Ouch. You could just wrap the whole block in '{{{' and '}}}' and not
have to faff with sed every time you copy/paste a large chunk of code.

Re: [Soekris] OS FAQ

2007-10-08 Thread Matteo Basso - Net Stop Snc
A little tip to write some source code on wiki:

If you want post/write on wiki your .config file or your script you use:
  name
  name2

with a ' ' at the beginning of EVERY line.
To post extended file with " " space you waste a lot of time...a little
solution? sed.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sed 's/^/ /' /PATH/OF/YOUR/FILE >> file-for-wiki

now copy your file-for-wiki on wiki:)
Matteo

ps: I write it after modified of gentoo .config file on wiki

I wouldn't mind being a sysop too - I run wiki.amsat.dk, which is also
a Mediawiki thing - but since I like you live in DK-land it might be a
better idea if somebody in a timezone 6-9 hours removed from MEST
could do it. We might then get something that looks like 24 hours
service ;-)

On the other hand - you could probably teach me something on the
Category stuff, which I haven't got the hang of yet.

No, I just moved the wiki ti http://wiki.soekris.info

I've set up a rewriterule so the old link still works, but if anyone's
having issues, drop me a line.

Here's a nice addition to the FAQ: "How can I contribute to it?".

Need a login/registration? Are Soekris list members registered
automatically? (discussion below doesn't make much sense to me).

Re: [Soekris] OS FAQ

2007-10-03 Thread René Luckow
I've now setup a mediawiki with the extension ConfirmAccount and SpamBlacklist.

I've set edit to be restricted to registered users only, so you guys
need to create an account. At this point I will pretty much confirm
all accounts, I can't imagine anyone going through the trouble of
creating an account and then waiting for a confirmation just to spam,
so I think that should just be standard practice?

If any of you guys have any good ideas of stuff to install or changes
just mail me, preferably at my work mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or here
on the list.

If any of you kind souls will ad Bill's excellent stuff to the wiki in
some clever way, I'm not an expert on how it's supposed to be set up.

Once moved to Wiki it will be the starting point for us soekris owners to

Hi,

just to put my brains and fingers where my mouth is, I wrote a
soekris-tech FAQ Draft:

http://stsx.xs4all.nl/soekris.html

It's a quick and dirty setup - feel free to modify it in any way.
I've left out any OS-specific details, just the general introduction.
It's a start. I think it looks pretty "real".

At least I feel I've done my part, for now - I'll leave it up to others
find it a suitable home.

Re: [Soekris] OS FAQ

2007-09-28 Thread Bill Maas
Hi Esteban,

people spend a lot of time answering questions on this list, so why not
collect the answers, so next time the same question arrives, you can
reply with a simple referral. And as you pointed out, a lot of
documentation is being written anyway. The line between boosting a
companies profits for free and simply putting down a few notes about
ones experiences with some OS on some platform (which some people happen
to do for fun) is thin here. Besides, it's not said that people will buy
a Soekris box easier if they know in advance that they can't boot it of
a USB stick, or won't be able to simply plug in a 3.5" HDD. I think the
balance is OK here. I didn't mean to encourage people to start writing
installation guides, just a few facts and hints ("don't forget
about..").

Well, I'm open to any and all ideas, I think I'll try with mediaWiki and see
how that goes, I think there should be a overall soekris page and then
sections for product specific information. But there should also be a OS
section and such but I'll work on it next week, expect me to upload
something some time monday :)

Esteban mail my work mail [EMAIL PROTECTED] and we'll talk :)

Sounds good:)
A structure like this:

some faq for boards -> setup tftp server, compact flash,

You like it?

maybe would be cool to structure the documentation so it keeps
organized, minimizing chaos...i don't know, maybe a structure:

soekris board x - > os x , os y , os z

for each os have each collaborator page/tutorial/howtoo and some
"musts" like dmesg, lspci output, lsmod, etc ?

Pouls point regarding "or they will be filled with spam in no time"
its a clear risk and can be minimized if some fancy structured way can
be put in place?

Hi All

We bought soekris.info for that exact purpose and can make that available
with a Wiki on it. I agree with Poul-Henning that it should be invite only
so if any of you are willing to be wiki admins and/or have some info we can
put on there, please mail me at work:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (As the e-mail addy hints, I work at Cortex Systems :P )

Pretty much anything soekris related would be nice to have.

I haven't looked into what wiki system is the best yet so if you have any
good experiences with one of them, please let me know too.

A couple of inputs, partly with the soekris.com-sysadmin hat on:

In general wikis need some serious looking after or must be writable
by invitation only, or they will be filled with spam in no time.

Next thing is getting the hardware and software set up is non-trivial,
if you think this sounds weird for a hardware-company, then you
overlooked exactly that it is a hardware company. In that context,
you also have to ask yourself if this is really what you want soekris
staff to spend time on.

I think the summary is that yes, it could be done, but it would
happen much faster if somebody else did it and didn't involve soekris.

Many people documented a lot over 10 thousand different sites (with
broken links, old information, etc) , so maybe its just a matter of
giving a framework for documenting (twiki, etc) at Soekris site and
let people just collaborate?

Soekris is a company that makes profit of their products, sounds
amazing to me that people is willing to document/work/spend time for

Hi

I completely agree with you. It's something that would be very
useful. Even if it was just a page of links it would make the process
easier.

Last time I brought this up, the general consensus was *not* in favor
of the idea. It's more or less it's a bandwidth issue. If it's going
to get done somebody is going to have to volunteer to do it. Dumping
it on top of all the stuff that Soren has on his plate does not seem
like a good idea.
