Jim - Your struggle here is a valiant one, and one that I think many clubs around the nation (perhaps the world) have to contend with. We here in Louisville have successfully negotiated the preservation of our flying site over the years -- though as sprawl increases, we may very well be faced with the opposition you now face. I was particularly encouraged in your case by the mention of the county law clarifying the bond issue defined a regional park as land developed primarily to provide outdoor-recreation opportunities not feasible in urbanized areas. While I am a soccer fan and encourage kids to be involved with the sport, I think the better question here, and the one posed by the county law is this: Are we disadvantaging other non-Soccer groups and thereby infringing on that law? I think that is an excellent leg to stand on, and one that I would assume could be used by a good number of clubs around the country. And to echo Breck's question about a legal defense fund - I'd chip in what I could to help you out! The Seattle Times covered the story in print, and talk radio host Dave Ross spent an entire hour on the issue during his morning show. Re: [RCSE] Latest news on 60 Acres South
Its not just soccer -- around here the problem was turning an open area into (yet another) golf course. You have to be careful taking on soccer head on because it involves so many kids so obviously anything that benefits soccer must benefit the community (right..) and we're such a minority that we don't have the votes or the fiscal clout to make a big noise. Its a little easier with golf courses because its quite obvious what's going on -- its a mechanism to convert public facilities for private use. Folks, I'm the treasurer of SASS. I am not sure how much money we'll need - we're fortunate that one of our very own is the one who filed the case. If you would like to make a donation, please contact me via an offline email and I'll send you contact information. Thank you for your support - I sure hope we're able to save this field! - Dave Brombaugh -Original Message- From: Martin Usher [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 05, 2006 10:48 To: soaring@airage.com Subject: Re: [RCSE] Latest news on 60 Acres South Its not just soccer -- around here the problem was turning an open area into (yet another) golf course.
