I appreciated seeing all of the different hardware recommendations and solutions that others have chosen as well as the fact that there were lots of people experiencing problems with Soekris boxes. Had I not known about the problems, I probably wouldn’t have replaced my box until it died suddenly. Since I have recently (2017) retired my 6501-70 before it showed any symptoms, here is what I replaced it with at less than half the cost of a new 6501-70. QOTOM-Q190G4-S01 mini pc J1900 Quad core 4 LAN https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M0AN7GD/ This is based on two articles I read on Ars Technica about making your own router. Numbers don’t lie—it’s time to build your own router https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/01/numbers-dont-lie-its-time-to-build-your-own-router/ The Router rumble: Ars DIY build faces better tests, tougher competition https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/the-router-rumble-ars-diy-build-faces-better-tests-tougher-competition/ Since this is for a home/small business router, I didn’t mind the DIY aspect. I suspect there are a lot of people out there up through Medium sized businesses that wouldn’t mind this approach either. If you do VPN tunnels there is also an i5 model that has AES-NI support and also less than half the cost of a new 6501-70 (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XPGFG2W/). > - The "proven reliability" claim on the Soekris home page is a cruel joke. I’m surprised that it has not landed them in court yet, especially since they are in California and there are no shortage of lawyers willing to bring class action suits. What I think that means is that they are so small that there really are’t any companies using them that have run into any issues and want to waste time on it versus just calling up a replacement vendor and getting something else. It probably isn’t worth the hassle to sue a small company that doesn’t have any money. > - The people still left on this mailing list are apparantly gluttons for > punishment. I’ll be leaving the list soon as I have recently retired my 6501-70 and I can’t imagine ever using it or Soekris again nor recommending them to others. I appreciated all of the folks that have discussed the issues over the years. scott --- Scott Gustafson sc...@garlicsoftware.com http://www.garlicsoftware.com 8C47 666D 90A0 09A5 263A A89D B0CC AC31 B097 C6C5 signature.asc Description: Message signed with OpenPGP using GPGMail ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
Re: [Soekris] Dying net6501 servers
I bought one of these net6501-70 models in 2015 and then started seeing a lot of these reports of dead machines. I use mine primarily as a simple firewall running pfSense and it is still running but I noticed pretty warm (cpu 88 deg. C while idle). After reading so many of these reports and seeing an article on ARS Technica about router speeds ( http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/01/numbers-dont-lie-its-time-to-build-your-own-router/ ) I decided to get a backup ready using the latest article ( http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016/09/the-router-rumble-ars-diy-build-faces-better-tests-tougher-competition/ ) and now have that Qotom model ready to go with pfSense just in case the 6501 dies prematurely. I’ll replace it soon after I figure out the VOIP issue I’m working on, one problem at a time. scott --- Scott Gustafson sc...@garlicsoftware.com +1-916-512-9667 http://www.garlicsoftware.com 8C47 666D 90A0 09A5 263A A89D B0CC AC31 B097 C6C5 signature.asc Description: Message signed with OpenPGP using GPGMail ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

Can anyone on the list share which vendor, model, and OS to which they have switched? I switched from Cisco devices over to Soekris so that I could better control the OS with pfSense/linux and it seems to be working fine. But it is sounding like I'm going to barely get past the warranty period. Also I'd like to know if anyone has swapped out the heat sinks and for which one (mfg. and model no.) and if anyone has put a fan or two in the device. I got the 6501-70 (non-rack mount) specifically for the 'no fan' to use where people sit. scott - --- Scott Gustafson sc...@garlicsoftware.com http://www.garlicsoftware.com 8C47 666D 90A0 09A5 263A A89D B0CC AC31 B097 C6C5 -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- iQIcBAEBAgAGBQJWyxVdAAoJELNZRUdJfvxt1LIP/0VTvfJmasAe6H66GfsiAnzs jm/p9fkWvOeZtzEPlK7poKfBonnGT0N1eusZMR5FrveY8tW6r//kSZWOTMyry6uN mReU4i+qMUVc2cFpCygeU5w4lL1JNgKgQZBetXkhEEZt40xjT+CtJ6trCvN2X+bg 2OCJdEn0wKkydGFUVgmk1ErO0v5iHP6U8YuMYJMEHrLAc82gJ2j4r4x4iQ3cuy1a HtP+8lo39/MHJf/oqVnpF3sUxBVykKTDL5DRMQ7zokcUp60wsUHKQVwwUlBKoYIo 8gRmJLPMncqaVhMFCtsDoMIVb/PC86T9xvIJnV87kA9ppq3F/PUtA1exb2N2Dyd9 zpn4cwS2gUWFX3LfPjJTClNUWbVbXp13ZmoXtaQRMY+K2LN6vs5N6dy4lDOmWQVu +vzeDZwSKwxMZoCbnZaFa6t2fVwNgr/Z83eh8U9DNhPjfvJr2IFkUnCnwbS+YzID qwybhn2BmcyCcXXjv7H4lv2thAz5fqNGzjeTTSzxc+iiRIpVA1uoaStMd1hSDZtZ /PkS2xOQI9tJ6y8vXwbEwnz0LH3KDvrnP5y/vU1+Eopp3s7+p5OaTy5oz2fdIgxU YUI8DehbTvjc61g2BmJtnJj7Q9Szn/9Vu3qCuGyLnoZ6Dg+E6uRU3V6auOluxgEg iTupq+On5W4tI/9gY1eS =rvXR -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

I'm currently evaluating it as a firewall/router/switch (eth0 = wan, eth1-7 = lan). I haven't tested it with a few OpenVPN clients yet but on paper it looks like it should do fine with the load. Install was easy booting off a USB drive net install image. The only trick was making sure the installer stayed in text mode instead of graphical on the console output. This is the boot line I used to make that work: install vga=normal fb=false DEBIAN_FRONTEND=text console=ttyS0,19200n8 scott signature.asc Description: Message signed with OpenPGP using GPGMail ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech
