get at least a nice
airplane sometimes you really do get what you pay for!!

Fortunately I was building and flying power as well and new that planes
in general could fly better than this one so I trashed it and built an
Aquila!!
the rest is history so to speak

2004-11-29 Thread Daniel Juhlin

First sailplane was a Graupner Dandy, while
stationed in Germany in the 70s. Dave Shadel ( a name some may recall) and
I both learned RC on that bird, and flew it until it wouldn't accept any more
repairs. It was a sight to behold, with great globs of Hobbypoxy and
strips of pantyhose holding it together! Dave, of course, went on to do
great things in soaring competition and later F1 pylon, while I still struggle
to keep from having to break out the epoxy and pantyhose...

A Canyon Schweizer 1-26. Made at Canyon ,TX . Made out of foam and
aluminum tubing, 72 in span. Put a cox .09 engine on it to take it up 1000
ft or so and glide it back down. If you hit a strong thermal, hard to get
it back down. I also flew it on a slope. Kraft 72 4 channel radio.

My next real glider was an Oly 88, still fly it sometimes. Oly kit cost
about $29 and Kraft radio at least $300. Used a high start.First radio
was a Royal Apollo on 27, would not work where I lived,The rudder would keep
time with the music on local FM radio station!

Good ole days
