Re: [Soekris] Can't get net4501 to boot from CF
From: Mike I would put a vote in for trying OpenBSD on that box (what I run). Lots of Linux distributions are dropping support for i486 cpus so you have to do some research on that. The last time I tried Freebsd (netboot not image writing) it didn't manage to work correctly and I couldn't get it installed. How were you managing to get USB booting on the 4501 as afaik it doesn't have built in ports? = Mike, I'm currently using NanoBSD booting from a CF card with an image which was kindly supplied by someone. I could not get USB booting to work, as I thought I had originally written. Re: [Soekris] Can't get net4501 to boot from CF
Hello David, What errors are you seeing on the console at boot time? When working with binary images for Soekris boxen on Windows (M0n0wall or flashrd, for example), I've used physdiskwrite almost exclusively and it works fine- http://m0n0.ch/wall/physdiskwrite.php Eric Eric, Thanks! Yes, using that program I can get a bootable image. Now to see if I can get NTP working. Still deciding between FreeBSD and Linux. With FreeBSD 8.2 on another PC I found that it was too old to update, and yet I've heard reports of problems with FreeBSD 10. Just ordered a couple of 8 GB CF cards so that I can have the installer and the working OS on one disk, since I couldn't get the device to boot over USB with a memory stick, or over USB with a CF reader. A lot to learn still! [Soekris] Can't get net4501 to boot from CF
[My first post here - I've looked through the previous 6 months and don't see this as a topic] I have been the fortunate recipient of a net4501, but although I've written a Compact Flash card image it doesn't boot, from the CF card, although the V1.23 BIOS appears to work. I may not spend too long on this but could anyone point me to a known working image? I used m0n0wall net45xx-1.236.img as a test, but eventually I might like to try NTP - just for interest. To write the card I used the Windows program: Win32 Disk Imager http://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/ which has successfully written SD cards for booting Raspberry Pi PCs and I tried both a 128 MB and a 30 MB CF card.
