The Broadcom ADSL chipset on the 170p is the same chipset used on the realtek/adsl combo card. I can't tell if you're trolling me or if these things are really supported by some open crap. It's not trivial since the 170p has something like 2mb flash and 1mb ram. The ATM stuff is all emulated in software by the Linux kernel with the 170p default software but I think the ADSL chip bundle is probably some proprietary blob. ___ Soekris-tech mailing list Soekris-tech@lists.soekris.com http://lists.soekris.com/mailman/listinfo/soekris-tech

A good solution with OpenBSD is to use a regular ADSL Modem/Router in bridge mode and terminate the PPPOE session on your OpenBSD firewall using the pppoe(4) kernel driver. Re: [Soekris] Replace an ADSL modem-router
Hi Alexandre, Alexandre Westfahl writes: I like OpenBSD and I want to replace my ISP modem-router by a soekris. Concerning LAN part, no problem. But, for ADSL/ADSL2+ part, it's more difficult. Indeed. I was looking for a mini-pci card but it seems it doesn't exist! I didn't manage to find one when I was looking either. Given the size of the Viking card, and the general target market, I'm not really surprised that they're not out there. If I want to take a PCI modem card, I must take net5501 which is the only one with PCI slot. The net4801 can also take a standard PCI card, though I can't see any reason to prefer it over the net5501. I found this out of some mailing lists, it seems soekris and openbsd support it but I want to be sure before buying :) http://www.traverse.com.au/productview.php?product_id=115 I have such a card in my old, reliable net4801. It works just fine, though it runs a bit too hot for the completely enclosed case of the Soekris, so I needed to add some ventilation holes to prevent it from overheating. I'm running Linux, so I can't say for certain that OpenBSD will work, but the card presents itself as an RTL-8139 which has been around for a long time now. I'd be deeply surprised if it didn't just work. The Traverse Tech web page you list above indicates that it has *BSD support, so if it doesn't work, you can probably send it back. Has anyone created an ADSL modem router? Does it work fine? It works fine for me: there's almost no load on the Soekris, even when running the card in bridged mode. And the CPU in my net4801 is substantially slower than the one in the net5501. Btw, do you have any experience with viking cards? Is the lifetime good? This is my first such card, but I haven't had any problems with it (once it had sufficient ventilation) over the year that I've had it, and it's been running 24/7 the whole time.
