Re: [RCSE] Winter blues and USA F3J fundraising

2008-01-31 Thread Joe Rodriguez
It sucks that AMA does not allow more monies for ALL TEAM USA's to compete
abroad representing our country. As Junior team manager for the 2000 effort in
Greece there was NO AMA SUPPORT for the Juniors at that time and we were
fortunate to raise enough $$ to cover all costs for the junior team and help
the seniors. So I know how tough it is and it is tougher in today's economic
climate.

My idea to help is that ALL USA SOARING CLUBS holding contests increase there
entry fee by $5 from now till JULY. This $5 will go to the F3J TEAM and should
be a substantial amount, but we need to start NOW.

Maybe the AMA will take note as they sit behind there castle walls in Muncie.
maybe just maybe!! the AMA can afford to toss you a few logs for fire wood to

  B !
Well by now most of you guys have your new contest killer plane , and
possibly have the radio installed already. Your probably looking on your
shelves pulling out last years broken stuff and glueing that back together for
back up.
Here in beautiful Chicago , we almost broke an all time temperature change of
the temperature going from 50 degrees to minus 4 this morning.
I thought about going out to practice landings,,, umm, not really.
So, Id like to go to the South West Classic and see your smiling faces but
the upcoming year expenditures, plus pending plane purchases will probably
allow me a spring flying contest being F3J in the Rockies in Denver Memorial
weekend.
The first time Ill see most of you soaring guys will be at the Toledo weak
signals show in Ohio, April 4-5-6. Barry Kennedy has allowed Jeffery Walters
and myself to be in his booth to sell raffle tickets and T shirts for the team.
( Thanks Barry).
I thought making the US Team was hard but this fundraising thing is equal the
challenge. We have 151 days left till leaving for the WC, and the team has a
net need figured around $30,000. Another fundraising problem is our fundraising
effort is cut a whole month shorter because the WC is a month earlier (late
June).
Thus, I have the winter blues thinking about it! I wish I could fly today
to remind me what this soaring thing is all about! I think you know what I
mean! That is why Soaring is so great, You can leave everything behind during
a flight or two. I could only dream about being in Punta Gorda with you guys
last weekend.

So We the Team have to rely heavily on your generous contributions thru the
Team website. I have come to be amazed at the cost of what it takes to send a
team to a place as far as Turkey! usf3jteam.com
If you have already contributed, thanks a million and good luck on the
raffle! And feel free to drop me an email to let me know that you did , or
email with any questions regarding preparing for flying in the WC.

Joe,
AMA doesn't sit behind walls, but they know their bottom line and it is tight
these days. Let's face it, if you play, you know the cost, and that being so,
anything that defraes that cost is a bonus. The Jr's as well as the Sr's will
get lots of support from our community, and that is where it is suppose to come.

Joe, if we knew how much $ AMA does supply to support our W/C teams we would
probably say wow, that much.
That info is probably available from many sources, including the team managers
and members. Anybody wish to make that info available ?

Meanwhile, Joe, I think your suggestion of a $5.00 surcharge for every
sailplane contest for support of our F3J team is a GREAT idea. I will propose
to our club, GDSHS, that we do this and also that we add a smaller surcharge at
our monthly club contests for the same purpose.

I am going to try to spread this idea in our area, starting now.

How does everyone feel about this ?

2008-01-31 Thread Jim Monaco
I can contribute to this thread. The information is not secret, it is a
published document and applies to ALL AMA supported FAI teams and there are
quite a few of them, not just F3B/J AND we constitute some of the largest
teams. AMA contributes the following to the FAI teams:

- $400 to the team fund - this typically is allocated towards the airfare,
but can be for any team expense
- Entry Fees for all pilots, managers and support staff
- FAI registration fees
- Banquet costs for all team members
- If food is prepared and served on site by the organizers, it is paid for
- Lodging for the contest days and 1 day prior and after
(These expenses are supported as actual expenses up to 900 Swiss Francs
($832 USD) per team member - not counting the $400 for the airfare)

The US F3J team is comprised this year of 7 pilots (including Cody R. the
returning Junior WC) Junior and Senior Managers, and 4 tow people for an
entourage of 13 people. Last cycle the AMA approved funding for the Junior
team manager and 2 separate towers for the junior team, and this cycle they
waived their normal policy and are also funding the returning junior WC (who
competed in the team selections) so you can see that the AMA is INCREASING
their overall support for F3J in particular.

Unfortunately costs are very high for this trip. Airfares are nearly double
what the fares were to Martin last cycle, and since the flying site is quite
some distance from both the airport and the hotels we will have very high
ground transportation costs - we will need 3 large vans for all the people
and equipment.

The total budget for the trip looks like about $45K with AMA supporting
about $15K which is about the same as last cycle, so we have huge hill to
climb. In previous cycles the soaring community has been very generous and
we basically broke even on the last cycle. With the generosity of many
people we can hopefully raise enough funds to make the final accounting
minimally painful to the pilots and team managers (tower costs are fully
reimbursed by the team).

I also appreciate the offer of clubs adding a fee to their contests to
support the F3J team. However, as desperately as we need the funding, I am
not a fan of taxing pilots to support our goals. People need to support
the organizations and groups that they choose to support. I would prefer
that clubs solicit donations at their events to support the team. I am all
for specific fundraising events where pilots attend specifically to support
the team. I will be preparing a brochure that you can print and pass out for
raffle sales, merchandise sale and donations at your events, I hope to have
that done this weekend.

I am very optimistic that our supporters will again come through and help us
send a thoroughly prepared team to Turkey with nothing to worry about except
winning the golds!!!

Thanks to all of our sponsors and supporters again

Good post about team expenses. Much as I dislike the F3X events, I
support our teams and try to make a small donation. (Us retired
fliers don't have Gordys resources) I also think all donations
should be voluntary.Another problem for AMA is the increased
number of teams to be supported and the increased number of team
support people. As I remember, the team we sent to the first F3B
event in 1977 had the three fliers and a manager. How many does it
take now? Maybe Skip can provide a more accurate number for that
first team since he was there.

Just for grins - here is the FAI teams that the AMA supports and the number
of people allowed for each team. They also support the F3J Junior team at
the same level, I am not sure about the junior teams in the other events.
You can see that the funding commitment for all of this is significant from
the AMA perspective...

F1A,B,C - three competitors per class, plus a team manager and possibly an
assistant team manager, maximum 11.
F1D - three competitors plus a team manager, total 4.
F2 - one team manger, plus an assistant team manager, total 20;
F2A - three pilots
F2B - three pilots
F2C - three pilots and three mechanics
F2D - three pilots and three helpers
F3A - three pilots plus a team manger, total 4.
F3B - three pilots, two helpers, plus a team manager, total 6.
F3C - three pilots plus a team manager, total 4.
F3D- three pilots, three caller/mechanics, plus a team manager, total 7.
F4B,C - three pilots each class, plus one team manager, total 7.
If B and C are flown at different locations and times, an additional
teammanager may be funded.
F5B,D - three pilots each class plus a team manager, total 7.
F3J - three pilots, two helpers, plus a team manager, total 6.
Spacemodels - 12 pilots plus one team manager, total 13.
U.S. reigning world champion(s) each category.

When is a tax not a tax. When it is a donation, of course, maybe pushed with a
small amount of gentle persuasion.

To me this would not be a tax but a priviledge to support our F3J soaring team.
