Re: [RCSE] "Pretty Mantis" Instructions?

2005-02-28 Thread Jeff Steifel
Truth is that compared to UGLY (the original Mantis) the pretty mantis
is STILL pretty UGLY.
But in relative terms Phil, I guess you can say it is pretty. Beauty is
in the eye of the beholder.
;-)

But they do fly way better than they look.
But I have to agree, we don't want anyone getting the idea that it is a
Pretty airplane. ;-)

Phil,
You've been so helpful to the soaring community so how can I contribute?
How about this new moniker, call it the PMS (Pretty Mantis Sailplane)?
Tongue firmly in cheek!

Thanks Anker!
That's what I had in mind for aligning the tailboom but wasn't sure it that
would do it or not. I know if would be a bear to fix if I had it wrong. :)

Can't wait to fly my Mantis this spring! Probably end up buying a second
one with an Aegea wing from Phil and another Pretty Mantis fuse from
Terry. Already made the Tube Sock covers for the wings and Cross Tail and
will be ready to hit the field once it warms up! (Snowing like the dickens
right now!)

Happy flying,
Jim

I will gladly point you in the direction of some useful information if you
will help me in my quest to kill the name "Pretty Mantis". We can use the
terms "Aegea Mantis" or "Luchenbach fuselage" or most any other name that
comes to mind.

There is a "Mantis Building and Flying" forum on the ESL web site with all
of the information you are requesting;

http://forums.flyesl.com/default.asp?CAT_ID=2
Please notice that there are two pages of topics in that forum. You could
post questions in that forum if you still need more information

I have a Pretty Mantis fuse now and noticed that it only comes with one
sheet of instructions that are pretty general. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how to install the tailboom? What do you use as a
reference to make sure the incidence is correct? Should I just use epoxy
to mount it or use a filler as well?

Re: [RCSE] "Pretty Mantis" Instructions?

2005-02-28 Thread Anker Berg-Sonne
Jim,
I have built a whole bunch of those.
I align it by resting the fuse in the building table on the wing saddle. I
then use scrap balsa pieces to hold the tail boom up so its completely
parallel with the table top. Side to side alignment is done by eye. I use
thickened epoxy to fill up the gap between the boom and the fuse and use a
rotating motion to work the thickened epoxy in. Make sure the tail boom is
as far enough in as the instructions specify. Once the thickened epoxy has
set I put a glass and wrap around the joint and I put a reinforcing piece
of glass and epoxy that goes around the bottom of the fuse and way up the
pod and around the wrapped joint. This is probably an overkill, but I once
has a tail boom yank loose and was only saved by the fact that my skeg was
screwed in through the fuse and the boom. I was wondering why I had to feed
in more and more up elevator trim all day!
