I appreciated seeing all of the different hardware recommendations and
solutions that others have chosen as well as the fact that there were lots of
people experiencing problems with Soekris boxes. Had I not known about the
problems, I probably wouldn’t have replaced my box until it died suddenly.
Since I have recently (2017) retired my 6501-70 before it showed any symptoms,
here is what I replaced it with at less than half the cost of a new 6501-70.

This is based on two articles I read on Ars Technica about making your own
router.

Since this is for a home/small business router, I didn’t mind the DIY aspect. I
suspect there are a lot of people out there up through Medium sized businesses
that wouldn’t mind this approach either. If you do VPN tunnels there is also an
i5 model that has AES-NI support and also less than half the cost of a new
6501-70 (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B06XPGFG2W/).

I’m surprised that it has not landed them in court yet, especially since they
are in California and there are no shortage of lawyers willing to bring class
action suits. What I think that means is that they are so small that there
really are’t any companies using them that have run into any issues and want to
waste time on it versus just calling up a replacement vendor and getting
something else. It probably isn’t worth the hassle to sue a small company that
doesn’t have any money.

I’ll be leaving the list soon as I have recently retired my 6501-70 and I can’t
imagine ever using it or Soekris again nor recommending them to others. I
appreciated all of the folks that have discussed the issues over the years.
